Introduction
You live in a world where magic hides just behind everyday boundaries, waiting for you to stumble through a mirror or a secret door. Cornelia Funke explores a realm where folklore is physical, dangerous, and governed by its own unforgiving laws. You find yourself facing the ultimate dilemma when a dark fairy curses your flesh, and every day brings you closer to turning into jagged jade. You must navigate a society where humans, dwarfs, and shapeshifters trade in enchanted artifacts while industrialization slowly strips the magic from the land.
The central idea is that survival requires you to barter with your own life, hunt forgotten relics, and plunge into ancient tombs to break a supernatural death sentence. You follow Jacob Reckless as he uncovers a hidden universe behind his missing father's study mirror. The narrative structure takes you across a vast, perilous continent where the race for the remains of the Warlock Guismond dictates every alliance and betrayal. You witness the deadly mechanics of magical curses, the cost of blood-tracking, and the terrifying power of legendary weapons like the Witch Slayer.
As you read the book, you will encounter several driving questions:
- How do you survive when a dark fairy curse hardens your skin into green jade?
- What secrets are hidden within the tombs of ancient warlocks and forgotten kings?
- Why does the rise of industrial engineering threaten the existence of magical creatures?
- How do you outwit ruthless rivals and predatory figures in a world behind the mirror?
- What ultimate sacrifice must you make to claim the only weapon capable of saving your life?
1. Curses and Antique Bottles
Jacob Reckless bears a fatal fairy curse and risks his life to capture dangerous magical entities.
The Chicago Auction
You enter a high-rise auction room on the thirtieth floor in Chicago to hunt for magical relics. Norebo Johann Earlking outbids you for a rare antique item before casually handing over his business card. He mentions knowing your family and your mother with unsettling familiarity.
You need something much more potent than common antiques to survive your affliction.
The Black Moth
A dark fairy issued a fatal curse after you uttered her true name. The magic manifests as a black moth with a blood-red outline stamped directly onto your chest. The dark fairy will soon use her sister's seal to reclaim her name, causing the moth to tear free and kill you.
Witch Practice in Schwanstein
You travel to Schwanstein to seek help from Alma Spitzweg, a witch operating a medical practice next to a cemetery. Alma combines modern medicine with traditional witch remedies to treat both humans and magical creatures. She grinds a pale spider-like root into powder to help you manage the constant pain.
Alma examines the moth imprint on your chest and delivers a grim prognosis:
- Two, three months: Alma's estimate of how much time you have left to live.
- Neither Djinn blood nor witch herbs can cure the dark fairy curse.
You decide to take matters into your own hands by tracking down a northern Djinn bottle. Northern Djinns are extremely dangerous entities imprisoned by seals on their bottles, seeking to kill anyone who releases them.
You track down a northern Djinn bottle, buy it, and use its blood in an desperate attempt to cure your fairy curse. You release the Djinn in an old chapel, trick it by ramming the bottle into its nostril, and cut its ear for its blood before shattering the bottle to destroy it. The violent encounter nearly kills you, and the blood fails to stop the spread of the jade skin.
2. The Tomb of the Warlock
The ultimate weapon capable of ending all wars with a single shot is hidden inside the tomb of the Warlock Guismond.
Guismond used the crossbow three times historically before it became the source of legends. The first bolt wiped out 50 thousand men. The second bolt killed 70 thousand soldiers. Valiant the Dwarf guides you and the shapeshifter Fox to the tomb, hoping to profit from the find. You expect to secure a valuable artifact, but you find the sarcophagus already broken open and looted.
Valiant leads Jacob and the shapeshifter Fox past a sleeping Giantling guard and through corpse-curtained tunnels to the hidden underground tomb of Guismond.
Fox continues to use her vixen shape-shifting abilities despite the heavy toll it takes on her youth and lifespan. Jacob remains internally troubled by her persistent use of the fur, knowing it steals her years, but cannot dissuade her.
The Riddle of the Tomb
Guismond's children concealed the palace and the crossbow by scattering their father's severed head, hand, and heart across three distant realms.
By translating the alabaster inscriptions on the tomb's floor, you realize the disposition of the remains:
- the head was sent to the eldest son in Albion;
- the hand was sent to the younger son in Lotharaine;
- the heart was sent to the daughter in Austry.
These locations match the directions west, south, and east.
Rivalry and Alliances
The rival Goyl treasure hunter known as the Bastard successfully loots the tomb ahead of you and enters into an alliance with the Crookback of Lotharaine.
Nerron, an onyx Goyl with malachite spots, drugs the tomb's Giantling guard and neutralizes Guismond's shadow using tree-bark resin. He cuts the head, hand, and heart from the corpse and slips out just as you arrive. Valiant had even bet 3 ounces of gold on the treasure hunter dying inside.
Nerron later reports to King Charles de Lotharaine, agreeing to take the king's son Louis along on the quest.
3. Blood Shards and Industrial Shifts
Magical tracking exacts a severe physical toll as regions transition toward industrial engineering.
