The narrative follows Christian, a burdened man who abandons his doomed home to seek eternal life. Guided by Evangelist, he traverses treacherous landscapes, beginning with the treacherous Slough of Despond where his companion Pliable abandons him. He encounters Mr. Worldly Wiseman, who attempts to divert him to the village of Morality, but is corrected and guided back to the true narrow way. Christian finds lodging at the House of the Interpreter, where he is shown instructive allegories regarding grace, patience, and the perils of despair. Arriving at the Cross, his heavy burden miraculously falls into a tomb, and he receives a marked scroll and a white garment from three Shining Ones.
Continuing his ascent up the Hill Difficulty, Christian falls asleep in a shady arbor and loses his protective scroll, forcing him to retrace his steps in bitter sorrow. He successfully navigates past chained lions to find refuge in the Palace Beautiful, where wise companions instruct him in history and arm him for the battles ahead. In the Valley of Humiliation, he engages in a fierce, half-day combat with the dragon-like monster Apollyon, ultimately defeating him with a two-edged sword. Immediately following, he walks through the terrifying Valley of the Shadow of Death amidst hobgoblins, roaring flames, and whispering demons, emerging safely into the morning light.
Upon exiting the valley, Christian overtakes Faithful, and the two companions journey together toward the bustling Vanity Fair, where worldly vanities are sold. Because their appearance, speech, and disdain for the merchandise disrupt the fair, they are arrested and put on trial before Lord Hate-good. Faithful is martyred through cruel scourging and burning at the stake, passing swiftly in a chariot to the Celestial Gate. Christian escapes prison and is soon joined by a new companion, Hopeful, who was inspired by Faithful's steadfastness.
The pair resist the temptations of the silver mine offered by Demas and narrowly escape imprisonment in Doubting Castle by the brutal Giant Despair after using the key named Promise to unlock the dungeon doors. Reaching the Delectable Mountains, shepherds warn them of local perils and allow them to view the distant gates of the Celestial City through a telescope. They encounter the skeptical Ignorance and survive the traps of the Flatterer before entering the peaceful country of Beulah, where the air is sweet and the city's golden reflection fills them with longing.
Finally, the pilgrims must cross a deep, bridge-less river representing death. Christian sinks into despair and terrifying doubt under the weight of his past sins, but Hopeful encourages him until they both find solid ground. Welcomed by shining hosts and heavenly trumpeters, they ascend the hill and enter the golden gates of the Celestial City, transformed in glory, while the lagging Ignorance is cast away into a backdoor to hell.
