William Shakespeare examines the destructive anatomy of jealousy through the downfall of Othello, a respected Moorish general in the service of Venice. Having secretly married Desdemona, the daughter of a Venetian senator, Othello faces initial outrage from her father but secures the Senate's blessing and is immediately dispatched to Cyprus to defend the Venetian territory against a Turkish fleet. Accompanying him is his standard-bearer, Iago, a man consumed by bitter hatred for Othello after being passed over for a military promotion in favor of Michael Cassio.
Once stationed in Cyprus, Iago initiates a deeply calculated plot to ruin both Othello and Cassio. He manipulates a foolish gentleman named Rodorigo, who is infatuated with Desdemona, and orchestrates a drunken street brawl that leads to Cassio being stripped of his lieutenancy. Iago then plants the seed of suspicion in Othello's mind, falsely insinuating that Desdemona and Cassio are engaged in a clandestine affair.
To substantiate his manufactured claims, Iago relentlessly exploits circumstantial evidence, most notably a cherished handkerchief that Othello originally gave to Desdemona as his first gift. When Emilia, Iago's wife and Desdemona's attendant, inadvertently finds the dropped handkerchief and hands it to her husband, Iago places it in Cassio's lodging to be discovered. As Othello observes Cassio interacting with a local courtesan and hearing distorted accounts of the handkerchief, his reason is entirely overtaken by blinding fury and jealousy.
Consumed by the conviction that his wife is unfaithful, Othello confronts Desdemona, ignoring her desperate pleas of innocence and dismissing her unwavering devotion. Blinded by his vow of bloody vengeance, he suffocates her in their bed just moments before the truth comes to light. Emilia exposes her husband's villainy, revealing that Iago stole the handkerchief and engineered the entire slander.
Realizing the horrifying magnitude of his error and that he has murdered an entirely innocent and loyal wife, Othello falls upon his own sword and dies upon a kiss. Iago is arrested and condemned to face severe torture, leaving the Venetian authorities to reckon with the tragic devastation wrought by malice and unreasoning suspicion.
