Introduction
You face a world torn apart by the approaching Last Battle as ancient prophecies unfold across the nations. The fall of the Stone of Tear shatters political stability while the Forsaken break free from their prisons to destroy the Dragon Reborn.
Rand al'Thor struggles to unite the Aiel and claim his destiny as the Dragon Reborn while ancient Forsaken scheme to destroy him from the shadows.
You must navigate shifting alliances, regional conflicts, and the dangerous fracture of the White Tower as Aes Sedai turn against one another. The book examines these crises through major themes, tracing political betrayal, cultural awakenings, hidden magic, and flights across hostile lands.
As you read, you will find answers to several crucial questions:
- How does the truth about Aiel history shatter their ancient identity?
- Why do the Forsaken use subtle manipulation instead of direct attacks?
- What causes the catastrophic split within the White Tower?
- How do channeling rules dictate the survival of the Dragon Reborn?
1. White Tower Politics and the Forsaken
Elaida struggles to unify a fractured White Tower while the surviving Forsaken plot to control the Dragon Reborn.
Tower Leadership
You watch Elaida face internal resistance after her elevation to the Amyrlin Seat with the support of the Red Ajah and the Aiel. Sisters casually make major decisions without consulting her opinion, showing a distinct lack of deference. Nearly three thousand years of Amyrlins making thrones dance give way to council members dismissing her view on the Saldaean army. Elaida keeps a triptych of Bonwhin in her study to remind herself of the steep price of failure. A thousand years have passed since a Red wore the stole, yet she must now discipline dissenting sisters and root out opposition.
During a council meeting, sisters discuss the disappearance of the Panarch Amathera without asking Elaida's view. She demands daily penances and strict reports from high-ranking sisters like Joline and Javindhra.
Padan Fain infiltrates the White Tower in oversized, dirty clothes while presenting himself as a foolish petitioner from Lugard. He seeks the Horn of Valere and his stolen dagger, which are stored in the Tower strongrooms.
The Gathering of the Chosen
Four of the surviving Forsaken meet in secret via gateways to assess the threat of the Dragon Reborn. Thirteen immortal members originally entered the conflict, but four are dead and one has betrayed them. Lanfear, Rahvin, Sammael, and Graendal debate how to handle Rand al'Thor and whether he is truly Lews Therin Telamon reborn.
Sammael steps through a gateway from a seaside balcony to join Lanfear, Rahvin, and Graendal as they argue over strategy.
Lanfear proposes that the surviving Forsaken work together rather than fighting the Dragon Reborn separately. She warns that Ishamael failed because he relied on bullying and fear against an opponent who remembers past lives. By presenting the Dragon Reborn kneeling to the Great Lord on the Day of Return, they can secure maximum honor.
2. Trials and Escapes on the Road
Siuan, Leane, and Min navigate capture, forced oaths, and bounty hunters while fleeing across Murandy.
A binding oath offers a dangerous path to temporary freedom.
Admer Nem and his family accuse Min, Siuan, and Leane of trespass, arson, livestock death, assault, and theft during their accidental fire at the farm. Lord Gareth Bryne sentences the three women to work off the cost of damages instead of hanging or flogging them.
Bryne orders the women to work for him at normal wages until the repair costs, the price of six milkcows, a silver mark for the bump on the head, and the stolen purse are fully repaid. He offers them a choice between working in his manor with an oath or working under guard in the fields with lower wages.
Leane utilizes her inherited Domani arts of charm and manipulation to influence Lord Bryne and secure favorable treatment. She kneels gracefully beside Gareth Bryne's chair and rests her fingers on his wrist while pleading for mercy during the trial.
To prevent Bryne from setting guards on them night and day, Siuan intentionally takes an extremely solemn oath by the Light and her hope of salvation and rebirth to serve him in any required way. Min is horrified and forced to follow suit along with Leane, repeating the extreme oath because a lesser one would mean constant imprisonment in the fields.
Good Queen's Justice
Barim Halle brings reports that the Stone of Tear has fallen to the Aiel, Callandor has been drawn, Elaida has been raised as the new Amyrlin Seat, and the former Amyrlin Siuan Sanche was stilled and executed alongside the false Dragon Logain. Gareth Bryne receives sweeping news from the border town of New Braem regarding the fall of Tear and turmoil in Tar Valon.
