Introduction

You live in a rapidly modernizing world where law enforcement struggles to keep pace with industrial crime. Wealthy nobility and secretive syndicates fight for power while ancient gods whisper of impending destruction.

Waxillium Ladrian and his companions investigate a conspiracy involving lost divine relics and discover a hidden southern civilization with advanced technology.

You follow this investigation from the bustling streets of Elendel to the frozen mountains of the frontier. The journey uncovers hidden truths about your world, your magic, and your history.

  • What secrets do the legendary Bands of Mourning hold?
  • Who leads the shadowy organization known as the Set?
  • What lies beyond the southern mists?

1. Prologue and Elendel Life

Waxillium Ladrian balances his law enforcement duties with noble expectations while uncovering dark past events and facing new divine warnings.

The Terris Village Tragedy

Growing up in the Village, you feel alienated from other Terris youths like Telsin, Kwashim, and Forch. They routinely break rules to sneak out into the city while you grapple with moral dilemmas and a desire to do what is right. Telsin is 16 years old in the prologue, and 15 years have passed since a previous violent crime in the Village.

Waxillium tracks his sister and her friends as they sneak out of the Village. He later discovers an anonymous tip he sent to the constables about his classmate Forch committing arson.

While tracking Forch through an old storage dormitory during a rainstorm, Waxillium discovers a young child tied to a plank and subjected to torture, revealing Forch's murderous nature. The old dormitory building stands 3 stories high.

Waxillium follows Forch into the upper meeting room and finds a five-year-old child gagged, bound, and bleeding from chest cuts.

During a desperate fight against Forch, who is augmented by a metalmind, Waxillium visually splits a suspended bullet into three components. He pushes only the rear knob while letting the rest go, causing the casing to fly backward and the bullet to drill into Forch's skull.

When crushed against a wall by Forch using a metal bar, Waxillium uses a constable's bullet he kept in his pocket to execute this lethal maneuver.

Wedding Day Disruptions

Twenty-eight years later, Waxillium works as a lawman in Elendel, balancing his crime-fighting duties with high-society expectations. 6 months have elapsed since Lessie's death.

Waxillium raids an old pub hideout with a criminal gang led by Migs, using his Allomantic abilities to disarm them before leaving for his wedding. The hideout contains 8 men in Migs's gang.

Steris plans her wedding with exhaustive contingencies, including arranging planned disturbances and creating multiple copies of items. Her hyper-preparedness is a coping mechanism for an unpredictable world.

Steris reveals that she made 6 copies of their wedding pendant sets, though 4 copies failed to arrive in time.

A slender man in a brown suit whose face temporarily turns translucent visits Waxillium before the ceremony to request his help. This kandra delivers a message from Harmony, warning that God is distracted and urging Waxillium to take on a new case.

As Waxillium struggles with internal grief over Lessie and tries to commit to his marriage with Steris, a water tower outside collapses onto the church dome.

During the Survivorist wedding ceremony in the glass and steel dome, the legs of a nearby water tower bend and spill tons of water, shattering the glass roof.

Lord Steming falls and knocks his head while scrambling off his seat, and Lord Drapen complains that his best pistol was ruined by the water.

2. Magic and Artifacts

Investiture in Allomancy and Feruchemy is specifically keyed to an individual soul via their Identity, which prevents unauthorized use of personal metalminds. A Feruchemist stores power within their Spiritual aspect. VenDell explains these principles to Marasi and Wax using projected charts of Feruchemical metals.

Divesting oneself of Identity while filling a metalmind could theoretically create unkeyed metalminds that anyone with Feruchemical blood can access.

Identity and Investiture

If a Feruchemist stores an attribute without an individual Identity attached, the resulting metalmind could potentially be usable by ordinary people who possess faint Feruchemical heritage. VenDell proposes the hypothetical creation of unkeyed metalminds and bracers that might impart innate abilities to the wearer. This builds upon fifteen hundred years of Terris tradition exploring physical Feruchemy.

The Legend of the Bands

The Bands of Mourning are legendary relics rumored to hold the powers and metalminds of the Lord Ruler, granting his immense abilities to whoever possesses them. Mythology surrounding the bracers dates back to before the Catacendre. VenDell shows projected evanotype images of murals depicting a pair of spiral-shaped bracers on a central dais.

