Introduction
You often feel that the world you perceive through daily habits is the only true reality. When familiar routines break down, you struggle to find deeper meaning or alternative ways of understanding your existence.
Learning to see shatters ordinary reality and requires adopting the rigorous path of a warrior, mastering will, and casting off the illusion of personal importance through controlled folly.
Carlos Castaneda continues his apprenticeship under the Yaqui sorcerer don Juan Matus, pushing far beyond the initial lessons of the first book. You will explore how sorcery demands a complete restructuring of perception, an encounter with non-human allies, and the total elimination of self-importance.
- How do you stop internal dialogue to alter perception?
- What separates ordinary seeing from true energetic perception?
- How can you use death as an advisor to guide your daily choices?
1. The Initiation into Seeing
Seeing reveals human beings and the world in entirely non-ordinary energetic terms, shattering familiar reality.
Ordinary eyes only look at things to ensure they are there, but true seeing reveals the energetic reality. When a sorcerer sees, human beings appear as luminous eggs composed of circulating fibers of light. A person looks like an egg of circulating fibers with arms and legs like luminous bristles, connected to their surroundings by long fibers shooting from the abdomen. When you learn to see, the eyes of men appear as glowing areas emitting distinct patterns of pulsating light.
Castaneda observed don Juan's left eye shooting out sparks like rubber fibers while his right eye contained a deep, friendly pool of liquid light. By gazing lightly at don Juan's face instead of focusing on everyday features, you perceive amorphous glowing areas and explosions of light coming from the eyes. The left eye sends out protruding dashes of light in rhythmical explosions, while the right eye radiates liquid light that whirls inward. When an apprentice truly learns to see, not a single thing he knows prevails or remains the same.
After being submerged in the water ditch, Castaneda briefly doubted the reality of don Juan's hut and medicinal roots hanging on the walls. Sorcery involves applying one's will to a key joint of any object or system to interfere with its normal function. Don Juan explains that a sorcerer does not even need to see to practice sorcery; he only needs to know how to use his will and find the key joint of what he wants to affect.
Don Juan treats the spark plugs as the key joint of your car and uses his mesmerizing laughter and will to prevent the engine from starting. Human perception is capable of handling eight distinct points or worlds, of which ordinary feeling and understanding are only the first two. Don Juan demonstrates with a dry twig and points on the ground that humans are capable of navigating six additional points beyond ordinary feeling and understanding.
Don Juan draws eight points on the ground, creating a trapezoid figure with centers of uneven radiation, explaining that men know nothing about the remaining six points. Moving between the first two points constitutes what humans call understanding, but each of the remaining six points represents an entire world. When you are confronted by an ally or sudden terror, a warrior does not indulge in fear or die of fright, but maintains discipline until ready to act.
Don Genaro startles you by pressing his shoulder with crushing invisible weight, nearly knocking you to the ground, and later produces thunderous boulder noises and illusions to test your reactions. Undergoing intense spiritual encounters leaves you with an open gap and extreme nervousness, requiring you to go home and refrain from returning until healed. After washing Castaneda in a deep river, plugging his ears with leaves, and blindfolding him, don Juan instructed him to go home until his gap is closed.
On December 17, 1969, don Juan declared that you knew the techniques to go to the hills alone. You must deliberate carefully before making a decision, but once it is made, pursue it without worry or second-guessing. When Castaneda complains about the heat and distance during their car trip to Mexico, don Juan reminds him that his decision to come should have vanquished his petty fears.
You can practice specific techniques to master your perception:
- loosen feathers by shivering the entire body like a wet bird;
- twist the neck and rub cheeks on shoulders;
- shift the view of the world alternately from one eye to the other;
- go home and do not return until you are healed and your gap is closed;
- turn your back to the ally without thinking twice;
- allow the ally to come only when you are good and ready;
- open your gap and lurch out when you are strong enough to grapple with the ally;
- grabs the ally, keep him pinned down and maintain your stare on him for exactly the time you have to;
- move your eyes away and release the ally and let him go;
- worry and think before you make any decision;
- once you make a decision, be on your way free from worries or thoughts.
2. The Path of the Warrior
Living as a warrior demands constant awareness of death, absolute detachment, and strategic resourcefulness without self-pity.
Because knowledge becomes frightening and ordinary life is left behind, you must adopt the way of a warrior. This involves constant awareness of imminent death to destroy obsession and create indifference, absolute detachment from everything to avoid self-abandonment, and taking full responsibility for strategic choices without recriminations. Don Juan described his own past promise to destroy his parents' assassins during the Yaqui wars, a vow he later changed after realizing that oppressors and oppressed meet at the end and life is too short. Don Juan was about seven years old when his mother was killed by Mexican soldiers.
