Introduction
You face the overwhelming weight of ancient history and endless continental warfare. You must navigate a fractured world where past genocides leave toxic scars and trigger divine retribution.
An alliance of Malazan veterans, barbarians, and ascendants unites to stop the genocidal expansion of the fanatical Pannion Domin on Genabackis.
Steven Erikson charts this massive military campaign through a complex web of converging armies and suffering gods. The narrative reveals how total fanaticism demands absolute sacrifices from every mortal and immortal participant.
You will discover answers to several critical questions as you read the book:
- How do ancient species and dying gods influence mortal conflicts?
- What drives fanatical empires to wage campaigns of total extermination?
- Why must former enemies forge desperate alliances against shared threats?
- How do magical warrens and cosmic card decks shape battlefield outcomes?
1. Ancient History and Divine Retribution
Protracted wars between ancient species permanently alter landscapes, while absolute tyranny invites divine curses and catastrophic continental destruction.
Centuries of warfare between the T’lan Imass and the Jaghut exhausted both races. You discover landscapes left behind as toxic mired basins and bubbling silts from tectonic shifts. Pran Chole observes an ancient battlefield where ranag and tundra wolves perished side by side in a boggy sinkhole, their bodies encased in cracked clay layers over millennia. This fighting occurred 298,665 years before Burn’s Sleep for the 33rd Jaghut War, just eight years past since the glaciers melted.
The Fall of Jacuruku
Absolute tyranny and resistance can culminate in total scorched-earth annihilation when a ruler chooses to destroy his entire empire rather than relinquish control. Confronted by three converging Elder Gods aiming to liberate millions of slaves, the High King Kallor incinerates an entire continent. This turns living civilization into ash, bone, and endless wasteland.
Kallor sits smiling upon a throne made of burnt bones amidst the ruined wastes of Jacuruku, mocking the advancing Elder Gods by pointing out that there is nothing left to liberate. He achieved this after taking fifty years to conquer an entire continent, holding twelve million slaves and making seven million sacrifices 119,736 years before Burn’s Sleep under the Kallorian Empire.
Cosmic Architecture
Instead of executing Kallor directly, K’rul, Draconus, and the Sister of Cold Nights sentence him to unending mortal life. You see them deny him ascension, ensure all his achievements turn to dust, and force him to repeatedly rise only to fall again. The three Elder Gods curse Kallor to suffer the ravages of age, pain of wounds, and ruin of dreams, while they pull the remains of the slaughtered continent into a pocket warren.
To prevent a permanent scar on a young world after Kallor's devastation, K’rul gathers the collapsed remains and fashions a new warren within his own being. K’rul and his kin drag the chains around the slaughtered continent of Jacuruku and pull it into a freshly created warren, permanently wounding and breaking the Elder God in the process.
2. Convergence in Morn and Capustan
Trade routes and civilian travelers suffer immediate economic and logistical disruptions when divine conflicts destroy infrastructure. The destruction of the Gadrobi limestone bridge forces caravans to use a long-abandoned ford, causing severe congestion, muddy delays, and inflated prices for basic supplies sold by opportunistic merchants.
Disparate travelers, necromancers, and undead warriors traverse hazardous warrens and wastelands toward converging military campaigns.
Gruntle observes merchants like Manqui dying of strokes from the stress while caravan guards like Stonny and Harllo pass the time drinking expensive ale and fishing. In the 1164th Year of Burn’s Sleep, which marks the 4th Year of the Pannion Domin, these delays occur two months after the Darujhistan Fete. Elsewhere, Bauchelain and Korbal Broach inspect a crater left by the freeing of a Jaghut Tyrant, demonstrating an innate, unsettling aura and a calculated interest in historical cataclysms. They leave their camp to examine the forty paces diameter and four or five arm-lengths depth of the crater left by the chained Jaghut Tyrant's escape before discussing Moon's Spawn.
Toc's Journey
Traversing magical warrens can dislocate a mortal across vast distances and distort the perception of time. Toc the Younger is thrown into a malign warren by Hairlock, emerging days or weeks later onto a barren volcanic glass plain in Morn with damaged equipment and lost companions.