A third-generation kandra named ReLuur went missing while investigating the Bands of Mourning, returning mutilated and stripped of one of his spikes. MeLaan explains that ReLuur returned missing an entire arm and half his chest after being ambushed in New Seran. This missing spike causes him to lose his sanity after two centuries spent chasing the relics.

While reviewing the photographs brought back by ReLuur, Wax spots his sister Telsin in an evanotype image taken just before the kandra was attacked. Wax recognizes Telsin standing between two men who are holding her arms tightly in broad daylight.

3. Journey to New Seran

The team travels by train and encounters armed train robbers, utilizing specialized gear and Allomantic speed bubbles to survive.

Steris explains that Elendel forces all railway and water traffic to pass through the capital. This central transit monopoly taxes outer city goods twice and suppresses independent trade loops to protect local manufacturing. Goods shipped between outer cities like Elmsdel and Rashekin must pass through Elendel, causing political unrest and anti-Elendel protests across the Basin.

House Ladrian must maintain strict books to convince lenders of their solvency. Steris treats financial audits as a mystery to solve rather than a chore, investigating a discrepancy of three clips in quarterly financials out of a total of five million.

Train Ambush

Unlike typical outlaws who conceal their identities, attackers show their faces during transit. Wax notices that the train robbers do not wear masks, meaning they do not care if they are seen. They employ unconventional tactics like horseback train ambushes and uncoupling private cars.

Ranette sends Wax a specialized double-barreled shotgun with extra-powerful loads and enormous slugs intended to stop Thugs or full-blooded koloss. You need increased Allomantic weight to handle the massive recoil. Wax opens the plush-lined case on the train and examines the massive shells that are almost as wide as a man's wrist.

Steris surprises everyone by actively participating in the defense of the train. Steris climbs onto the roof of the moving train and shoots a bandit with Ranette's heavy shotgun, rescuing Wax. Marasi deploys her Allomantic cadmium bubble to dilate time, trapping the escaping bandits just as they are about to flee and allowing Wax to capture them.

Arrival in New Seran

The city of New Seran is built across a series of large, flat-topped stone terraces split by streams and majestic waterfalls. You navigate the tiers using an extensive gondola network for transportation. Arriving on a cargo train, Wax, Marasi, and Wayne view New Seran's enormous stone terraces, waterfalls, and sky-crossing gondola lines.

Marasi picks up a small metal cube dropped by the man with the cane during the train robbery. Wax later identifies this artifact as the device that drained his steel reserves. Unlike Leechers who burn chromium and require touch, this small metal cube can mysteriously negate Allomancy from a distance when activated or presented.

MeLaan can change her appearance, select different bust sizes, or adopt a masculine physical form. MeLaan startles the hotel residents by first discussing bust sizes and later walking out wearing male bones and a sculpted masculine face.

Steris prepares comprehensive lists of potential negative scenarios that might occur during their residence. Steris presents a notebook to hotel owner Aunt Gin outlining scenarios ranging from shoot-outs and robberies to explosions, cattle stampedes, and floods.

4. Conspiracy in New Seran

Wax and his allies infiltrate high-society circles, uncover cemetery grave robbing, and confront the conspirators behind the attacks.

Releasing the need for others' approval grants significant psychological power over a situation. Wax reflects that social anxiety in formal settings stems from caring about the opinions of critical observers, whereas choosing complete indifference shifts the balance of control. Wax recalls how nervous he used to be as a child at high-society events before learning this principle.

Specific combinations of Allomantic and Feruchemical powers are exceedingly rare due to probability and genetic constraints. The woman notes that Wax is one of only three Crashers ever born, combining Allomantic Steelpushing with Feruchemical Skimming. Information brokers like Devlin trade in illicit secrets across the nobility, demanding digital bank transfers rather than public handshakes to protect their sources. Devlin refuses a public tip from Wax, insisting instead on a one-hundred-note bank transfer for details regarding a massive building project to the northeast.

Deliberately signaling suspicion to a guilty party can provoke predictable defensive mistakes and reveal their contacts. Wax shows Lady Kelesina a strange coin linked to a northeastern dig site, causing her to abruptly excuse herself to contact Suit. Extreme physiological measures can be deployed as an intentional distraction to bypass social protocols and force an exit. Steris consumes syrup of ipecac and saltroot, vomiting over the table to practice the skill of not caring about others' opinions.

  • Carry syrup of ipecac and saltroot in a purse for emergency situations.
  • Ingest the mixture to induce vomiting and clear the room or force an exit.

