At the center of the unfolding drama is old Martin Chuzzlewit, a wealthy and embittered man who is constantly besieged by his avaricious relatives—including the pious architect Mr. Pecksniff and the scheming Jonas Chuzzlewit—all eagerly anticipating his demise. Despite his deep mistrust of everyone around him, the old man retains a loyal, quiet companion in his young ward, Mary Graham.
Meanwhile, young Martin Chuzzlewit, the old man's grandson, falls deeply in love with Mary. Seeking independence, young Martin becomes an architectural pupil under the roof of the supposedly pious and benevolent Mr. Pecksniff in Wiltshire. Young Martin and the kind-hearted Mark Tapley eventually embark on an adventurous, disillusioned journey to the United States, where they encounter a society driven by rampant commercialism, blustery rhetoric, and opportunistic greed. Back in England, the dark undercurrents of the story culminate when the brutal Jonas Chuzzlewit sinks deeper into avarice and criminality, culminating in murder and a tightening web of guilt. Pecksniff's elaborate web of false sentiment and moral posturing finally unravels as his victims and dupes begin to see through his grand facade.
