The epic narrative begins with Pelias receiving an oracle that warns of his death at the hands of a man wearing a single sandal. When Jason arrives in Iolcus having lost a sandal while crossing a river, Pelias sends him on the seemingly impossible quest for the golden fleece to be rid of him. Jason gathers the most renowned heroes of Greece, including Heracles, Orpheus, and the twin sons of Boreas, building the magnificent ship Argo with the guidance of Athena. After performing sacrifices to Apollo, the heroes set sail, facing numerous trials and adventures along their journey.
The voyagers first land at Lemnos, an island inhabited exclusively by women who have slain their male kin, and are welcomed warmly before continuing their journey. They encounter further trials among the Doliones, where a tragic night battle leads them to mistakenly slay their former host, King Cyzicus, prompting deep mourning and funeral rites. Moving forward, they brave the treacherous land of the Bebrycians, where Polydeuces defeats the arrogant king Amycus in a boxing match. They then encounter the blind seer Phineus, whom they deliver from the torment of the Harpies. In gratitude, Phineus provides crucial prophecies regarding their future voyage, warning them about the clashing Cyanean rocks and the arduous path ahead.
With the divine intervention of Athena and the guidance of the seer, the Argo successfully navigates the terrifying clashing rocks, marking a turning point in their voyage. They reach the Phasian river in Colchis, where King Aeetes confronts them with impossible tasks before he will part with the golden fleece. Aeetes demands that Jason yoke two fire-breathing bronze bulls, plough the field of Ares, and sow dragon's teeth that sprout into an army of earthborn warriors. Facing these seemingly insurmountable odds, Jason receives secret aid from Aeetes' own daughter, the sorceress Medea, who has fallen deeply in love with him through the machinations of Hera and Aphrodite.
Medea provides Jason with a magical ointment that renders him invulnerable to fire and weapons for a day, and instructs him on how to defeat the earthborn men by throwing a stone into their midst to make them turn upon one another. Jason successfully accomplishes the harrowing tasks, but Aeetes still refuses to hand over the fleece and plots to destroy the heroes and burn their ship. Realizing her betrayal has been discovered and fearing her father's wrath, Medea flees with Jason and her brothers, leading the heroes to the sacred grove where the golden fleece is guarded by an unblinking serpent. Using her magic, Medea lulls the monster to sleep, allowing Jason to seize the prize.
The return journey proves equally perilous as the Colchian fleet pursues them across the seas. To delay their pursuers, Medea orchestrates the tragic murder of her brother Apsyrtus, throwing the Colchian forces into disarray and mourning. Following this bloody deed, the gods demand purification, sending the wanderers through strange and distant lands, including the river Eridanus and the halls of Circe, where they are cleansed of their guilt. Guided by the Nereids and protected by Hera, they safely bypass the deadly hazards of Scylla and Charybdis and the enchanting songs of the Sirens.
After weathering further storms that drive them into the treacherous sands of Libya, where they carry the heavy ship across the desert and lose comrades like Mopsus and Canthus, the heroes finally reach the shores of Crete. There, they overcome the bronze giant Talos through Medea's sorcery. Ultimately, the Argo returns safely to the shores of Greece, fulfilling the destiny of the heroes and cementing the legend of the Argonauts in classical literature.
