The narrative follows an American traveler who descends into a deep mine and accidentally breaches the subterranean domain of the Vril-ya, an ancient race of human descendants. These beings live in a sunless world illuminated by artificial light and powered by vril, a mysterious and all-powerful energy force that serves both as an instrument of absolute destruction and a means of healing. The protagonist is rescued and hosted by a prominent family, particularly the philosopher Aph-Lin and his exceptionally gifted daughter Zee, who educates him in their language and customs.
Life among the Vril-ya approaches a peaceful utopian ideal where poverty, crime, and war are entirely unknown. Society is organized into small, stable communities that reject competition, ambition, and the political turbulence of surface-dwelling nations. Gender roles are notably inverted; the women, or Gy-ei, are physically larger, stronger, and possess greater mastery over vril, retaining the exclusive right of courtship and choosing their mates. Despite the initial wonder, the traveler gradually grows oppressed by the unrelenting tranquility, the monotony of a culture without art or literature, and the constant underlying threat of annihilation should he provoke the community.
As the narrative develops, the traveler's presence becomes a source of tension. Zee falls deeply in love with him and proposes a spiritual union, offering to help him escape the subterranean world. However, the ruling authorities view him as a potential danger to the collective security of their race. Recognizing that his romantic entanglement and his mere existence threaten him with summary execution, the protagonist realizes he can never truly belong to this advanced species.
With Zee's covert assistance, the traveler is eventually guided back through the sealed chasm to the upper world. He returns to human society with a deep sense of alienation and a lingering dread. The account concludes with a solemn warning that if this superior subterranean race should ever emerge to the surface, they will inevitably supplant and destroy modern humanity.
