The narrative begins at the Admiral Benbow inn, where a weathered seaman named Billy Bones hides with a terrifying secret and a dread of the one-legged sailor. Following his death and the discovery of a map in his sea-chest, young Jim Hawkins joins Squire Trelawney and Dr. Livesey on a voyage aboard the schooner Hispaniola to unearth Captain Flint's hidden treasure. Unbeknownst to the gentlemen, the crew—led by the charismatic and dangerous ship's cook, Long John Silver—consists largely of murderous pirates waiting for the right moment to mutiny.
Upon reaching the island, Jim escapes into the jungle where he meets Ben Gunn, a marooned sailor who holds the key to the treasure's actual location. Meanwhile, the captain and the loyal men abandon the ship for a fortified stockade, enduring a fierce attack from the mutineers. Through daring acts, including cutting the Hispaniola loose and defeating the coxswain Israel Hands aboard, Jim shifts the balance of power. Ultimately, the pirates turn on Silver as their plans unravel, forcing the cunning cook to forge an uneasy alliance with Jim to survive the final confrontation over the gold.
