The Adventures of Tom Sawyer follows the brilliant, imaginative, and rebellious Tom Sawyer through his youth in the fictional town of St. Petersburg, Missouri, on the banks of the Mississippi River. The central conflict of the story deepens when Tom and the town outcast, Huckleberry Finn, sneak into a graveyard at midnight to cure warts and instead witness a murder. They watch in terror as the half-breed Injun Joe murders young Dr. Robinson and frames the harmless drunkard Muff Potter. Bound by a blood oath, the boys keep silent out of fear for their lives, suffering terrible pangs of conscience as an innocent man faces the gallows.
Simultaneously, Tom pursues his romantic ambitions, first infatuated with Amy Lawrence before falling hopelessly in love with Becky Thatcher, the new judge's daughter. After a misunderstanding causes Becky to reject him, Tom runs away with Joe Harper and Huck Finn to Jackson's Island, living out a pirate fantasy. When the village presumes the boys have drowned, they dramatically return to attend their own funeral sermon, basking in the profound remorse and admiration of the town.
Back in civilization, the guilt over Muff Potter's fate grows too heavy to bear. Tom breaks his oath and testifies in court, exposing Injun Joe as the true murderer. Although Joe escapes through a window, the trial restores Potter's freedom and cements Tom as the ultimate village hero.
The narrative culminates during a school picnic when Tom and Becky become lost in the vast, winding corridors of McDougal's Cave. Facing starvation and total darkness, Tom navigates their escape just as Injun Joe starves to death inside a sealed section of the cave. Shortly after, Tom and Huck discover the hidden outlaw treasure buried beneath the haunted house, making them wealthy and securing Huck's adoption by the kind Widow Douglas, sealing a legendary childhood.
