The opening volume introduces the grand narrative framework of the collection, where the disillusioned King Shahriyar executes his unfaithful wives at daybreak until the vizier's clever daughter, Shahrazad, begins weaving an endless tapestry of stories to save her life. The narrative opens with the famous tale of the Merchant and the Jinnee, wherein a merchant inadvertently causes the death of an invisible spirit's son and is granted a year to settle his affairs before facing execution. As he awaits his fate in a lonely garden, three aged men approach and share their own miraculous histories involving enchanted gazelles, black hounds, and mules, convincing the Jinnee to remit his claim to blood. Following this, the narrative unfolds the hypnotic tale of the Fisherman who dredges up a sealed brass bottle containing a furious Márid, only to trick the giant back into his vessel through a demonstration of wits.
The fisherman is rewarded with magical multi-colored fish which he presents to the Sultan, whose cook discovers a mysterious maiden appearing from kitchen walls to converse with the swimming creatures. Intrigued by these portents, the Sultan journeys into the desert to discover a black palace and its tragic master, the Young King of the Black Islands. This sovereign's lower body has been turned to stone by a wicked enchantress wife who secretly visits a battered black slave. The Sultan intervenes by slaying the slave and taking his place, eventually punishing the sorceress and restoring the transformed inhabitants of the city back to their human forms.
