Summary of “Five Weeks in a Balloon”

1,889 characters · 4 min read

Dr. Samuel Ferguson, a resolute Englishman of science and daring, conceives a bold enterprise to traverse the African continent from east to west in a specially designed balloon named the Victoria. Accompanied by his loyal friend Dick Kennedy, a seasoned hunter, and his faithful servant Joe, Ferguson sets out from Zanzibar after extensive preparation. Their mode of travel is entirely imaginary, relying on a clever invention that heats hydrogen gas to ascend and descend without parting with precious ballast.

The narrative follows their rapid flight across untamed territories, vast forests, and forbidding mountains. They encounter hostile native tribes, dangerous wildlife, and severe tropical storms, all viewed from the safety of their aërial platform. Along the route, they link the discoveries of earlier explorers, tracking the paths of Barth, Burton, and Speke, and ultimately verifying the long-sought sources of the White Nile near Lake Ukéréoué by discovering the initials of traveller Andrea Debono carved upon a rocky island.

Further along their perilous journey into the interior, they rescue a young Lazarist missionary from the agonizing torments of a sacrificial stake among the Nyam-Nyams. The missionary soon passes away from his accumulated wounds, leaving the travellers deeply moved. They continue their voyage over arid plateaus that gradually yield to the oppressive heat and terrifying emptiness of the great Sahara desert.

Water supplies dwindle perilously, threatening the survival of the expedition as the fierce sun beats down upon the endless sand. The travellers face the grim reality of thirst and exhaustion in a landscape littered with the remains of ancient caravans. Through unwavering resilience and Ferguson's cool calculation, they press forward toward the western coast, determined to achieve their goal against seemingly insurmountable odds.
