Introduction

You live trapped in a relentless cycle of birth, suffering, and death, mistaking a solid physical world for absolute reality. You experience fear, guilt, and conflict because you believe you are separate from your source.

Gary Renard reveals that the physical universe is an illusion, a projection of a split mind that forgot its true identity as spirit. The central idea of the book is that you can wake from this dream using the spiritual principles of A Course in Miracles, guided by two ascended masters named Arten and Pursah who materialized in Gary's living room.

The following sections explain how the illusion began, how the ego maintains your guilt, and how true forgiveness undoes time itself.

  • What is the origin of the material universe?
  • How do ascended masters teach spiritual awakening?
  • What mechanism dissolves the ego permanently?

1. Ascended Masters and the Illusion of Reality

You experience the material world as solid and real, but higher teachers appear to reveal that physical reality is an illusion. Ascended masters can materialize physically as symbols to help students understand spiritual principles.

Ascended masters appear as physical symbols to teach that God did not create the material universe and that the cosmos is a virtual reality projection of the mind.

Gary Renard sat alone in his living room meditating and praying to Jesus, then opened his eyes to find Arten and Pursah sitting on his couch looking like ordinary, healthy people in contemporary clothing. They materialized in Gary's living room in Maine during Christmas week of 1992. They explained that any form experienced in the physical universe, including human bodies, is symbolic and that God and pure spirit have no form.

God is not the creator of the material world, duality, or opposites. If God created the world of decay, death, and suffering, He would be the author of an idiotic tale. Instead, God is perfect Love, and the physical universe is a false projection stemming from a separated, unconscious thought system.

The entire physical universe, parallel universes, and human bodies are projections of the mind and function like a virtual reality dream. Birth and death cycles, along with the physical solidity of objects, are tricks of the mind. The universe functions like a movie or virtual reality simulation that covers up an unconscious thought system.

Arten compared the transition between lives and dimensions to walking out of one virtual reality movie and into another.

Jesus taught pure non-dualism, recognizing that the universe is nothing and that only God and spirit are real. Pure non-dualism operates on the principle that like comes from like, meaning anything created by a perfect God must also be perfect and eternal. Because the physical world is imperfect, it is an illusion with no true existence, and Jesus achieved total liberation by identifying solely as pure spirit.

Heaven is a state of unflawed oneness and perfect Love where God extends Himself as Christ, creating simultaneous extensions that share absolute joy without space or time. Before the illusion of separation, there was only the eternal Always, representing non-duality and boundless ecstasy. God created Christ as an extension of the whole, and Christ in turn creates new extensions, resulting in an endless sharing of perfect Love that is completely abstract, unchanging, and united.

2. The Secrets of Existence and Mind Training

The universe began when a split aspect of Christ entertained a tiny, mad idea of separation, and A Course in Miracles provides the exact mental training to undo this error.

For a fraction of a nanosecond, an aspect of Christ wondered what it would be like to play on its own. This tiny, mad idea led to a series of mental divisions that created consciousness, the ego, and the split mind.

The first division introduced consciousness and perception. The second division created a choice between the Holy Spirit and the ego. The third division cemented identification with the ego while pushing the truth into the unconscious.

Terrified of divine retribution for attacking God, the mind accepted the ego's plan to run away. By projecting the thought of separation outward, the cosmos was created as the ultimate scapegoat and a defense structure. The Big Bang and the physical universe thus manifested as an ingenious hiding place from supposed guilt, making God and the source of problems appear to be outside the mind.

A Course in Miracles provides a comprehensive, self-study training program to transform the mind rather than fix the world.

Unlike religious organizations focused on changing external effects, the Course is a one-on-one metamorphosis into Christ done at the level of the mind. It teaches students to rely on the Holy Spirit as their true boss and guide. Pursah explains that her Gospel and other texts are precursors to the complete training found in A Course in Miracles.

If students attempt to interpret the Course rather than simply understand and apply its instructions, they repeat the historical error of creating thousands of conflicting human belief systems. There are over 20,000 different kinds of organized Christian churches in the world today because humans applied their own interpretations to Jesus's original message. The Course represents a single consistent thought system directly from its Teacher.

