The narrative begins on an American whaling ship that has spent six months at sea without fresh provisions, weary and worn from the relentless Pacific voyage. Disgusted by the arbitrary cruelty of the captain and the grim prospect of a multi-year cruise, a sailor named Tommo and his companion Toby resolve to desert the vessel upon reaching the Marquesas Islands. They slip away during a shore liberty and plunge into the dense, rain-soaked wilderness of the island of Nukuheva.
After a grueling and perilous trek across steep mountain ridges and deep ravines, the two runaways find themselves descending into an isolated valley. They are uncertain whether they have entered the territory of the friendly Happar tribe or the feared Typees, whose reputation for cannibalism precedes them. They are soon discovered by young natives who lead them into the inhabited heart of the vale, where they are received with surprising hospitality by a powerful chief named Mehevi and the villagers of Marheyo's household.
As the days pass, Tommo's physical condition deteriorates due to a mysterious and worsening malady in his leg, which leaves him lame and in constant pain. Toby attempts to cross the mountains to reach Nukuheva for medical help but is attacked by hostile warriors, eventually disappearing under mysterious circumstances that leave Tommo stranded alone among the tribe. Despite the genuine kindness, gentle demeanor, and constant ministrations of his hosts—particularly the faithful valet Kory-Kory and the lovely native maiden Fayaway—Tommo grows increasingly suspicious of their true intentions.