High-Society Infiltration

Religious frameworks centered on survival emphasize endurance against inevitable failure rather than permanent victory. Marasi observes the looming statue of the Survivor with a spear through his chest at the cemetery entrance, contemplating the contradictions of her faith. Adapting personal appearance and accents to match the cultural context of a target builds immediate rapport and bypasses suspicion. Wayne cuts the lace window out of Marasi's bodice and adjusts his own speech rhythm to sound older, successfully manipulating the gravekeeper Dechamp.

  • Modify clothing by cutting seams and adjusting necklines to project a desired social standing or vulnerability.
  • Shift speech rhythm and syllables to match the generational accent of the interlocutor.

Unmarked paupers' graves in city cemeteries often serve as hidden repositories for illicitly acquired remains and unidentified bodies. Dechamp digs four feet down into an unmarked grave behind a mausoleum to locate the bodies brought in by the day shift.

The Mansion Confrontation

Speed bubbles can be used tactically to evade gunfire, reposition unnoticed, and coordinate surprise ambushes against multiple armed opponents. Wayne deploys a speed bubble in a graveyard to let Marasi shoot at hidden attackers, then moves the bubble to detonate a stick of dynamite near their position. Assuming a terrifying persona through specific sensory details can psychologically break an opponent and force confessions without physical torture. Wayne dresses as Death and confronts Templeton Fig in his study, frightening him into confessing that a spiked metal object was sent to Dulsing.

Conspirators will eliminate compromised internal allies and frame outside investigators for the murder to trigger political escalation. The Terriswoman shoots Kelesina dead in her study immediately after Wax arrives, prompting a nearby maid to scream that Lord Ladrian committed the murder.

5. The Dulsing Warehouse

The team discovers a secret warship construction project and rescues Telsin, leading to an encounter with foreign technology.

Infiltrating the Compound

Wayne trips a guard and unplugs the power cables to extinguish the perimeter lights, allowing Wax, Marasi, and MeLaan to slip past unnoticed. You can bypass heavily secured zones by exploiting environmental controls and blind spots. Wayne launches himself fifty feet off a cliff to land in the camp below, relying on a stolen golden metalmind to instantly knit his shattered body.

Wax spots Telsin inside a guarded room with the brute he previously fought on the train, prompting an urgent shift in his mission objectives. Telsin fires four times, hitting twice to kill the tall, thick-armed man who tries to stop their escape. MeLaan reveals to Marasi that her head only contains sensory apparatuses while her memories are safely kept in her thigh compartment because enemies instinctively aim for the head.

The Foreign Ship

Marasi discovers the enormous ship filling the interior of the Dulsing warehouse, noting that it appears to have been transported and partially damaged before being hidden. The vessel features pontoon-like extensions, specialized propulsion components, and unfamiliar machinery lacking conventional gears or wires. Marasi unlocks the cage of a masked young man who later puts on a special disc medallion and reveals he can understand and speak their language.

The Set deploys specialized hazekiller hit squads equipped with aluminum bullets that cannot be Pushed. Wayne is repeatedly shot down by coordinated gunfire before healing, forcing Wax to fight off multiple suited Allomancers. The rescued youth distributes coinlike metal discs that function as metalminds.

  • Put on the medallion touching the skin.
  • Pour power into the metalmind to grow lighter.
  • Brace yourself with your feet and hold the wooden handholds.

The masked youth pulls a lever, causing a room to slide sideways out of the hull and rise into the air as a detachable boat.

6. Southern Scadrial and the Temple

The group flies south in an Allomantic airship, learns the history of the Sovereign, and discovers the truth about the Bands of Mourning.

Flight of the Wilg

Southern flying ships are powered by Allomantic Pushing and fueled by a reactive metal called ettmetal. The small vessel named Wilg and larger flying ships utilize Allomantic forces to turn fans and drive impellers. Ettmetal is highly volatile and explodes violently if it comes into contact with water.

Allik demonstrates the mechanics using a primer cube and explains how Brunstell's larger ship was brought down by a storm when some ettmetal got wet. The small airship cab measures six feet wide and is twice as long, with an estimated flight time southward to the mountains taking two hours.

Advanced Feruchemical medallions allow ordinary people to store and tap attributes, combine multiple powers, and survive harsh environments. The medallions are crafted by Excisors using nicrosil to grant temporary Investiture, combined with other metals like iron for weight and duralumin for Connection. They enable non-Metalborn to access powers such as warmth and flight, though multiple powers interfere with one another if incorrectly combined.

