When the French forces land and capture Alexandria, Edgar's father flees with his merchandise to safety, leaving Edgar behind under the protection of his Arab friends. This twist of fate plunges Edgar into the heart of the campaign. He witnesses the dramatic Battle of the Pyramids, where the legendary Mameluke cavalry shatters against the disciplined squares and artillery of the French infantry.
