The narrative begins on April Fools' Day aboard the Mississippi steamboat Fidèle, bound for New Orleans. A deaf-mute in cream-colored clothes boards the vessel, bearing a slate inscribed with Pauline verses on charity, only to be jostled and misunderstood by the skeptical crowd. Soon after, a succession of similarly singular characters appears, each engaging the passengers in debates concerning trust, human nature, and morals. Among them are a black cripple playing for pennies, a man in mourning claiming old acquaintanceship with reluctant strangers, and a philosophical beggar promoting a grand world-charity scheme.
As the steamer glides southward through shifting river scenery, various travelers—including a misanthropic bachelor, a credulous merchant, and an ailing miser—fall prey to the shifting disguises and subtle interrogations of the central figure. The encounters probe the delicate boundaries between sincere benevolence and naive gullibility, exposing the deep undercurrents of suspicion that govern human relations. Melville uses these shifting encounters to construct a darkly humorous comedy of errors and beliefs, where every exchange challenges the possibility of genuine confidence among men.
