Introduction
You live in a culture that treats all spiritual views as valid while dismissing exclusive religious claims. Higher education teaches you that science disproves God and that faith is merely blind emotional comfort.
Atheism requires a greater degree of blind faith than Christianity because the philosophical, forensic, and scientific evidence strongly supports the existence of a theistic God and the divine authority of the Bible.
Norman L. Geisler and Frank Turek build a cumulative case using a twelve-point logical progression. You start by establishing absolute truth, move through the origin and design of the universe, examine morality and miracles, and finish with the historical reliability of the New Testament.
This journey answers crucial questions about your existence.
- Can you know truth in a postmodern world?
- How did the universe begin without a cause?
- Does DNA prove an intelligent designer?
- Are miracles actually possible?
- Can you trust the historical documents of the New Testament?
1. The Road Runner Tactic and Absolute Truth
Truth is defined as telling it like it is and corresponds to an actual state of affairs. This makes truth absolute and exclusive rather than relative.
Truth corresponds to reality and is absolute, and self-defeating claims that deny truth can be instantly refuted using the Road Runner tactic.
Truth exists independently of anyone's knowledge, beliefs, attitudes, or cultural background. All truth claims are narrow and exclusive because if something is true, its opposite is false. For example, 2+2=4 is a transcultural mathematical truth.
What is Truth?
People demand absolute truth in practical areas like banking, medicine, and aviation. They reject it in morality and religion to avoid being held accountable to moral standards.
A caller on a talk-radio program claimed that there is no such thing as truth, and postmodern university professors teach that all truth is relative.
Self-defeating statements, which fail to meet their own criteria, can be exposed and refuted using the Road Runner tactic. By turning a self-defeating statement back onto itself, such as asking if the claim there is no truth is itself true, you reveal its logical impossibility and internal contradiction.
You can apply this tactic using these steps:
- Identify the claim being made by an opponent.
- Apply the statement's own standard directly to the statement itself.
- Expose the internal contradiction to show that the statement is false.
Can Truth Be Known?
Absolute truth can be known. Skepticism claiming that nothing can be known for sure is self-defeating. An ordinary agnostic claims they do not know whether God exists, while an ornery agnostic claims no one can know anything for sure.
Norm Geisler engaged a man named Don at his door using Evangelism Explosion techniques. He moved him from identifying as an atheist to an agnostic, and eventually led him to examine evidence and accept Christianity.
Classical logic is universally built into the nature of reality and cannot be replaced by a distinct Eastern logic of both-and. Relativists sometimes argue that Eastern logic uses a both-and framework instead of Western either-or logic. This assertion is self-defeating because even the claim that one must use both-and logic in the East relies on either-or distinctions to be understood.
Logic applies to all people equally regardless of country, just as gravity affects everyone. In India, just like in the United States, people look both ways before crossing the street because it is either you or the bus, not both.
The Law of Noncontradiction is a self-evident first principle stating that contradictory claims cannot both be true at the same time in the same sense. This foundational principle governs all factual investigations, including questions about God and religion.
A medieval Muslim philosopher named Avicenna suggested that anyone who denies the Law of Noncontradiction should be beaten and burned until he admits that opposites are not identical.
Can All Religions Be True?
All major world religions cannot be true because they teach mutually exclusive opposites on essential matters. While religions share superficial moral agreements, they fundamentally disagree on the nature of God, man, sin, salvation, heaven, hell, and creation.
A student attending a church in Bowling Green heard a pastor claim all religious beliefs are true. When the student whispered that the pastor was going to hell, the pastor immediately retracted his claim.
Modern cultural tolerance redefines the concept to mean accepting every religious belief as true, which is itself logically flawed and intolerant. The modern pluralistic prohibition against judging or questioning religious beliefs is an absolute moral position that fails its own standard and excludes non-pluralistic views.
2. Scientific Evidence for the Beginning of the Universe
The origin of the universe out of nothing demands a powerful, intelligent, and uncaused First Cause outside of space and time.
The Cosmological Argument posits that whatever had a beginning must have a cause. Because science proves the universe had a beginning, the universe must have a cause.
To deny the Law of Causality is to deny rationality and the foundation of all scientific inquiry.
SURGE: Five Lines of Scientific Evidence
Modern physics confirms an absolute beginning through five converging lines of evidence known by the acronym SURGE.
- Second Law of Thermodynamics shows usable energy is constantly decreasing and entropy is increasing.
- Universe is expanding, which leads logically back to a single point.
- Radiation from the Big Bang provides the cooled light and heat from the primordial explosion.
- Great galaxy seeds reveal precise temperature ripples that allowed matter to congregate.
- Einstein's General Relativity mathematically demands an absolute beginning for time, space, and matter.
A materialist physics professor on an Ivy League campus admitted his belief that matter was eternal. When asked about the Second Law, he claimed that every law has an exception and his belief in materialism was based on faith in magic.