Twin Spiders
Nerron utilizes a rare twin spider he stole in his childhood to track his competition. One spider mimics the movements and reports the perceptions of its twin over vast distances.
Nerron uses the spider hidden in Jacob's clothes to gather information about his whereabouts and target. Nerron was five years old when he stole the spider.
The First Bite
Blood shards are forbidden magical items used to locate objects touched by dark magic at a severe physical cost. To operate a blood shard, you must visualize the target item precisely and cut deeply into your own flesh until the object and its location appear in the glass. Selling these items carries a five years hard labor penalty.
Jacob attempts to use a blood shard purchased from a fake Witch in Albion, but is struck by excruciating chest pain.
The Dark Fairy's curse progressively tightens its grip, manifesting physical pain and altering the moth symbol on Jacob's chest. As time passes, the curse causes severe heart pain and physical deterioration, reminding you of the impending deadline for your life.
When Jacob attempts to use the blood shard, he experiences a crushing pain in his chest, and a tiny skull shape appears on the moth's wing over his heart. Less than two months remain of Jacob's estimated remaining lifespan.
Recovering the Hand
Guismond's severed hand is recovered from a bone-filled church in Fontevaud through a combination of Goyl resourcefulness and royal lineage. The hand's animated, separated parts attempt to defend themselves but are ultimately assembled by someone carrying the Witch Slayer's bloodline.
Prince Louis of Lotharaine triggers the reassembly of the hand's pieces without being harmed due to his ancestry, allowing Nerron to capture it. Prince Louis recently celebrated his seventeenth birthday. The ride from Fontevaud takes six days, and the hand was buried for approximately three hundred years.
4. Iron Flanks and Choke Vines
Naval warfare and magical traps complicate the race to collect the remaining relics.
The Dragon Figurehead
Albion's navy uses advanced modern iron-clad warships alongside traditional wooden fleets to combat the Goyl. The navy employs steam and wind power along with powerful cannons and torpedoes. You can also see iron-clad ships like the Vulcan, designed by Brunel, which traditional naval officers view with disdain.
Jacob visits Goldsmouth harbor and boards the flagship Titania, admiring the iron ship Vulcan from afar before setting sail to Flanders. The Titania carries 376 crew members and 45 cannons.
Jacob successfully steals the magical head of the Warlock Guismond from the figurehead of the sinking Albian flagship. Using a Rapunzel-hair rope and a Dwarf knife, Jacob cuts through the metal band holding Guismond's head to the Dragon figurehead while wearing protective gloves to neutralize magical defenses. He keeps the relic secure inside a swindlesack.
Mal de Mer Rescue
Transparent water spirits known as Mal de Mer save drowning humans by enabling them to breathe water and dragging them to shore. These entities inhabit coastal waters, capsizing boats for souls and transforming bodies into crystalline entities. However, they sometimes aid women and drag drowning humans deep into the water where they push a magical scale into their mouths.
When Jacob is drowning after the Albian fleet is destroyed, Fox pulls him down into the water where the Mal de Mer give him a scale that lets him breathe until he washes ashore.
Ambushes in the Forest
Nerron ambushes Jacob in the Lotharainian forest using fast-growing choke vines to incapacitate him and steal the artifact. Nerron uses a blowpipe to shoot a thorn-covered plant shoot that instantly grows into lethal choke vines, trapping victims and suffocating them before wild pack animals finish them off.
Nerron traps Jacob in a spiky cocoon of choke vines in the former royal woods, defeats him, steals the swindlesack containing Guismond's head, and leaves him for the wolves.
5. Bluebeards and Glass Rings
Predatory Bluebeards and dangerous glass rings threaten the lives of Jacob and his companions.
Glass Rings and Lifespans
Glass rings are dangerous magical items that allow someone to absorb another person's pain or fatal burden at the heavy cost of their own lifespan. Every second a glass ring is worn on someone else's finger drains a year from the wearer's life. These rings can sometimes become permanently stuck until they consume the entire life.
Fox secretly places a glass ring on Jacob's finger during his collapse to take on his suffering. Jacob angrily confiscates it and demands she never use it again.
The Portrait Clue
Historical portraits can conceal hidden clues regarding the whereabouts of legendary magical artifacts through the specific items depicted on the subjects.
- Hendrick Goltzius Memling paints his self-portrait in room 33 three years after Guismond's death.
- The artist depicts himself wearing a black coal-like stone around his neck.
- This pendant points directly to the missing heart of Guismond.
Jacob visits the Museum of Austrian History and inspects Memling's self-portrait. He realizes the pendant matches the description of the ancient Warlock heart.
The Bluebeard Modus Operandi
Bluebeards are serial predators who maintain clean-shaven faces to hide their identity while systematically capturing and killing young women after feeding off their fear. These killers often pose as charming noblemen and win their victims over with flowers and false romance. They trap them in red chambers where they extract terror before murdering them.
Local cases previously recorded four victims so far, alongside six more girls killed later in a past spree.
