The story opens in London, where the ambitious Lady Carbury schemes to advance her son Felix and write for a living. Her son Felix is a dissolute, beautiful young baronet who wastes his fortune on gambling and leads a reckless life, indifferent to his mother's sacrifices. To retrieve his fortunes, Felix sets his sights on Marie Melmotte, the wealthy and naive daughter of the colossal financier Augustus Melmotte. The Melmottes have burst into London society with immense ostentation, securing royal patronage and the company of duchesses through sheer financial force, despite widespread rumors of fraud and his scandalous past in Paris.
Augustus Melmotte launches the great South Central Pacific and Mexican Railway, drawing in a network of gullible investors, needy aristocrats, and desperate speculators like Felix, who becomes a director. Meanwhile, in the quiet countryside, Roger Carbury remains steadfast in his love for Henrietta, Lady Carbury's daughter, while Henrietta's affections are pulled toward the young and unstable Paul Montague. Paul is himself entangled in the dubious American railway enterprise brought over by the flashy promoter Hamilton K.