Sorcery makes you more vulnerable and cumbersome, exposing you to enemies and terrifying inexplicable forces. To survive this path, you must act like a warrior whose spirit is prepared only for battle and treats every struggle as your last battle on earth, letting your spirit flow free and clear. Everyday human activities serve as shields that protect you from becoming overwhelmed by inexplicable and unbending forces. Unbending forces open a gap in human awareness through which life can escape. Average people use the mundane activities of daily life as shields to distract their minds from fear and allow their gaps to close. Sorcerers, however, must deliberately select items from a path with heart to serve as their shields.
You can select your shields using specific steps:
- select deliberately every item that makes your world to use as a shield against inexplicable forces;
- choose to follow the path with heart by selecting things that give you great peace and pleasure to take your thoughts from fright.
You must never abandon yourself to any force, not even to death or mystical phenomena, to avoid being trapped. Don Juan severely reprimanded Carlos for indulging in the sensation of turning green in the water, explaining that a warrior treats everything with respect, is never available, and is always aware of their actions. Don Juan recommended that Carlos avoid touching water with his body surface for three or four months.
An ordinary person grows old in bitterness and self-pity after realizing their life's struggles ended in defeat. In contrast, a man of knowledge acts without expecting victory or fearing defeat, knowing that everything is filled to the brim and fully equal. Carlos shares the story of an 84-year-old conservative lawyer who spent 40 years in bitter self-exile after political defeat, which don Juan contrasts with the fulfilled life of a warrior.
Approach knowledge and life with a specific warrior attitude:
- go to knowledge with fear, with respect, aware that you are going to war, and with absolute confidence in yourself;
- strive without giving up, without a complaint, without flinching, until you see;
- always choose the path with heart in order to be at one's best and be able to laugh.
3. Mescalito and Peyote Rituals
Sacred allies like Mescalito act as tangible protectors that sharpen perception and provide deliberate purpose to life.
You might hear skeptics argue that peyote causes madness, rabies, and epilepsy based on wild stories of outsiders. Don Juan refutes this claim, explaining that the plant only harms those who approach it blindly without knowing what they are doing. While alcohol blurs images and drives people crazy, Mescalito sharpens everything and teaches you the right way to live.
During a gathering at Lucio's house, men like Genaro and Esquere cite rumors from government engineers claiming peyote ruins people. Don Juan defends it using his own lifelong experience.
An unintended visionary experience during a sacred ritual can be interpreted by a teacher as an undeniable omen and a gentle lesson from the power itself. When you tell don Juan about a disturbing vision, he dismisses personal details as nonsense compared to the sign that Mescalito hovered over you with his light and engulfed you. Don Juan laughs with delight upon hearing about the vision, declaring it an all-important omen because everyone present saw the light hovering over you.
A peyote ritual involves structured seating and cyclic intake of sacred buttons, meat, and dried fruit by a closed group of participants. The ritual circle consists of specific individuals, including the headman Mocho, don Silvio, don Juan, and four younger men, who engage in repetitive cycles.
You participate in the ceremony through strict steps:
- sit in the established order around the fire;
- sing individual peyote songs without preconceived order;
- take two peyote buttons four consecutive times during a cycle.
An encounter with Mescalito can induce powerful visions of climbing and flying, ultimately teaching a harmonious, simple song and transforming the seeker. Eligio takes ten peyote buttons during a nighttime ritual in the ramada, progressing from sheer terror and vomiting to rhythmic, harpist-like arm movements and the whistling of a new tune. He emerges with a beatific expression, humming a simple, repetitious melody taught to him by Mescalito.
You follow a precise physical procedure during such a journey:
- sit in the ramada with the peyote buttons placed between the guide and the seeker;
- take a peyote button and chew it very slowly;
- refrain from drinking water, using it only to swish in the mouth if needed;
- consume dry fruit and dry meat at intervals between buttons.
4. Allies and the Small Smoke
Smoking specific mixtures allows the apprentice to perceive non-human entities and cross energetic boundaries using the will.
Don Juan gives you a special mixture known as the little smoke. Smoking it allows a sorcerer's apprentice to perceive an ally, which is a non-human entity rather than a man.
You watch a peasant-like figure with a straw hat and bag stand on a boulder and point toward the ground before walking toward him. Don Juan later reveals this figure was not a man but an ally beckoning him from another region.
The guardian of the other world blocks passage into the unknown. On November 8, 1968, don Juan instructs you to smoke the entire bowl and observe the guardian of the other world, warning that your life may depend on it.