The High Lady Alteima gains an audience with Queen Morgase in Caemlyn to trade intelligence about Rand al'Thor for political shelter. Alteima arrives at the Royal Palace in a carriage and speaks with Morgase about the fall of the Stone and the presence of the Aiel savages.
Lord Gaebril exercises absolute hypnotic control over Queen Morgase, dismissing her and charming visitors with intense psychological dominance. Gaebril enters the room, places a familiar hand on Morgase's shoulder, and casually orders her to go to sleep while her eyes become glazed and obedient.
Logain's Reappearance
Logain reappears after abandoning the women, bringing a stolen purse and demanding fulfillment of promised revenge. Logain intercepts Siuan, Leane, and Min on the road while riding a tall black stallion and leading three mares, threatening to leave them if they do not act quickly.
Min experiences a puzzling viewing of a radiant halo of glory around Logain despite his desperate and hunted status. Min watches Logain tighten his hands on his reins while a halo flares around his head just before he speaks of staying a while longer.
3. Rhuidean and the Aiel Crisis
Rhuidean stands as a ruined, half-built city containing priceless artifacts from the Age of Legends used to channel the One Power. Stepped and slab-sided palaces reach eight or even ten stories high. The burned Avendesora tree grows a hundred feet high near the central plaza.
Rand reveals the true Aiel history as pacifist refugees who broke their sacred pledge, causing a profound psychological crisis.
You witness clan chiefs and warriors experience the bleakness after learning the historical truth. Men sit staring for days before throwing down their spears and running away from their identity as Aiel.
Hadnan Kadere directs workmen loading wagons with angreal, sa'angreal, and ter'angreal. Two men accidentally stumble into a twisted redstone doorframe that acts as a doorway to another world before Lan rescues them.
The Bleakness
Couladin exploits the Aiel identity crisis by claiming to be the Car'a'carn and gathering disaffected warriors who reject Rand. He refuses to meet with Rand, threatens to flay him, and builds an opposing force by absorbing warriors suffering from the bleakness. Bruan notes that Couladin is currently building half a dozen feuds as men join societies among the Shaido instead of throwing away their spears.
Moiraine discovers a disc representing a seal on the Dark One's prison that can be scraped and chipped with a knife. Total number of disc seals ever made for the Dark One's prison is seven like it. Moiraine uses her silver-wire-hilted belt knife to scrape a tiny flake of solid black cuendillar from the disc found in the Rhuidean plaza. Since heartstone cannot be broken by any known force, this degradation implies the prison defenses at Shayol Ghul are failing.
Rand plans to unite all Aiel clans and lead them across the Dragonwall to impose peace and prevent chaotic regional wars before Tarmon Gai'don. During the Aiel War, four clans crossed the Dragonwall and fought campaigns lasting two years. Rand now intends to lead eleven clans across the Spine of the World, drawing on that historical precedent.
Accessing saidin fills Rand with both life and the corrupting taint of the Dark One. Maintaining control requires extreme mental discipline within the Void to avoid being overwhelmed by destruction and madness.
4. Channeling Mechanics and Captive Forsaken
Rand captures Asmodean to learn the secrets of channeling while Mat bears the heavy burden of ancient military memories.
Shielding and Inverting
A channeler can be cut off from the One Power by a hidden female shield that uses an advanced technique called inverting. Asmodean is shielded from saidin by a weave that cannot be seen by male eyes or easily detected by female eyes. He calls the concealment technique inverting, which allows a channeler to hide the flow of their channeling.
Rand uses saidin to snatch Jasin Natael, who is actually the Forsaken Asmodean, and pin him to the wall in Rhuidean.
Men and women cannot form a circle to link their power together without the presence of at least one woman. While women can link their powers without men up to a circle of thirteen, men cannot link at all without female participants. Asmodean explains that this is a fundamental balance in the Pattern, related to the general difference in strength between genders.
Rand suggests to Asmodean that they link to improve the teaching sessions, but Asmodean explains why it is impossible without a woman like Moiraine or Egwene.
Aes Sedai oaths compel them to state what they believe to be true, even if the underlying premise is factually flawed. Asmodean points out a weakness in the Three Oaths taken by the Aes Sedai, explaining that Moiraine speaks absolute truth as she perceives it, which allows her to voice misconceptions as reality.
