At the secluded Endelstow Vicarage, nineteen-year-old Elfride Swancourt lives a life untouched by the worldly complications of society. Her peaceful existence is suddenly quickened by the arrival of Stephen Smith, a young architect's assistant sent to superintend the restoration of the parish church. Stephen, whose background is far more humble than Elfride or her vicar father initially realize, falls deeply in love with her. Despite her initial hesitation and coquettishness, Elfride returns his affection with all the fervor of uncultivated youth, finding in his gentle and impressionable nature a mirror for her own romance-fed daydreams.
The idyll is abruptly shattered when the vicar discovers Stephen’s true origins as the son of a village mason. Though Stephen possesses an irreproachable character and high professional promise, Mr. Swancourt’s rigid social prejudices lead him to forbid the attachment absolutely. Faced with immediate separation and the terror of losing each other forever, the young lovers yield to a desperate impulse. Elfride elopes with Stephen to London, intending an immediate secret marriage, but her courage fails her at the threshold. Overwhelmed by the sudden realization of the social ruin and scandal awaiting an unwed girl, she retracts her promise and returns home unblushing and disgraced only in her own secret thoughts.
Separated by distance and the stern barrier of her father's disapproval, Stephen departs for Bombay to build a fortune that might ultimately render him worthy of her hand. Meanwhile, the vicar contracts a wealthy and advantageous marriage with Mrs. Troyton, bringing a new sophistication into Elfride's life and introducing a distinguished circle of acquaintances. Among these is Henry Knight, a brilliant barrister and literary reviewer who had previously penned a sharp critique of Elfride’s early attempt at romance. Knight is also Stephen’s former preceptor and the most profound intellectual influence in the younger man's life.
As Knight becomes a frequent visitor at Endelstow, his mature intellect and unyielding standards exert a powerful fascination over Elfride. She struggles between her lingering devotion to the distant Stephen and the compelling, if severe, admiration she begins to feel for his older friend. Knight, initially viewing Elfride as a mere child prone to impulsive folly, gradually finds himself drawn into her orbit, all the while unconscious of the invisible bond connecting her to his absent protégé. The gathering storm of conflicting loyalties and concealed truths threatens to break over them all, pointing toward a tragic reckoning.