Allik swaps between medallions to stay warm in cold altitudes and to translate languages using blank Connection. A person might theoretically strap thirty-two medallions to their body to get all abilities, but this fails due to interference. Three is the maximum number of combined attributes seen in medallions by Allik.

Southern Scadrians attribute their survival of a historical global freeze to a figure known as the Sovereign, who visited them three centuries ago. Three hundred and thirty years have elapsed since the Ice Death and the Sovereign's arrival. The Sovereign arrived, saved the population, taught them the use of Feruchemical medallions, and established the Firemothers and Firefathers to charge them at Jaggenmire.

Edwarn Ladrian and a rival southern group called the Hunters are both racing to find the hidden mountain temple containing the Bands of Mourning. The Hunters previously sent a large ship up five or six years back to find the temple. The relics are a set of bracers containing the sixteen total Allomantic and Feruchemical abilities.

The Mountain Vault

The grand statue of the Lord Ruler at the entrance of the temple features a metal spike driven directly through its right eye. Wayne discovers that the oversized spear is actually made of wood with an aluminum head, and he twists it off to keep it as a potential valuable.

The hallway leading to the inner vault is heavily fortified with a succession of lethal mechanical and chemical traps designed to kill intruders. MeLaan triggers multiple traps, including a spear through her torso and a falling spiked log, demonstrating her immortality as a kandra.

Steris methodically charts her own perceived usefulness to the expedition on a graph, assigning numeric values to the members of the group. Steris ranks herself a 7, while Waxillium and MeLaan receive 100, Wayne gets 75, and Marasi is rated 83. Steris confesses to Marasi that being out in the blizzard with Wax makes her feel like she is burning and soaring.

Upon opening the innermost vault, the group discovers that the Bands of Mourning have already been stolen and the glass display case shattered. Telsin reveals herself as a high-ranking operative of the Set, turning on Waxillium and shooting him. Telsin shoots Wax just below the neck and in the abdomen before executing a sneak attack alongside her uncle Edwarn.

Telsin extracts Hemalurgic spikes from MeLaan's body after injecting her with an immobilizing substance, revealing how the Set acquires supernatural abilities. Marasi spots a spike glinting between Suit's ribs. The true Bands of Mourning were actually hidden in plain sight as the colossal aluminum spearhead from the statue, which served as a massive metalmind. Marasi taps the spearhead, unleashing an ocean of light and raw power that temporarily transforms her into the Ascendant Warrior.

7. Diplomacy and Revelations

Wax and Steris negotiate with the Malwish people, settle their personal relationship, and uncover lingering mysteries about the Sovereign.

Negotiating with the Malwish

Trade negotiations with the Malwish people are successfully brokered by offering them the return of their airship in exchange for opening trade routes and technological exchange. Captain Jordis initially demands the return of the airship and objects to the theft of the Bands of Mourning. Steris intervenes by pointing out that the Malwish need the ship to return home and proposes a trade partnership involving Metalborn access, which ultimately leads to a compromise and a draft agreement.

Captain Jordis confronts Waxillium over the captured airship and the recovery of the Bands, but agrees to trade after Steris highlights mutual benefits. Telsin manages to escape by faking her death during the chaos, leaving behind a pattern of blood on the snow and no body. Wax goes to check the skimmer for supplies and discovers only an eerie pattern of frozen blood drops, realizing Telsin has fled.

Epilogue and New Beginnings

Suit is eliminated by an agent of Trell in his prison cell after two weeks of captivity. A Faceless Immortal visits Suit in the constabulary prison and detonates an experimental explosive device, terminating Suit because recent advances have made civilization too dangerous and the hierarchy is no longer needed. A ragged beggar with glowing red eyes enters Suit's cell and detonates a wire-wrapped explosive package, killing them both.

Waxillium and Steris are spontaneously married in the tower penthouse before a Survivorist priest. Reflecting on his mortality and the choices that brought them together, Wax asks Steris to be his bride outside of formal contractual expectations, and she accepts. In the penthouse hallway, Wax proposes to Steris before a Survivorist priest, and she kisses him in response. A coin left among Wax's recovered belongings serves as a coppermind containing a historical memory of the Lord Ruler. When Wax touches the dual-metal coin given to him by a beggar, he taps a coppermind that projects a memory of a traveler with a spiked eye walking through a desolate, freezing northern town and visiting dying elders.