You lie on your left side, look at a fixed spot on your mat, and suddenly perceive a monstrous, winged, drooling animal about a hundred feet tall that strikes you with its wings and causes excruciating pain.
During a second session on November 11, 1968, don Juan reveals the secret of the guardian: it is simply a gnat. The insect acts as a barrier that appears as an awesome beast as high as the sky until you gather the courage to overcome it.
The little smoke removes the body, making you as free as the air and unhindered by rocks or walls. Although physical muscles are paralyzed, you can utilize the will or a mechanical lever to stand up and travel vast distances.
You follow a precise procedure to move under the influence:
- lie on your left side and stretch your legs;
- relax and place your right arm in front of your body at chest level;
- press your palm against the mat so your weight rests on it to use it as a lever;
- use an act of will to push yourself up when you want to.
5. Perception, Will, and Dialogue
Stopping internal talk and applying the physical power of the will breaks the ordinary grip of the perceived world.
People maintain the ordinary world through internal dialogue. Stopping this internal talk allows you to undo and alter reality. You must use your ears to take some of the burden from your eyes.
Castaneda spent two months practicing the exercise of listening to the sounds of the world and attempting to shut off his internal dialogue.
By concentrating intensely on hearing patterned sounds, you can perceive precise pauses in the sound structure. These breaks form a grid that superimposes onto the environment to reveal messages. While sitting in a mountain valley, don Juan played his spirit catcher four times, and you perceive pauses that align with a visual hole between distant hills.
Will is not courage or mental determination. It is an actual physical power emerging from the luminous fibers in the belly that links you to the perceived world. Don Juan recounted how his will fully emerged when he was chased by a hungry female mountain lion in the mountains, allowing him to stop her by caressing her with his will before running away.
You must practice specific orientations when you seek allies. They test you through environmental phenomena that require relentless pursuit and physical struggle.
You follow strict steps to find orientation in the mountains:
- Determine the right direction immediately upon arriving at the top of a hill and face it.
- Extend the right arm in front with the palm down and fingers stretched like a fan, except the thumb tucked against the palm.
- Turn the head to the north and fold the arm over the chest, pointing the hand toward the north.
- Dance by putting the left foot behind the right one and beating the ground with the tip of the left toes.
- Begin sweeping the arm slowly from north to south and back when feeling warmth up the left leg.
If your hand gets warm toward the west, you must follow an emergency escape protocol immediately. Drop everything and run downhill toward the flat area without turning around.
You continue the protocol on the flat ground:
- Drop to the ground upon reaching the flat area.
- Take off your jacket, bunch it around your navel, and curl up like a ball with knees tucked against your stomach.
- Cover your eyes with your hands and keep arms tight against your thighs until morning.
Building a fire is mandatory once you find your good direction. You must follow exact rules to establish a point of vigil:
- Sit on the first point where the hand gets warm.
- Clean an area big enough to build a fire about five feet away from the first point in a straight line in the direction you are looking.
- Gather all twigs in between those two points and make a fire.
- Sit on the first point and look at the fire to wait for the spirit.
You must also know how to handle nasty spirits that follow people home. You must forget about the nasty type of spirit and leave it alone. Do not try to entice it or follow it around the house.
6. Controlled Folly and the End of Importance
A sorcerer acts with total sincerity while inwardly knowing that nothing matters, freeing himself from personal importance.
Don Juan explains that controlled folly is a state of action where you act sincerely as if everything matters. Inwardly, you know that nothing matters at all. A man of knowledge has tempered his will until the realization that nothing is important no longer paralyzes him. His acts remain only the acts of an actor, sustained solely by his will and controlled folly rather than personal importance.
Don Juan practices controlled folly with everybody and in every single action he takes. He orchestrates a careful strategy involving you and the promise of a motorcycle to reach Lucio, which ultimately results in Eligio's successful peyote journey instead. Although he knows trying to remake Lucio is useless, he insists upon it anyway because caring for someone requires proper persistence.
To those who see, human beings appear as luminous creatures with rotating fibers of light. The long fibers originating around the navel are the true secret of balance. You can manipulate them as tentacles to anchor onto objects and move across seemingly impossible terrain.
Don Genaro crosses a 150-foot waterfall not by jumping or using acrobatic stunts, but by lengthening, securing, and pulling himself across space using his luminous fibers. While Pablito and Nestor catch the gist of this demonstration, you watch it purely as an incredible display of physical agility and acrobatics. Because you lack the ability to see, you entirely misinterpret don Genaro's waterfall demonstration as a mere physical circus feat. Don Juan explains that don Genaro risked a great deal to demonstrate the precise use of luminous fibers to unplug your perception, but you miss the entire energetic lesson.
