Introduction

You live on a planet threatened by deadly silver spores called Thread that fall from the red star and devour all organic life. You rely on massive bronze and golden dragons to burn the spores in midair, but social divisions among regional leaders jeopardize your world's fragile security.

Jaxom and his unique white dragon Ruth uncover ancient starships and navigate political turmoil to secure the future of Pern.

The book traces this struggle through four major parts. You will explore how Pern defends itself against Thread, follow the unusual bond between Jaxom and Ruth, examine the crisis of a stolen queen egg solved by time travel, and discover advanced technology hidden in the Southern Continent.

  • How does a dwarf white dragon alter the political balance of Pern?
  • What secrets do the ancient starships hold about your ancestors?
  • Can you prevent a devastating war between the Holds and Weyrs?

1. World Background and Defense

You live on a planet threatened by a deadly space-spore. This organism falls from the sky during fifty years of attack during a Pass.

Pern's defense against the space-traveling Thread relies on a two-stage system combining fire-breathing dragons and soil-burrowing grubs.

Dragons were developed from a mythical Terran beast and bred to char Thread in midair. A matching symbiote grub was introduced into the soil to consume any Thread that evaded dragonfire and to protect vegetation.

When the original southern continent proved unstable, the colonists moved north into caves, eventually forgetting the grub's protective purpose and systematically burning them from the land until F'lar revived their usage. This gap lasted through two hundred Turns of the planet Pern around its primary during an interval.

Social and Political Structures

You navigate a complex society divided into specialized domains.

Pern maintains a structured society divided into Weyrs for dragon protection, independent Crafthalls, and Holds led by Lord Holders.

Crafts are independent of Hold affiliation, and Craftmasters ensure fair distribution of goods on a planetary basis. The population supports the non-arable Weyrs through tithes.

Lord Meron of Nabol and Lord Sangel of South Boll represent the traditional Holder factions who challenge Benden Weyr's liberal leadership and Jaxom's status. Six Weyrs pledged to protect Pern struggle to maintain order as four hundred Turns brought too many subtle changes.

2. Jaxom and Ruth

Jaxom unexpectedly Impresses Ruth, a remarkably small white dragon possessing high intelligence, perception, and blended dragon characteristics.

You discover that Ruth is half the size of his clutch-mates. Some observers initially dismiss him as an oversized fire-lizard. He proves to be perfectly proportioned, capable of flight, and uniquely intelligent and perceptive.

Jaxom rescues the tiny white dragon from its uncracked egg at Benden's Hatching Ground. You later raise him at the old stables of Ruatha Hold. It has been a Turn and a half since Ruth arrived at Ruatha during your twelfth Turn there.

The White Dragon

Masterharper Robinton champions an educational network where young leaders and craftsmen study together. You analyze problems objectively and learn inter-craft cooperation to prevent isolation.

Jaxom begins a fostering arrangement at Ruatha with Groghe's son Horon. You also attend instruction at the Smithcrafthall with F'lessan and Beneiek alongside eight Holder sons and three Crafthold boys who show equal talent.

You exchange information and learn to talk sensibly about any subject. You learn to express thoughts, accept new ones, examine them, and analyze objectively. You think toward the future to preserve vital knowledge.

Training and Firestone

A dragon must learn the specific mechanics of chewing firestone and managing its second stomach to produce flame. Dragonriders must carefully supervise their beasts during firestone consumption. Improper chewing or lack of control over the digestive gases results in failure to produce continuous flame or leads to painful regurgitation.

Jaxom secretly takes Ruth to a remote mountain ledge to feed him firestone from Crom mines. You successfully produce a tiny trickle of flame after initial trial and error.

  • Take the dragon to a remote, deserted location away from fire-lizard surveillance.
  • Feed the dragon a lump of firestone while reminding it to think of its second stomach.
  • Allow the dragon to chew and swallow the stone, waiting for the gaseous rumble to begin.
  • Regurgitate any accumulated firestone ash outside the living quarters if digestion causes distress.

3. Crisis and Time Travel

The theft of a queen egg from Benden Weyr threatens to instigate devastating conflict between dragonriders.

