Oliver Twist is forcibly delivered into the hands of the brutal housebreaker Bill Sikes, who intends to use the small boy for a midnight burglary at a country home in Chertsey. Despite the warnings of Nancy and the terrifying tales of criminals he reads beforehand, Oliver is trapped. During the break-in, he attempts to alarm the family but is shot and wounded by the butler Giles. Sikes abandons the injured boy in a ditch to escape capture.
Miraculously, the residents of the targeted house, particularly the gentle Rose Maylie and her aunt, take the suffering child in, nurse him through a severe fever, and shield him from the authorities with the help of the kind-hearted surgeon Losberne. Meanwhile, in London, the villainous Jew Fagin discovers the failure of the expedition and learns that Oliver has vanished, prompting the mysterious Monks to intensify his secretive pursuit of the boy to bury his origins forever. Oliver begins to experience genuine peace and happiness in the country, finding joy in nature and his studies, though a brief glimpse of Fagin and Monks near the cottage shatters this temporary tranquility.
Simultaneously, back at the workhouse, Mr. Bumble marries the matron Mrs. Corney, only to suffer severe subjugation by his new wife, eventually meeting the sinister Monks in a tavern and selling him the secret of old Sally's dying confession regarding Oliver's birth.
