Joe Breedlove and his fiercely combative partner Indigo Bowers ride into a region torn apart by a decades-old feud between the rival desert towns of Jingle Bell and Big Elk. The conflict began when Big Elk seized the county seat, and since then, local outlaws have exploited the animosity to find safe harbor while the townsfolk continually exchange gunfire. When a corrupt local leader is exposed and killed, Joe seizes the moment to orchestrate a peace banquet at a neutral ranch house, hoping to finally unite the two factions. Indigo, skeptical of human nature and convinced the gathering will end in disaster, attends anyway with quiet resignation.
Despite the initial goodwill, old grievances immediately resurface over trivial arguments about the past. The polite dinner erupts into total chaos as the men overturn tables, smash lamps, and exchange gunfire in the dark. Afterward, the two towns retreat in opposite directions, leaving the ranch house in ruins. Joe and Indigo emerge unscathed from the wreckage, acknowledging that human nature remains stubbornly unchanged. The partners quietly retrieve their horses and head south once more.
