The narrative begins on the gray Kansas prairies where a cyclone sweeps a young girl named Dorothy and her dog Toto into the fantastical Land of Oz. Upon arrival, her house accidentally crushes the Wicked Witch of the East, earning her a pair of magical silver shoes and the gratitude of the local Munchkins. Guided by the Witch of the North, Dorothy sets out along the yellow brick road toward the Emerald City to ask the Great Oz for a way back home. Along the journey, she encounters three companions: a Scarecrow who desperately wants brains to replace his straw stuffing, a Tin Woodman who lacks a heart and longs to love, and a Cowardly Lion who suffers from terror despite his fierce exterior and seeks courage.
Together, they face numerous perils, from deadly poppy fields and ferocious beast-like Kalidahs to the malicious machinations of the Wicked Witch of the West. Upon reaching the Emerald City, the great Wizard demands proof of the western witch's demise before granting their wishes. Forced to confront their remaining enemy, Dorothy inadvertently melts the wicked sorceress with water, ending her tyranny.
Returning to the Emerald City, the companions discover that Oz is merely an ordinary man operating elaborate stage illusions. Despite this deception, the wizard cleverly helps the Scarecrow, Tin Woodman, and Lion realize their innate capacities for wisdom, empathy, and bravery through practical encouragement. Finally, the Good Witch of the South reveals the true secret of Dorothy's magical silver shoes: they possess the power to transport the wearer anywhere in an instant, allowing the girl to return safely to her family on the Kansas prairie.
