Audiobook Shakespeare and the Emblem Writers

This study investigates the vast network of emblem books and classical sources that circulated in Europe during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, tracing their impact on English literature. It addresses the problem of how proverbial motifs, emblematic devices, and historical parallels were transmitted through translators, travellers, and Continental writers into the cultural consciousness of Elizabethan England. The author covers the history of emblem-book literature from its early precursors, such as the block-books and the works of Sebastian Brandt, through the classical refinement introduced by Andrea Alciat, to the mature works of Whitney, Paradin, and Otho Vænius. Detailed attention is given to the ways these collections of symbols, mottoes, and pictorial designs were utilized not only in pageantry, tapestry, and domestic architecture, but also by contemporary poets and dramatists. The argument traces specific parallelisms in Shakespeare's plays, analyzing how historical figures like Medea, Æneas, Brutus, and Sinon were drawn from emblematic traditions. Furthermore, it examines the direct references found within the text of Pericles, arguing that Shakespeare was intimately familiar with the emblem literature of his era, which provided him with a rich repository of visual metaphors and moral philosophy.