Toc wakes up on a plain of black obsidian glass two hundred leagues south to Morn, carrying a stretched bowstring, no horse, and an itchy scar over his blinded left eye across the seven leagues width of the obsidian glass wasteland. The clanless T'lan Imass Tool guides Toc through the wasteland of Morn, explaining the geography, the fate of Adjunct Lorn, and practical methods for crafting makeshift weapons. You can follow specific survival steps in this harsh terrain:
- travel to the coast a thousand paces to the southwest for food and seagrass to improvise a bowstring;
- harvest bone-reed from the nearby saltmarsh to use as shaft material;
- set snares for coast birds to gather fletching for the arrows.
Alliances and Convergence
Powerful lineage and elite warriors often intersect in remote regions through chance encounters and hierarchical challenges. Lady Envy travels with three Seguleh bodyguards whose strict social hierarchy is enforced through immediate combat challenges, though they submit to her casual authority. Senu challenges Tool outside the tower and is swiftly struck down by the T'lan Imass using the flat of his blade.
Mysterious tears in reality created or bridged by mortal souls draw the attention of immortal beings seeking underlying causes. Lady Envy and Tool discuss a mechanical portal or Rent in the sky that was bridged by a mortal soul, linking back to ancient K'Chain Che'Malle inhabitants. Lady Envy inspects empty K'Chain Che'Malle tombs and notes that the Matron was originally responsible for sealing the Rent before a new creature took her place.
Converging military campaigns and personal pursuits compel disparate powerful entities to form reluctant alliances for northern travel. Tool convinces Lady Envy to join a journey northward toward the Pannion Domin where Anomander Rake and Caladan Brood are preparing to wage war. Lady Envy agrees to join Tool, Toc, and her Seguleh servants on a journey after learning that her old travelling destinations and enemies are converging on the same war.
3. Cosmology and the Deck of Dragons
Burn's Slumber
You discover that the earth and warrens comprise the living flesh and bone of a sleeping goddess susceptible to outside poison. Following a tracking pebble, Quick Ben uses multiple warrens to descend into a vast living underground tunnel made of clay, diamonds, and bone, which constitutes the interior of Burn, the Sleeping Goddess. Giant clay servants struggle to hold up the failing roof against the corrosive poison of the Crippled God.
Quick Ben is dragged into the earth by a giant clay servant and learns that the Crippled God is poisoning Burn's flesh.
Divine entities exploit human suffering and artistic talent to manufacture despair and advance their malicious goals. The Crippled God commissions the carver Munug to create wooden cards depicting extreme pain, imperfection, and chronic loneliness. In exchange for these images of human anguish, the god heals Munug's tumours at the heavy price of paralyzing his legs.
Munug delivers a stack of wooden cards capturing his own soul's agony to the Crippled God inside a ragged hide tent. Artisans on remote trails can unknowingly become pawns in divine schemes by trading cursed or blessed items. Munug carries three interlocking ivory arm torcs that were blessed by being wrapped in Treach's moult-hair for nine days and nights. He sells them to Bridgeburner Corporal Picker for three hundred gold councils.
Munug sells three ancient ivory torcs to Picker and Blend in the East Tahlyn Hills before delivering carved cards to a crippled god.
Magic and Healing
Absorbing the blood of shadow creatures induces severe psychological dislocation, somatic pain, and a constant urge to escape.
Captain Ganoes Paran suffers from debilitating physical pain, vertigo, and fragmented memories stemming from the blood of a Hound of Shadow coursing through his veins. These symptoms manifest as feelings of drowning in darkness and a pervasive mistrust of authority and his own command. Paran struggles with internal agony, memories of Dragnipur, and feelings of inadequacy while managing the transit pass at the Divide.
Healer Mallet discovers that Captain Paran's physical collapse is caused by hidden sorceries running through his body like fireweed roots, causing him to effectively eat away at his own gut. The healer's Denul warren recoils when attempting to scan the captain, indicating an unnatural affliction that standard healing cannot resolve. Mallet informs Whiskeyjack that Paran is severely ill from conflicting internal sorceries and requires Quick Ben's intervention.