Moiraine believes men and women were equally strong in the Power during the Age of Legends and states it as absolute fact, despite male channelers inherently possessing greater general strength.
The surviving Forsaken operate independently across the world, pursuing personal agendas while awaiting the Dark One's release. Asmodean reveals information on the whereabouts and motivations of his peers, noting Sammael's rule in Illian, Graendal's stay in Arad Doman, Moghedien hiding in the west, and Rahvin's control through a queen.
Asmodean explains that he serves Rand under duress because the other Forsaken like Demandred or Rahvin would kill him on sight, and he fears Semirhage and the Dark One more than death.
Ancient Memories
Stepping through a twisted redstone doorframe burdens a person with a flood of historical and military memories from past lives. Mat Cauthon's own childhood memories from the Two Rivers are now blended indistinguishably with thousands of memories of past battles, leadership, and deaths from different eras.
Mat clearly remembers commanding the flanking attack that turned the Trollocs at Maighande and dancing in the court of Tarmandewin.
Ta'veren are rare individuals who force the Pattern to weave itself around them, creating chaotic ripples when multiple ta'veren congregate. Moiraine identified three young men from the same village as ta'veren, but proximity between powerful ta'veren creates intense turbulence comparable to being caught in a whirlpool.
Mat reflects on how Rand affects the lives of everyone around him by simply entering a town, realizing he himself is ta'veren though not as strong as Rand.
5. Aiel Culture and Dream Suppression
Wise Ones enforce strict societal accountability and harsh discipline while Rand protects hidden Darkfriends to avoid Tower interference.
Toh and Ji'e'Toh
Aiel cultural constructs like toh and ji'e'toh dictate intense personal accountability, leading individuals to perform humbling tasks to clear perceived dishonor. Aviendha explains that upon giving up the spear to become a Wise One, her weapons were surrendered to a smith to be fashioned into gifts for the three men and three women she most hates, a practice mandated by the Wise Ones to teach humility.
Aviendha visits Rand to deliver blankets and hand him a gold-inlaid dragon belt buckle made from her old weapons, insisting it cancels any debt between them.
Rigorous physical punishment and strenuous labor are utilized by the Wise Ones to enforce obedience and correct breaches of honor or rules. Trainees and acolytes are subjected to corporal punishment, such as being switched or performing exhausting physical tasks.
- Run fifty times around the camp to temper stubbornness and clear the mind after failing a summons or task.
Dream Wards
Channelers can utilize specific wards of Spirit to protect their sleep from external dreamwalkers, though they remain vulnerable to their own subconscious thoughts and memories. Rand automatically sets wards of Spirit to shield his dreams from intrusion by the Wise Ones or others. However, despite these protections, his mind is continually visited by intense, vivid dreams involving Elayne, Min, and Aviendha.
- Set the wards of Spirit to shield dreams from outside intrusion before falling asleep.
Rand knows that Isendre, Hadnan Kadere, and his men are Darkfriends, and that Asmodean traveled with them. He cannot expose them because Moiraine and the Aes Sedai would mercilessly interrogate and execute them, which would also jeopardize his secret arrangement with Asmodean.
6. The World of Dreams and Refugee Journeys
Nynaeve and Elayne disguise themselves as merchants to cross hostile territory while exploring the deadly hazards of Tel'aran'rhiod.
You enter Tel'aran'rhiod simply by sleeping with a twisted stone ring ter'angreal next to your skin. The stone ring is all flecks and stripes of red, blue, and brown, and has only a single continuous edge. Corianin Nedeal was the last recorded woman in the White Tower to enter the World of Dreams unaided over four hundred years prior. Now, Egwene explores this realm while Nynaeve and Elayne navigate physical roads, falling victim to forkroot poison.
Forkroot is an exceptional herb that entirely prevents anyone from channeling or even moving their muscles effectively when ingested. Ronde Macura administers forkroot tea to Nynaeve and Elayne in her shop, rendering them completely helpless and unable to channel or escape until rescued.
