The narrative begins at Fort House, a gloomy mansion where George Uhlman is staying to support his nephew, Doctor Lewis Parker, on the eve of his wedding to Dorothy McGregor. The household is perpetually unsettled by phantom disturbances known as a Poltergeist and the persistent calls of quails outside the window. Tensions mount when Lewis quarrels bitterly with the town's prominent physician, Doctor Gaskell, over a patient. Shortly after, Gaskell is found murdered in the bushes, shot dead with a shotgun, and Lewis is immediately arrested for the crime. A local prosecutor seizes the case to advance his own career, turning public opinion against the young doctor and securing an indictment from the grand jury.
Refusing to yield to despair, a brilliant and eccentric best man named Doctor Floyd Somers arrives from the North to conduct his own unorthodox investigation. While Lewis faces the threat of a lynch mob outside the village lockup, Somers thwarts the attackers using a clever bluff with humble vegetables. Digging deeper into the town's underbelly, Somers discovers a massive illicit whisky-smuggling operation orchestrated by mountain bootlegger Ralph Satterfield and led by a notorious fugitive known as Roaring Lafe Rutledge.
Meanwhile, the nurse Anne Christie reveals her hidden past as the stepdaughter of Rutledge, explaining how she fled the mountains to escape a brutal life. The mystery thickens as Somers traces the murder back to Gaskell stumbling upon the bootlegging cache. Determined to clear Lewis completely, Somers and his companions venture deep into the treacherous mountain territory to confront Rutledge directly, facing mortal danger to unmask the true killer before the trial seals an innocent man's fate.