Arthur Eddington characterized the Second Law more than eighty years ago as the supreme metaphysical law of the entire universe.
In 1913, Vesto Melvin Slipher investigated the expanding universe. Edwin Hubble observed the expansion in 1927.
Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson detected radiation in 1965. Three scientists predicted the radiation would exist in 1948. Nearly twenty years passed between prediction and accidental discovery.
Penzias and Wilson initially suspected the mysterious noise on their antenna was caused by bird droppings from nesting pigeons before confirming it was cosmic background radiation.
NASA launched COBE in 1989 at a cost of $200 million. COBE findings were announced in 1992.
The ripples showed an exactness of one part in one hundred thousand. The biggest structures span 10 billion light years, or 60 billion trillion miles.
Albert Einstein calculated General Relativity in 1916. General Relativity is proven to an accuracy of five decimal places. Arthur Eddington confirmed relativity during a solar eclipse in 1919.
Alexander Friedmann exposed the algebraic error in 1922. Einstein visited Mount Wilson in 1929.
The Kalam Cosmological Argument
The Kalam Cosmological Argument proves through philosophical logic that time must have had a beginning because an actual infinite number of days cannot be traversed. History is a concrete collection of past days ending with today.
Because the First Cause created time, space, and matter out of nothing, it must possess specific characteristics.
- Self-existent
- Timeless
- Non-spatial
- Immaterial
- Unimaginably powerful
- Supremely intelligent
- Personal
3. Divine Design and the Anthropic Principle
The extreme fine-tuning of the cosmos and the specified complexity of DNA prove the existence of an intentional Designer.
The Teleological Argument states that every design has a designer. Because the universe exhibits complex and precise design, it must have a Designer. You can understand this through common sense. William Paley illustrated this with the commonsense assertion that finding a diamond-studded Rolex in the woods immediately leads anyone to conclude it was made by an intelligent being rather than natural erosion.
Fine-Tuning Constants and Probability
The Anthropic Principle refers to the mounting scientific evidence that the universe is extremely fine-tuned specifically to support human life on earth. Anthropic constants are the precise, interdependent environmental and physical conditions necessary for life. They act much like the narrow operational parameters of a spaceship carrying astronauts through a hostile vacuum.
The Apollo 13 mission illustrates how fragile life-support systems are and how a minor physical flaw can threaten total catastrophic failure. On April 13, 1970, an oxygen tank exploded due to a prior two-inch drop before installation. The accident occurred while the spacecraft traveled at 2,000 miles an hour, some 200,000 nautical miles from earth. It cut off power, water, and oxygen production while raising carbon dioxide levels.
NASA engineers and astronauts executed a workaround using cardboard, space-suit hoses, stowage bags, and duct tape to fit square Command Module carbon dioxide filters into round Lunar Module holes. They managed a safe splashdown at 1:07 P.M. EST on April 17, 1970, within the required reentry angle window of 5.5 to 7.3 degrees below the earth's horizon. This crisis mirrors how a small change in cosmic constants would destroy life on earth.
Astrophysicist calculations show that the probability of all life-supporting constants occurring by chance across the universe is virtually zero. Hugh Ross calculated that the chance of 122 specific anthropic constants existing by chance on any planet is one in 10 to the 138th power. Meanwhile, the total number of atoms in the universe is only 10 to the 70th power, and the estimated number of planets is 10 to the 22nd power. Specific constants include oxygen levels at 21 percent, atmospheric transparency, Jupiter acting as a cosmic vacuum cleaner, and the earth's 23-degree axial tilt.
Origin of Life and Information
The genetic code within the DNA of even a simple one-celled organism contains an enormous volume of specified information that cannot be produced by mindless natural forces. DNA has a helical structure formed by nucleotide bases known by the letters A, T, C, and G. These form a four-letter genetic alphabet that communicates a specific message or specified complexity. Natural forces have never been observed to create a message, making an intelligent cause the only logical explanation.
Richard Dawkins noted that the DNA inside the nucleus of a tiny amoeba contains more information than thirty volumes of the Encyclopedia Britannica combined. The entire amoeba has as much information as 1,000 complete sets of the Encyclopedia Britannica. James Watson and Francis Crick discovered DNA in 1953.
Because the origin of the first life is an unrepeatable historical event, investigators must use the Principle of Uniformity from forensic science to determine its cause. Forensic science assumes that causes in the past were like the causes observed today. Johnny finds messages such as "TAKE OUT THE GARBAGE—MOM" on a cereal box, "Mary loves Scott" written in the sand, and "Drink Coke" spelled out in cloud formations. Just as these messages and sculptures like Mount Rushmore require an intelligent being because natural laws never produce such things, the specified complexity of the first life demands an intelligent creator.