Forkroot Poisoning
When brewed as a bitter tea, forkroot temporarily disables channelers, making them as helpless as kittens by blocking their ability to embrace the True Source and numbing their physical body. Nynaeve confesses to Egwene that she and Elayne were forced to drink forkroot tea by Macura and Luci, reducing them to helpless states until Thom and Juilin rescued them.
Aes Sedai use secret visual signals displayed on buildings to communicate urgently with their network of local informants. An emergency signal consisting of specific weeds with colored ribbons alerts Aes Sedai sisters of a high-priority message or danger in the area. Nynaeve spots a bunch of broomweed wrapped with a white ribbon and a dangling yellow ribbon tied with three splits outside a seamstress shop in Mardecin. This specific emergency signal was last used approximately three hundred years ago.
The Stone Ring
The World of Dreams presents lethal hazards, where nightmares can manifest physically and trap or kill careless dreamers. If a dreamer remains in Tel'aran'rhiod while experiencing a nightmare, the nightmare becomes real and can persist even after the dreamer leaves. Inexperienced dreamers who let themselves drift into a fond dream or fail to unmake threats can trap and kill themselves. Egwene demonstrates this to Nynaeve by creating two terrifying monstrous men who physically attack Nynaeve and tear her dress before unmaking them.
You learn that figures like Birgitte reside in Tel'aran'rhiod between lifetimes, waiting to be summoned by the Horn of Valere or spun out into the waking world as newborns. Birgitte reports seeing multiple Forsaken members secretly tracking each other in Tel'aran'rhiod, though they remain focused on mutual plotting rather than ordinary dreamers. She spots Rahvin, Sammael, Graendal, Lanfear, Demandred, and Semirhage stalking each other. Meanwhile, Aiel Wise Ones view untrained dreamwalkers as dangerous children and demand that outsiders pledge not to act in the dream world without permission.
7. The Shadow Government in Salidar
A faction of Aes Sedai opposing the Amyrlin Elaida establishes a clandestine refuge in the Altaran village of Salidar.
Escaping the direct authority of the White Tower, various sisters and their Warders gather in a remote village located one mile from the Eldar river. They hide their presence while organizing provisions and maintaining an appearance of normality to avoid detection by Elaida.
Min, Leane, and Siuan arrive in Salidar with Logain and are confronted by senior sisters including Sheriam, Carlinya, Myrelle, and Anaiya.
Logain reveals to Siuan and Leane that he was originally discovered by Red sisters in Ghealdan who shielded him and planted the idea of claiming to be the Dragon Reborn. This conspiracy aimed to create turmoil and capture a false Dragon one year before he proclaimed himself. Siuan exposes the Red Ajah's conspiracy to the Salidar council to convince them of the necessity of using Logain to discredit Elaida.
Leane and Siuan persuade the gathered sisters that simply being a group of dissidents is insufficient. You must elect a new Hall of the Tower and choose a new Amyrlin to present yourselves as the true White Tower rather than mere rebels. Siuan also offers to redirect her former network of eyes-and-ears from the Blue Ajah to feed selected intelligence to the council while sending false reports back to Elaida in Tar Valon.
Reasoning from historical texts and prophecies, Siuan deduces that Rand al'Thor has fled to the Aiel Waste because the Aiel are known as the People of the Dragon and their Wise Ones hold ancient ties to the prophecies. Siuan cites Gitara Moroso's notes and old library books to convince the council to send Green sisters Kiruna and Bera to search the Aiel Waste.
Building an Army
A political faction aiming to overthrow a major power requires a brilliant military commander to execute its strategy effectively.
When a group of twenty-odd riders approaches, Nuhel reports the arrival of the veteran commander Gareth Bryne, prompting the Salidar leaders to plan his recruitment. Bryne enters the hidden stronghold, intending to reclaim his runaway servants, but finds himself trapped by political maneuvering. Bryne discovers that Mara Tomanes and Amaena are actually Siuan Sanche and Leane Sharif, both of whom had been stilled.
Bryne correctly deduces that the splintered Aes Sedai want him to command an army against Elaida. He refuses to be a puppet and lays down hard conditions for the war:
- retain sole command authority and discipline over soldiers;
- ensure military advice is seriously considered;
- commit to the war without backing down halfway.
Sheriam and the other Aes Sedai deliberate in private using the One Power before ultimately accepting Bryne's conditions without reservation.