Following the rift with the Malazan Empire and the events at Pale, the remaining Bridgeburners are reduced to thirty-eight soldiers under the command of Captain Paran. Despite mutual distrust and the threat of resentment, the veterans are consolidated to form a core company. Whiskeyjack offers Captain Paran command of the thirty-eight remaining Bridgeburners at the mountain pass barricade.
4. The Birth of Silverfox and Allied Strategy
The Nature of Silverfox
Silverfox emerges as a composite entity possessing the merged souls of the deceased Malazan sorceress Tattersail and the ravaged High Mage Nightchill.
Silverfox was formed when a T'lan Imass bonecaster, an Elder God, and a mortal soul conspired within the influence of a T'lan Imass warren during Tattersail's death. This process bound the remnants of Nightchill and Tattersail into a single being.
Silverfox explains her origins to Whiskeyjack and the parley, stating she is born of two souls known to the Malazans.
The Mhybe serves as an untethered vessel because her mother was a bone-reader and her father held the Spear of War. This lineage makes her ideal for spirits and sorcery to braid two shattered souls together to feed the child Silverfox. The role of a mhybe is an intentionally temporary vessel created by ancient sorceries to hold combined souls and sustain an unnatural child until weaning, after which the mother withers and dies.
The Mhybe watches Silverfox play, noting that she gains a season of growth for every season the Mhybe loses, with weaning meaning the mother's death.
Silverfox's birth and existence act as a summoning call that commands the ancient, immortal armies of the T'lan Imass to gather once more. The T'lan Imass were bound by the Ritual of Tellann hundreds of thousands of years ago in a holy war against the Jaghut, and Silverfox now holds the authority to command them as their new leader. Silverfox announces to the parley that the T'lan Imass have heard her call and are coming from across the world.
Military Strategy
The allied forces of Dujek Onearm and Caladan Brood choose an overland march to engage the Pannion Domin with the ultimate strategic goal of liberating Coral in a single season.
The leaders plan to approach predictably to let Septarch Kulpath set his siege timeline on Capustan. They will drive south like a spear to liberate intervening cities and strike at the heart of the Pannion empire, building on twelve years of previous warfare between Dujek and Brood alongside four years of Pannion gains to be undone. Whiskeyjack immediately names Coral as the primary target when Brood asks which city they have targeted for the first campaign season.
Capustan faces an imminent siege by the Pannion Domin while its internal leadership remains deeply fractured between a prince and a coalition of high priests. Prince Jelarkan hired seven thousand mercenaries called the Grey Swords using his own funds. The Mask Council of high priests controls three thousand elite temple soldiers and restricts the mercenaries from fighting outside the city walls. Septarch Kulpath commands fifty thousand regular Beklite infantry in opposing forces.
Kallor and Caladan Brood discuss Capustan's defensive limitations and the refusal of the temple priests to allow a united front against the Pannion forces.
Tensions within the leadership boil over when Kallor verbally abuses Silverfox. Whiskeyjack responds by striking Kallor and Caladan Brood forcefully intervenes. Kallor attempts to seize Silverfox by the tunic to root out her hidden identity. Whiskeyjack strikes him across the face and Brood crushes Kallor's wrists to prevent him from drawing his sword. Whiskeyjack strikes Kallor's bleeding face with a gauntleted hand and states he would rip Kallor's heart out for harming a child.
Tool demonstrates how to create stone tools from obsidian cobbles and beach stones using hammerstones and an antler tip to punch minute flakes from the edge. Prehistoric flint and obsidian toolmaking relies on choosing specific stone types and applying precise percussive and pressure techniques to craft functional arrowheads and blades. Tool crafts four small stone tools—a backed blade, a thumbnail scraper, a crescent-bladed piece, and a drill—along with obsidian arrowheads from materials collected on lava flows and shorelines, using three swift blows to detach three long, thin blades of volcanic glass from an obsidian cobble.
