Anthony Cade, a man of adventurous spirit, finds himself entrusted with the memoirs of the late Count Stylptitch, a document coveted by various political factions vying for the throne of Herzoslovakia. Arriving in England, Anthony agrees to deliver the manuscript while simultaneously taking on a mission to return a packet of sensitive letters to a young woman known as Virginia Revel. However, before the manuscript reaches its destination, a murder occurs at Chimneys, the historic country estate hosting the claimants to the Herzoslovakian throne. The victim, initially thought to be a minor count, is revealed to be Prince Michael Obolovitch himself, setting off a frantic investigation led by Superintendent Battle.
As secrets unfold, it becomes clear that the murder is tied to a much older mystery involving the disappearance of a legendary diamond and the shadowy figure known as King Victor. Anthony navigates a maze of impostors, political maneuvering, and hidden clues, realizing that the manuscript and the stolen jewel are closely intertwined.
