Ernest exposes the ruthless mechanisms of the emerging capitalist monopoly, demonstrating how the accumulation of unconsumed surpluses inevitably leads to economic breakdown, imperialism, and the consolidation of tyrannical power by a handful of corporate magnates.
Avis Cunningham, initially steeped in the class prejudices of her privileged background, meets Ernest and undergoes a radical transformation as she investigates the harsh realities of industrial exploitation, such as the maiming of workers like Jackson and the systematic suppression of truth by the courts and the press. Despite the awakening of the working class and the rise of socialist strength, the capitalist elite, supported by the courts, the military, and the emerging Black Hundreds, relentlessly crush every labor uprising and political challenge.
The narrative intensifies as the socialists and labor unions attempt a general strike to avert a planned imperialist war, demonstrating the immense collective power of the working people. However, the oligarchy outmaneuvers the resistance by buying off key labor unions into favored castes and ruthlessly breaking the unorganized majority. Ernest prophesies a long, grinding struggle of castes and classes before the common people can finally overthrow the iron heel of despotism and claim their freedom.