The Course is a mind-training program designed to help you recognize the meaninglessness of the illusory physical world and correct the only real lack, which is a sense of separation from God. Gary heard a clear inner Voice state to renounce the world and the ways of the world, making them meaningless to him. Students mistakenly believe they are being asked to sacrifice physical things, whereas the teaching merely recognizes the lack of real value in worldly forms. Salvation happens entirely at the level of the mind and cause, rather than the level of the body and effect.

You can apply this training through daily steps:

  • Ask the Holy Spirit to help you and guide your decisions.
  • Let your mind be still for at least a few minutes each day.
  • Think about God and how much you love Him daily.

3. The Ego Plan and True Forgiveness

From birth, the ego acts as a master illusionist by manufacturing endless problems, conflicts, and mysteries. Its central directive is to keep the mind looking outward so that it never looks inward at the buried guilt of the separation from God, following the rule to seek and never find.

The ego maintains its illusion by distracting humans with external problems and the pursuit of things out there in the world.

Gary mentions popular culture mysteries like extraterrestrials, crop circles, or presidential assassinations as examples of looking for answers out there. The deep, unhealed guilt over the supposed separation from God is too terrifying to face internally, so the mind projects it outward onto bodies and events. This creates special love and special hate relationships, allowing people to feel like innocent victims rather than the makers of their own dream.

Gary previously experienced his wife Karen as a source of negative atmosphere, but later realized she was just a figure in his dream used to excuse his own ineffectiveness.

True forgiveness requires looking past outward illusions and recognizing that whatever is seen outside is merely a symbol of what is inside the mind.

To undo the ego, you must stop trying to change the world and instead change your mind. Because there is no one else outside, judging others is actually judging your own self-image. True forgiveness gives mercy ahead of time and releases illusions by recognizing that separation never occurred.

Gary refrains from giving an aggressive driver the finger during a traffic incident, realizing the aggressive driver symbolizes his own impatience.

You can apply these principles through specific mental actions:

  • Monitor thoughts to catch automatic judgment and attack
  • Remember the phrase Love holds no grievances during key situations
  • Forgive the symbolic images seen outside instead of trying to change others

True forgiveness is built upon specific mental components that recognize the unreality of the world and dissolve unconscious guilt. You must remember you are dreaming and authored the dream to externalize guilt. By forgiving both the projected images and yourself for dreaming, and by choosing the strength of the Holy Spirit, you recognize that nobody is truly outside of you.

Pursah gave Gary a specific thought process example to repeat when confronted by an upset, affirming that if the other person is innocent, you are also innocent.

You can work through these steps during conflicts:

  • You are not really there.
  • If I think you are guilty or the cause of the problem, and if I made you up, then the imagined guilt and fear must be in me.
  • Since the separation from God never occurred, I forgive both of us for what we haven't really done.
  • Now there is only innocence, and I join with the Holy Spirit in peace.

By realizing that frustrations with others are symbols of your own unconscious resistance to truth, you can stop reacting with anger and view others through unconditional love. Gary applied the idea during a difficult circumstance with his wife Karen when she talked constantly while he tried to work, allowing him to feel like love rather than fighting back.

You can maintain this mindset by using practical reminders:

  • Remember the idea that Love holds no grievances whenever a conflict or judgment arises.
  • Recognize personal irritation as a symbol of internal denial rather than blaming an external person.

Intellectual comprehension of the Course is insufficient, and you must apply true forgiveness to the problems and relationships of daily life. By forgiving perceived wrongs rather than arguing, the mind uses the Course as a ladder to return to the awareness of God.

You can anchor these habits through consistent practice:

  • Practice the Course's Workbook lessons, one per day.
  • Apply the Course's principles to everything perceived in daily existence.
  • Use true forgiveness with the help of the Holy Spirit rather than engaging in arguments.

Through consistent repetition of workbook lessons and course principles, the mind transitions from automatic judgment to automatic forgiveness. This practice collapses time and eliminates unnecessary future suffering by aligning with the Holy Spirit. Gary compares repeating workbook lessons to learning how to quit smoking after twelve years through strong motivation.

You complete this training by maintaining strict adherence to daily materials:

  • Repeat and follow Workbook lessons to the letter
  • Read the first half of Lesson 68 through the third sentence of the fourth paragraph
  • Practice forgiveness repeatedly until it becomes second nature

4. The Holy Spirit Alternative and Healing

The Holy Spirit reinterprets the world as a classroom, showing that physical sickness originates in the mind and that true healing is always forgiveness.

