The story opens with Gregor Samsa waking up to find himself inexplicably transformed into a massive insect-like vermin in his bedroom. As a travelling salesman, his immediate anxiety centers on missing his train and facing the wrath of his demanding boss and family, whose debts he has been working tirelessly to pay off.
His family and the chief clerk soon discover his condition, leading to utter shock and horror. Gregor is locked inside his room, where he struggles to adapt to his new physical form while his family's financial situation forces them to take on jobs and lodgers to survive, slowly eroding their initial sympathy.
Over time, Gregor becomes an increasing burden to his parents and his sister Grete, who initially cares for him out of duty but eventually grows to resent his presence and the toll it takes on their lives. The tension reaches a breaking point when the lodgers discover Gregor wandering into the living room during a violin performance.
Convinced that the creature is no longer their son and is destroying their lives, Grete insists they must find a way to get rid of it. Isolated, starved, and wounded by an apple embedded in his back by his father, Gregor accepts his fate and quietly dies alone in the dark.
The family discovers his body the next morning with profound relief rather than grief. Free from the burden of his existence, Mr. and Mrs. Samsa and Grete take a tram ride out to the countryside, looking forward to a brighter future and watching their daughter blossom into a young woman.
