Cook Ristiina, chambermaid Anna, bookkeeper Aukusti, coachman Juronen, and stable hand Pekka navigate a tense atmosphere of workplace hierarchy, gossip, and unrequited desires. Pekka and the maid Hanna are engaged to be married, sharing humble dreams of leaving service to establish a small farm of their own, though their future is constantly threatened by the predatory advances of Aukusti and the sharp tongue of Anna. Anna schemes against Hanna out of jealousy, conspiring to have both her and Pekka dismissed by the masters of the house under false pretenses.
Meanwhile, Juronen maintains a stoic, observant silence, stubbornly withholding his affections from Ristiina despite her persistent hints about marriage and her obsession with prophetic dreams. Ristiina interprets her nocturnal visions as divine portents, particularly concerning a lottery ticket she holds. In a moment of theatrical generosity, she shares half of this ticket with Hanna, cementing a bond forged in superstition and mutual affection.