While the ego made the world of conflict and judgment to reinforce the sense of separation from God, the Holy Spirit uses everyday experiences as lessons to bring the mind back to peace. The ego attempts to validate a real physical history and future, but the ultimate response to the illusions of perception is that the world never happened.

Instead of reacting with anger or viewing an aggressive person as a threat, you respond with love to both expressions and cries for help. You perceive every action in the world either as an expression of love or as a call for love.

  • Respond to any situation or behavior in the world with love, whether it appears as a loving act or a call for love.

The holy instant occurs outside of time and space whenever you choose the Holy Spirit as a Teacher instead of the ego. This choice aligns you with your true self-interest, which is returning to Heaven by forgiving the symbolic contents of your own mind.

  • Choose the Holy Spirit as your Teacher instead of the ego to experience the holy instant.

All physical sickness and pain are decisions of the mind, not the body, and are used by the ego for its own purposes. The body is merely a projection of the mind, and illness is created at a larger, unconscious level rather than chosen consciously on the physical plane.

Mary Baker Eddy visited Phineas Quimby in Portland in 1863, where she was treated for a severe spinal malady and came to understand that all sickness originates in the mind.

Spiritual healing is never about the patient's body; it is always about forgiveness and self-healing. When witnessing another person's illness, you must view it as your own call for help and an opportunity to forgive your own dream.

  • Do not join with the patient's body or ask the Holy Spirit to heal the body.
  • Remember the first rule of spiritual healing: It is not about the patient.
  • Tell yourself inwardly: You are Christ, pure and innocent. We are forgiven now.

True prayer involves forgetting specific needs and joining with God in love and gratitude, which naturally results in inspired guidance as a secondary benefit. Asking for specific worldly outcomes is a form of looking on lack and separation.

  • Spend quiet time with God as soon as possible.
  • Remember Who you are and bring your peace with you.
  • Be determined to stay alert and disciplined against mind wandering.
  • Forget the things you think you need and lay your problems and goals on the altar as gifts.
  • Let go of everything and join with God's love in joyful communion.

5. Time, History, and Awakening

Time and space are vast illusions. The entire history of the universe happened in a single instant and is already over.

Time and space are pre-recorded illusions that will end when humanity stops feeding the ego and wakes up to eternal oneness with God.

The separation from God lasted only a tiny tick of time. The entire script of the universe was pre-determined and filmed during that instant. You are a timeless mind reviewing a pre-recorded dream. The universe will end not through physical collapse, but when everyone wakes up.

Salvation is the complete undoing of the ego's world of separation, change, and death. This process leads back to eternal Oneness with God. Because the physical world is an illusion built on the mistake of separation, salvation requires reversing perception laws through forgiveness.

Although the script is already written, you must play your assigned part through active forgiveness. Salvation depends on your active participation in choosing the Holy Spirit's script over the ego's script.

  • When faced with anger or conflict, repeat lines from the Course such as: I am as God created me. His Son can suffer nothing. And I am His Son.
  • Choose once again in every situation to take your place among the saviors of the world.

Major global crises must be met with true forgiveness rather than judgment, fear, or revenge. World events and tragedies are part of the ego's script designed to make you identify with the body and judge others. Retaliation creates an endless loop of violence.

On September 11, 2001, when terrorists attacked the World Trade Center and Pentagon, Gary Renard initially felt horrified. He then asked J for help and decided to practice forgiveness instead of joining in national outrage and revenge.

  • Give financial support or blood donations if appropriate during a crisis without anger or revenge in your heart.
  • Remember that world attacks prove this world is not God's world.
  • Leave political and military decisions to leaders while maintaining a state of forgiveness.

Death is not an end but a symbol of the illusory separation from God. The physical body is merely a temporary classroom projection. Mourning a loved one's death is fundamentally a misplaced longing for home and God.

Gary reflects on crying for his parents and realizing that mourning is really about missing his true state of Being with God.

In a holographic reality operating outside of linear time, Arten and Pursah revealed that Gary was the apostle Thomas two millennia ago. He wrote the Gospel of Thomas and will become Pursah in his next and final lifetime to achieve enlightenment. During their final scheduled meeting on December 21, Arten and Pursah revealed Gary's true identity and explained that Pursah is his future female bodily image appearing as age 32.
