Audiobook The Garden Party, and Other Stories

The collection opens with the expansive sea life of At the Bay, where various families vacation near Wellington, observing the rhythms of nature and the quiet tensions of marriage, particularly through the sensitive, withdrawn Linda Burnell and her practical, driven husband Stanley. In The Garden-Party, young Laura Sheridan struggles to reconcile the festive opulence of her family's upper-class garden party with the sudden, sordid death of a working-class carter down the lane, seeking a deeper meaning in mortality that her family dismisses as morbid sentimentality. The Daughters of the Late Colonel follows two timid, middle-aged sisters as they navigate the chaotic aftermath of their tyrannical father's death, finding themselves paralyzed by newfound freedom yet trapped in lifelong habits of submission. Other pieces examine the fragile illusions of social identity and romance, such as in the title story where a young woman named Leila experiences both the intoxicating thrill and the sobering transience of her first grand ball, or in Miss Brill, where an aging lonely woman projects theatrical romance onto the strangers in a French park until a cruel remark shatters her gentle delusions. Throughout these narratives, Mansfield portrays characters caught between social expectations and inner desires, often laying bare the unspoken griefs, small disappointments, and sudden flashes of clarity that define human relationships without ever offering easy resolutions.
