The story begins in a conventional London nursery where the Darling children—Wendy, John, and Michael—live under the watchful eye of a devoted Newfoundland dog named Nana. Their orderly domestic life is disrupted by the nightly visits of Peter Pan, a rebellious boy who has escaped the responsibilities of growing up and lives in the fantastical Neverland. Peter loses his shadow in the nursery, and when Wendy helps him sew it back on, he invites her and her brothers to fly away with him to his island home.
Upon arriving in the Neverland, the children encounter a vibrant world populated by lost boys, redskins, mermaids, and a ferocious band of pirates led by the infamous Captain Hook. Hook harbors a deep-seated hatred for Peter, driven both by a past encounter where Peter fed the captain's hand to a ticking crocodile and by Peter's unshakeable, infuriating confidence. Wendy settles into a maternal role for the lost boys, building a cozy underground home and telling stories that bridge their wild existence with memories of home.
Tensions escalate as the pirates relentlessly track the children, leading to a dramatic confrontation at the mermaids' lagoon where Tiger Lily is rescued and Wendy is nearly captured. The conflict culminates in a night of intense peril when Hook captures the sleeping boys and lures Wendy to walk the plank on the Jolly Roger. Peter, having survived a poisoned draught through the self-sacrifice of Tinker Bell, infiltrates the ship and leads a successful counter-attack, defeating Hook in a classic sword duel.
With the danger vanquished, Wendy, John, and Michael finally return to their grieving parents in London, bringing the other lost boys with them to be adopted. Peter, fiercely protective of his freedom, refuses all offers of a conventional upbringing and returns to the tree tops with the fairies. Years later, as Wendy grows into adulthood and loses the innocent ability to fly, Peter reappears to claim a new generation, taking Wendy's daughter Jane to the Neverland for the endless cycle of spring-cleaning.
