The narrative begins in the stifling opium dens of Shanghai, where Ronald Mirlees, a penniless and cynical Scottish orientalist, intervenes in a brutal attack on a handsome and mysterious Chinaman. This act pulls Mirlees into a web of conspiracy involving a secret Tibetan sect and sets him on a relentless journey upstream. He soon joins forces with the victim, who reveals himself to be Saunders Philipson, a man driven by an obsession to find an uncharted valley beyond the towering Himalayan ranges.
Equipped with a high-powered, state-of-the-art motor launch, the pair fight their way past hostile pursuit down the Whangpu and up the Yangtze rivers, dodging sniper fire and navigating treacherous gorges with reckless daring. Along the way, they recruit Stephen Poyning, a sharp-witted and unflappable Oxford graduate who proves his mettle during desperate armed clashes with their pursuers. The story transitions from a river thriller into a high-altitude mountaineering expedition as the trio, accompanied by loyal native servants, pushes deep into the freezing, desolate plateaus of Tibet.
Battling extreme altitude sickness, sub-zero blizzards, and hostile hillmen, the explorers rely entirely on Philipson’s uncanny endurance and navigational genius.
