A mysterious presence haunts Box Number 5, demanding a staggering monthly tribute and enforcing strict compliance, while tragedy strikes the crew with the inexplicable death of Joseph Buquet.
Simultaneously, the young and pure Swedish singer Christine Daaé achieves sudden, breathtaking fame during a gala evening, capturing the hearts of the audience and particularly the young Viscount Raoul de Chagny, her childhood friend. Raoul's devotion is immediately tested by jealousy and confusion as he discovers that Christine's sublime voice is the result of secret lessons given by a mysterious entity she believes to be the Angel of Music promised by her late father. This unseen mentor, known as Erik, is a brilliant composer endowed with a hideously deformed face, who lives in a hidden domain beneath the lake at the bottom of the opera's cellars.
As Christine is drawn deeper into Erik's subterranean world, she experiences both terror and profound pity for his tortured genius. Raoul attempts to rescue her from what he perceives as a dangerous madness, leading to tense confrontations at a masked ball and atop the opera's roof under the gaze of the Lyre of Apollo. Erik's possessive jealousy escalates into violent threats, culminating in the terrifying collapse of the opera's grand chandelier during a performance of Faust.