You can follow these steps for knapping:
- Select obsidian or beach stone depending on whether it is stone that is water or stone that is sand.
- Strike the core with a hammerstone to detach long, thin blades and flakes.
- Use an antler tip to press out minute flakes from the edge of the larger flake to shape the tool.
5. The Siege and Defense of Capustan
Capustan faces a brutal siege by fanatical cannibal armies while the Grey Swords and allied forces mount a desperate defense.
Commander Brukhalian and Destriant Karnadas recognize that the Mask Council's insistence on holding outlying redoubts is suicidal. They choose instead to maintain the main walls and secretly accept second- and third-born Capan daughters into the Boar of Summer's ranks, expanding their forces despite local tribal exclusions. Brukhalian rejects the Mask Council's demands while quietly integrating twelve hundred new acolytes into the Grey Swords.
Septarch Kulpath commands roughly eighty thousand soldiers, including ten legions of Beklite regular infantry and eight thousand Urdomen heavy infantry. Beyond these professional forces lie a hundred thousand starving Tenescowri peasants. Shield Anvil Itkovian surveys the sprawling camps of the besieging army and the massive horde of Tenescowri arriving on overloaded barges outside the walls of Capustan.
The Grey Swords
The Grey Swords construct secret tunnels beneath Capustan and open old empty barrows as storage repositories to evacuate and sustain thousands of citizens during the assault. Shield Anvil Itkovian orders the tunnels to be opened to shelter the city's non-combatant population while fighters hold the streets.
You can use underground spaces for survival by following these steps:
- Open inner Camps and old empty barrows as storage repositories and shelter locations.
- Take charge of barracks Manes and Wings to direct citizens to hidden, defensible entrances swiftly.
Urban Warfare
The Bridgeburners use Moranth munitions, specifically sharpers and cussers, to breach heavily populated enemy encampments with minimal friendly forces. By timing the acid drops on the wax plugs of the clay grenados, sappers can detonate precise explosive paths, clearing obstacles and routing demoralized enemy forces. Spindle and eight other sappers use sharpers and cussers to clear a thirty-pace wide path through Pannion medium infantry at the north pickets, allowing the Bridgeburners to enter Capustan.
You can handle explosive grenados by performing these steps:
- Apply two drops of acid to the wax plug sealing the hole in the clay grenado.
- Wait ten heartbeats.
- Shout the word 'run' and sprint away to a distance of at least thirty paces to avoid being killed by the blast.
Whiskeyjack's heavy infantry uses four-squad wedges to rapidly shatter the Betaklite division during the battle west of Capustan. Almost a thousand four-squad wedges, of thirty-five to forty soldiers each, engage two hundred thousand Tenescowri encamped half a league to the east.
6. Sacrifice and Resolution at Coral
The allied forces execute final assaults against the Pannion Seer, culminating in profound spiritual sacrifices and the restructuring of divine realms.
Quick Ben uses his mastery to project eight massive, towering demons that tear through the leading Pannion legions, causing bloody chaos and forcing the Seerdomin mages to divert their attention and waste powerful sorcery to destroy the faked threats. Hedge and Spindle set cusser-bundles and crackers at the base of the square corner tower of the keep's outer wall, successfully collapsing the massive battlement.
The Fall of the Seer
Kallor suddenly slashes Korlat across the head and then slays Whiskeyjack when the Malazan commander's lead leg buckles during a lunge, before being driven off by golden sunfire sorcery. Itkovian approaches twenty paces from the T'lan Imass waiting before the eight hundred K'Chain Che'Malle, telling them he would embrace their pain, which prompts the entire host to bow their heads and kneel.
Final Sacrifices
Itkovian absorbs the memories of ancient T'lan Imass like Pran Chole, dying under the torrential rain of Moon's Spawn. Moon's Spawn crushes the Matron and forces the Seer into a corner before the floating mountain sinks into the sea.
Picker, Blend, Mallet, Antsy, Spindle, and Bluepearl receive their back pay and board a Trygalle Trade Guild carriage. The Seer embraces his young sister as they enter the newly healed ice warren guarded by an old witch.
