The narrative begins with David's birth in Suffolk as a posthumous child, cared for by his devoted mother Clara and the faithful servant Peggotty. Their peaceful life is shattered when Clara marries the tyrannical Mr. Murdstone, whose cruel sister Jane soon joins the household. Subjected to emotional abuse and grueling lessons, David is eventually sent away to Salem House, a brutal boarding school run by the harsh Mr.
Creakle. At school, David forms a lasting friendship with the charismatic James Steerforth and finds a mentor in the gentle teacher Mr. Mell.
Tragedy strikes when David's mother and newborn brother die, leaving him entirely orphaned and neglected by his stepparents. He is sent to work in a London warehouse, enduring grim conditions before running away to find his eccentric great-aunt, Betsey Trotwood. Aunt Betsey rescues David from his bleak existence, adopts him, and provides him with a proper education at a reputable school in Canterbury, where he lodges with the kindly lawyer Mr. Wickfield.

He falls deeply in love with and marries the sweet but naive Dora Spenlow, while his childhood sweetheart, little Em'ly, suffers a tragic betrayal by Steerforth.
