William Shakespeare details the destructive feud between the Capulet and Montague families in Verona, where ancient hatred repeatedly boils over into public violence and prompts strict warnings from Prince Escalus. Soon after the ceremony, the conflict escalates when Tybalt slays Romeo's friend Mercutio in a street brawl. Driven by grief and a desire for vengeance, Romeo kills Tybalt and is subsequently banished from Verona by the Prince, leaving the newlywed bride and groom only a brief night together before Romeo flees to Mantua.
Complicating matters further, Juliet's parents arrange a rapid marriage for her with the noble County Paris to ease her supposed grief over Tybalt's death. Desperate to avoid this forced union and remain faithful to her exiled husband, Juliet turns to Friar Lawrence for a solution. The friar devises a perilous plan, providing her with a potent sleeping draught that will mimic death for forty-two hours, allowing her family to place her in the ancestral tomb while he notifies Romeo to rescue her.
Unfortunately, the message fails to reach Romeo due to a quarantine, and he learns only of Juliet's apparent death from his servant Balthasar. Grief-stricken and desperate, Romeo buys a lethal poison in Mantua and hurries back to Verona to die beside his beloved. Arriving at the Capulet tomb, he encounters Paris mourning in the dark, slays him in a brief duel, and enters the vault to drink the poison just as Juliet begins to awaken from her slumber.
Finding her husband dead beside her, Juliet refuses to flee with the frightened Friar Lawrence and takes her own life with Romeo's dagger. The tragic double suicide finally brings the grieving heads of the Capulet and Montague families together over the bodies of their children, prompting them to end their generational feud and erect commemorative statues in honor of the true lovers.
