Antonio Pigafetta opens his account by describing how he joined the ambitious 1519 Spanish expedition led by the Portuguese captain Fernando de Magellan, whose goal was to find a western route to the Spice Islands. The fleet of five ships departed Seville in August, battling Atlantic storms and mutiny during a lengthy winter encampment on the desolate Patagonian coast, where the crew encountered giant natives whom they called Patagonians. After enduring immense hardships and the desertion of one vessel, Magellan's remaining ships discovered the hidden strait now bearing his name in October 1520, successfully debouching into the vast, calm waters of the Pacific Ocean.
The subsequent Pacific crossing tested the limits of human endurance as the crew suffered from severe scurvy and extreme starvation, consuming sawdust and ox hides when their rations spoiled entirely. After more than three months at sea without fresh provisions, they made landfall at the Marianas, which they named the Islands of Thieves due to the locals' thievish behavior, before finally reaching the Philippine archipelago in March 1521. Establishing friendly relations with the native rulers of Cebu and Limasaua, the explorers successfully baptized hundreds of islanders, including King Humabon and his queen, while planting crosses to claim the newly discovered territories for the Spanish crown.
Magellan's religious zeal and political maneuvering ultimately proved disastrous when he intervened in a local tribal dispute on the neighboring island of Mactan. On April 27, 1521, the captain was killed during a fierce engagement with the forces of the defiant chief Cilapulapu, leaving the expedition stunned and leaderless. Shortly after this tragedy, the remaining Spaniards were betrayed and massacred during a banquet hosted by their erstwhile Cebuano allies, forcing the diminished fleet to flee under the new command of Juan Carvalho.
The survivors burned one of their unseaworthy vessels near Bohol and continued their arduous voyage through Southeast Asian waters, eventually reaching Brunei on the island of Borneo. Pigafetta records detailed observations of the opulent sultanate's waterborne city, court customs, and extensive trade networks before the expedition departed following mounting suspicions of treachery. Continuing southeastward through treacherous reefs and storms, the two surviving ships finally anchored off the island of Tidore in the Moluccas on November 8, 1521, completing a twenty-seven-month journey to the much-coveted spice islands.
In the Moluccas, the mariners were warmly received by King Sultan Manzor, who eagerly pledged allegiance to the King of Spain and supplied the vessels with abundant quantities of precious cloves. Pigafetta provides rich ethnographic descriptions of the native peoples, indigenous flora and fauna, and local political intrigues throughout the archipelago, preserving invaluable early vocabularies of regional languages. The narrative culminates in the triumphant loading of the spices and preparations for the final harrowing homeward voyage across the Indian Ocean, cementing the text as one of the most vital geographical and historical documents of the Age of Discovery.