Desperate Oldtimers from the Southern Continent steal Ramoth's queen egg to revive their dying population, pushing the northern dragonriders to the brink of launching an all-out war of retaliation. There are 248 remaining dragonriders left in Pern, and only 5 surviving bronzes in the South. The Benden Weyr crisis occurs on 15.5.26.

Lessa and the Benden dragonriders discover the queen egg missing, prompting mass outrage until Masterharper Robinton forcefully argues against dragon fighting dragon.

The Stolen Egg

Following the panic caused by conflicting fire-lizard reports during the crisis, leaders order that all pets be banded with distinct Holder or Harper colors and taught to stay away from the Weyrs.

Menolly paints color bands on her fire-lizards in the copyroom at the Harpercrafthall, using Harper blue and journeyman light blue framed by Fort Hold lattice yellow.

  • Gather fire-lizards and hold them still for marking.
  • Apply distinct colors corresponding to the owner's Hold or Craft.
  • Instruct the creatures to stay away from the Weyrs unless specifically ordered.

When caught in Threadfall during tactical maneuvers, riders and dragons suffer severe flesh-scoring burns that require immediate application of soothing herbal salve to prevent infection and promote healing.

Jaxom applies numbweed to Ruth's leg and to his own facial and arm scores after being clipped by Thread in the Keroon desert.

  • Wash the scored area with clean water to remove dirt and residue.
  • Apply a generous handful of numbweed salve directly to the Thread-scores.
  • Prop up injured limbs and allow the balm to take immediate effect.

Returning the Egg

Using temporal displacement allows a rider and dragon to return a stolen object without detection.

By calculating time jumps accurately, a dragon can travel backward in time to place an object into its original location before anyone realizes it was missing, thereby averting disaster. You can jump 12 turns backward into the past.

Jaxom and Ruth use their ability to go between in time to secretly return the stolen queen egg to the Benden Weyr Hatching Ground a turn ahead of discovery.

  • Assemble necessary gear including a rope sling and protective fur covering.
  • Cover the dragon's white hide with dark mud for camouflage during night travel.
  • Calculate the appropriate temporal jump using known stellar coordinates.
  • Land quickly in the Hatching Ground, deposit the egg, and jump back to the present.

4. Southern Exploration and Ancient Technology

Exploration of the Southern Continent reveals ancient starships and advanced records left by Pern's original settlers.

Toric and his holders manage the southern territory despite the presence of isolated Oldtimers. You can carve out holds and map dense jungles that dull chopping blades. F'lar and Robinton coordinate with Toric to secretly funnel adventurous men and women to the Southern Continent to expand holdings without provoking the Oldtimers. Six to eight people are sent in the first shipment to Toric's Hold. It takes nine days to sail back along the southern coast.

Southern Continent Expansion

Cove Hold requires specific adaptations against heat and natural elements rather than northern designs. Sharra successfully argues against northern blueprints, insisting on southern-style pilings, thick walls, and wide windows for the new Cove Hold. It takes eleven days to complete.

You can construct holds using specific methods:

  • Build off the ground on pilings to allow air circulation under the floor.
  • Construct wide windows to catch every breeze.
  • Use black reef rock for foundations and flooring.

Southern architecture utilizes local black reef rock and treated hardwoods brought by craftsmen.

Discovery of Ancient Ships

The prehistoric visitors arrived on Pern via starships, which were preserved and hidden beneath natural-looking earthen mounds in the Southern Continent. Guided by fire-lizard memories and aerial perspectives, Jaxom uncovers the metallic, glass-reinforced vessels that brought their ancestors from the Dawn Sisters. Three starships or cylinders are discovered buried beneath grassy mounds. The ships feature advanced, non-metal technology, automated sliding doors, and intricate control panels with colored operational buttons.

Master Fandarel activates a green button on a panel inside one of the newly excavated ships, causing a heavy, sealed door to retract smoothly into the hull for the first time in millennia.

Conclusion

Jaxom and Ruth unite past technology with present survival, proving that unconventional choices can secure a community's future. You see how personal responsibility and curiosity transform individual hardship into collective safety.
