Rabbi Jochonan, known as the miser despite his profound wisdom, is summoned by a mysterious stranger to perform a ritual in a city of demons, where he learns the hard lessons of charity and temperance through terrifying and glittering trials of silver, gold, and precious gems. Another central figure is Jussuf, a wealthy merchant whose frantic pursuit of business wears down his health until he encounters a mischievous daughter of the genii in his garden. This sets off a long and arduous quest across strange lands, involving magical wasps and bees, immense growing melons, subterranean treasuries, and fire-worshippers.
Jussuf must navigate enchanted trials, tests of obedience, and bizarre captivities before finding true fulfillment.
