Dorothy Gale lives on the harsh, gray prairies of Kansas with her aunt and uncle, until a violent cyclone lifts her wooden house into the air and deposits it in the wondrous Land of Oz. Eager to return home, Dorothy learns that the only person powerful enough to help her is the mysterious Wizard residing in the distant Emerald City. Setting out along the yellow brick road, she is soon joined by three companions who each harbor a deeply personal lack: a Scarecrow who believes he is a fool because his head is stuffed with straw, a Tin Woodman who longs for a heart to feel emotion after an enchanted axe dismantled his human body, and a Cowardly Lion who suffers profound shame because his ferocious roars mask a spirit full of terror.
Together, the travelers navigate a series of perils, from deadly poppy fields and dark forests to monstrous beasts like the Kalidahs and a ferocious spider. They outwit these dangers not through sheer might, but by relying on one another's unique, developing strengths. Upon finally reaching the Emerald City, they discover that the Great Wizard is merely a frightened mortal man from Omaha who has maintained his illusion through ventriloquism and theatrical trickery. Refusing to help them until they prove their worth, the humbug Wizard demands they destroy the Wicked Witch of the West.
The group marches into the western territory, where the Wicked Witch deploys wolves, crows, bees, and finally the magical Winged Monkeys to dismantle the party. When the Witch traps Dorothy as a kitchen slave and attempts to steal her magical silver shoes, a desperate moment causes Dorothy to throw a bucket of water over her captor. To her astonishment, the water causes the wicked woman to melt entirely away. Freed from tyranny, the companions return to the Emerald City, where the false wizard admits his limitations but cleverly bestows upon the companions tangible tokens of validation, fulfilling their psychological needs through the placebo of belief.
Still stranded without a direct path to Kansas, Dorothy seeks the guidance of Glinda, the Good Witch of the South. After utilizing the last commands of the golden cap to return her friends safely to their respective kingdoms, Dorothy learns the final truth of her journey. The magical silver shoes on her feet have possessed the power all along to transport her anywhere in the world in three simple steps. Striking her heels together, Dorothy bids farewell to her companions and awakens safely on the Kansas prairie in the arms of Aunt Em.
