The narrative begins in the stifling calm of the tropical Pacific on board the Northumberland, carrying Arthur Lestrange and his two children, Dick and Emmeline, alongside a quirky Celtic sailor named Patrick Button. The tragedy unfolds when the ship catches fire, forcing the children and Paddy into a small dinghy just before the vessel explodes. Adrift on the vast ocean, they are sustained by the old sailor's resourcefulness and folkloric tales until they reach a hidden paradise, an island enclosing a sapphire lagoon guarded by a barrier coral reef. Here, the traditional world vanishes completely.
Paddy establishes a primitive camp, providing food and shelter while guarding the children from the terrors of reality through gentle deception. The passing of years transforms the children into children of nature; Dick grows strong and daring, mastering the sea and the wild woods, while Emmeline develops a quiet, contemplative grace.
