The epic opens with the sage Narada recounting the noble life and virtues of Rama, an exemplary prince of the Ikshvaku dynasty. Prompted by divine necessity to relieve the world of the tyrannical demon Ravana, Lord Vishnu incarnates as Rama, born alongside his brothers Bharat, Lakshmana, and Shatrughna to King Dasaratha of Ayodhya. Guided by the sage Viswamitra, the young Rama performs heroic feats, including the destruction of the demoness Tarakasura and the supernatural conquest of subduing the great bow of Siva in Mithila.
By successfully bending and breaking the sacred bow, Rama wins the hand of Sita, the miraculous daughter of King Janak, in a union celebrated alongside his brothers' marriages. However, political intrigue fomented by Queen Kaikeyi forces Rama into a fourteen-year forest exile to secure the throne for her own son, Bharat. Accompanied by his devoted wife Sita and faithful brother Lakshmana, Rama embraces the ascetic life of the Dandaka forest, encountering sages, hermitages, and fierce rakshasas.
The narrative intensifies when Ravana, king of Lanka, abducts Sita by trickery and force, plunging Rama into profound grief. Setting out in search of his lost wife, Rama forms a strategic alliance with Sugriva and the monkey hosts of Kishkindha, led by the indomitable Hanuman. With the aid of his loyal allies, Rama constructs a monumental bridge across the ocean to Lanka, initiating a cataclysmic war against the demon legions to rescue Sita and restore cosmic order.