Jacob realizes through jeweler Hippolyte Ramée's testimony and his own memories that Guy de Troisclerq is a Bluebeard who has abducted Fox.
6. The Labyrinth and the Red Chamber
Navigating magical labyrinths and confronting centuries-old predators requires extreme sacrifice.
The Snow-White Method
Dark magic includes poisoning techniques that induce long sleep and force victims to speak oracular truths upon waking. Nerron administers this formula by soaking a Witch tongue in broth, pouring it into an apple core, and sealing it with chocolate.
The victim falls into a deep slumber for ten years. Upon waking or under the influence of an antidote, they can only repeat the exact information extracted during their unconscious state. Nerron previously tried this formula on a vagrant six years ago.
Nerron uses this method on Prince Louis in the palace library. This forces him to reveal that the heart of Guismond the Witch Slayer is hidden in Champlitte.
The Red Chamber
Bluebeards protect their estates with enchanted labyrinths that induce total memory loss and disorientation in intruders. The labyrinth is sown with narcotic flowers known as forgetyourself, whose scent grows stronger as the blossoms wilt.
Victims wander the paths, forgetting their names, their mission, and eventually starving or eating poisonous leaves. Eighty years had passed since anyone last made it through the labyrinth.
Jacob and Donnersmarck must use a simple tailor's thread as a lifeline to navigate Troisclerq's labyrinth while fighting off the narcotic effects of the forgetyourself flowers.
Bluebeards hoard the preserved bodies of their female victims in a secret red chamber to feed on their residual fear. Troisclerq has kept himself alive for approximately three hundred years using these methods.
Troisclerq preserves his victims suspended by golden chains in a red-walled chamber. He uses a special pitcher to collect their white fear, which acts as a life-extending force for his existence. Troisclerq locks Fox in his red chamber alongside nine other women, hanging her by golden chains as her fear trickles into the pitcher.
Trading for Freedom
When cornered by relentless pursuers, protecting a companion requires splitting forces and using strategic deception to secure their escape. You can buy enough head start for a vulnerable party to reach safety by trading yourself as bait. Jacob gives Fox the black heart necklace and stays behind at the Dark Witch's stable. He surrenders to Nerron and the Waterman, allowing Fox to escape as a vixen.
7. Head, Hand, and Heart
Assembling the Warlock's remains unlocks the Lost Palace and triggers ancient defensive spells.
The Dead City Reunion
You find Fox and Valiant near the ruins of the Dead City where Valiant has transported the remains of the Warlock Guismond. Valiant demands renegotiations for his expenses and brags about bribing a Giantling guard with a 1 year supply of elven dust to move the coffin. Valiant arrives in an enormous green automobile with a human chauffeur, noting that the cold weather keeps the headless king fresh.
Resurrection Mechanics
Jacob successfully resurrects the Warlock Guismond's magical influence by assembling his head, hand, and heart. Placing the severed hand, heart necklace, and head onto the headless corpse causes the entire body and gown to crumble into gray dust, manifesting the Lost Palace from the darkness. Crown Prince Louis is killed by a raging Giantling after the dog man shoots another Giantling during a confrontation. The Giantling yanks Louis from his saddle and snaps his neck with a single swipe, leaving him lifeless.
Steps of the Dead
Entering the Lost Palace triggers a Dark Witch spell called the Steps of the Dead, which forces intruders to relive past emotions. The hall records every spoken phrase, pain, despair, and madness from the palace history, requiring complete silence to avoid choking on the dark threads. Voices of a quarreling man, a screaming woman, and a crying child echo loudly through the corridors.
8. The Third Shot
The magical crossbow cures Jacob's curse and ends the Warlock's reign through a final confrontation.
Guismond's Time Trap
Guismond set a time-stealing trap in his throne room designed to harvest years from his descendants to fuel his resurrection. The throne room contains a magic circle and a clock where every minute spent inside steals a year of life and channels it to Guismond. Eight hundred years have passed since the Witch Slayer set his trap and the Livonian Brothers of the Sword were disbanded. Jacob and Nerron get trapped in the mosaic circle, causing Jacob's hair to turn white until Guismond's revived body breaks the circle.
Alderelf Crossbow Properties
The magical crossbow is forged from alder wood by immortal Alderelves and brings death to enemies while restoring life to the bearer's family. Guismond used the weapon because its magic only permits relatives or descendants of the creator's bloodline to survive its ultimate purpose. When Nerron shoots Jacob in the chest to test its bloodline properties, Jacob's fatal moth wounds heal completely and his regular heartbeat returns. Fox kills the resurrected Guismond with her blade to protect Jacob and stops the clockwork draining his life.
Escape Through the Mirror
Jacob and Fox use the throne room mirror to escape back to the human world, landing on a theater stage in Poland. Jacob tricks Nerron into thinking the mirror is the gateway home, allowing Fox to grab the swindlesack containing the crossbow and jump through with Jacob. They emerge onto a dark theater stage surrounded by red seats and prop mirrors, eventually exiting into a busy urban street with heavy traffic.