The spontaneous generation of life from nonliving chemicals has never been observed. Darwinian theories about the origin of life rest on blind faith rather than empirical science. Since Louis Pasteur disproved spontaneous generation, science has shown that life only comes from existing life. Even with intelligent intervention, modern scientists cannot create a DNA molecule in a laboratory. Biochemist Klaus Dose reviewed thirty years of research into the origin of life without finding a natural mechanism. Fred Hoyle invented the theory of panspermia after calculating that the probability of life arising by spontaneous generation was effectively zero.
Darwinists commit to philosophical materialism a priori, ruling out divine or intelligent causes so that they never allow a divine foot in the door. Prominent scientists like Richard Lewontin openly admit that they accept counterintuitive and absurd scientific claims because of an absolute commitment to material explanations. They tolerate unsubstantiated just-so stories because of a prior commitment to absolute materialism, ensuring that science excludes any non-natural conclusion regardless of evidence.
4. Biological Limits and Intelligent Design
Darwinists frequently conflate microevolution with macroevolution to mislead you. Microevolution refers to observable and limited changes within a type. Macroevolution claims that all life descended from a single cell through blind natural processes, a claim lacking observational proof.
Macroevolution fails because natural selection hits rigid genetic barriers, and biological systems exhibit irreducible complexity.
Natural selection only ensures that the fittest survive based on existing genetic traits. Surviving bacteria always remain bacteria and never transform into another type of organism.
Bacteria attacked by antibiotics survive because parent bacteria possessed the genetic capacity to resist or experienced a rare biochemical mutation. The survivors multiply and still remain bacteria.
Natural selection is incapable of producing new life forms due to five insurmountable biological and genetic barriers:
- Genetic Limits
- Cyclical Change
- Irreducible Complexity
- Non-viability of Transitional Forms
- Molecular Isolation
Dog breeders and scientists working with fruit flies encounter strict genetic limits where dogs always remain dogs and fruit flies always remain fruit flies.
Irreducible Complexity and the Fossil Record
Many biological systems and molecular machines are irreducibly complex. All interacting parts must be fully formed simultaneously for the system to function.
Michael Behe demonstrated that life at the molecular level contains systems where removing any single part causes the system to cease functioning. Because intermediate steps would lack functionality and organisms cannot survive without vital organs working during gradual transitions, gradual Darwinian evolution is impossible.
Michael Behe used a traditional mousetrap with five parts as an illustration. Car engines and cellular components like blood clotting and vision operate on the same principle.
The fossil record exhibits stasis and the sudden appearance of fully formed animal groups rather than gradual transitions. Stephen Jay Gould and other paleontologists noted that fossil species show no directional change during their tenure and appear all at once fully formed, a phenomenon known as the Cambrian explosion. This complete lack of a transitional chain makes the fossil record line up better with supernatural creation than with macroevolution.
Intelligent Design is a legitimate forensic science because it investigates past causes by detecting specified complexity, which is empirically observable. Like archaeology, cryptography, and criminal investigations, Intelligent Design evaluates whether an effect resulted from intelligent or non-intelligent causes.
In the movie Contact, Jodie Foster's character recognizes that a sequence of prime numbers in radio waves proves the existence of intelligent life. This illustrates that intelligence is detectable.
Evaluate the uniqueness of human nature and the concept of personhood based on intellect, free will, ethical responsibility, moral accountability, and inalienable rights.
5. The Moral Argument for a Transcendent Law Giver
Human beings possess a deep-seated sense of obligation to do good and shun evil. Because every prescription requires a prescriber, the Moral Law written on human hearts implies a transcendent Moral Law Giver.
The existence of an objective Moral Law points directly to a Moral Law Giver.
You can outline this argument formally:
- Every law has a law giver.
- There is a Moral Law.
- Therefore, there is a Moral Law Giver.
The author discussed religion with a successful businessman friend, Dave, who insisted truth is relative and claimed his purpose in life was making money and helping people. He failed to recognize that helping people implies an objective moral obligation outside himself.
How Do We Know the Moral Law Exists
Absolute moral values are practically undeniable. Even those who verbally deny them actively value their right to make that denial.
During a speech to affluent suburbanites in Chicago, when the author suggested objective moral values exist, a woman stood and protested that it is all a matter of taste or opinion. She thereby assumed her own absolute right to express dissent.
Relativism is unlivable and contradicted by common sense and emotional reactions. An atheist student at a major Indiana university wrote a paper arguing that all morals are relative and a matter of opinion. The professor gave the paper an F with the note, "I don't like blue folders!" When the enraged student protested the injustice, the professor exposed the contradiction by asking how an atheist could complain about fairness if all justice is merely subjective taste.
Universal human rights and the ability to recognize injustice rely entirely on the existence of an unchanging, transcendent Moral Law. C. S. Lewis noted that he could not call the universe unjust unless he had an unchanging idea of a straight line, or true justice, to compare it against. Nazi war criminals were convicted at Nuremberg for violating basic human rights defined by the Moral Law.
Absolute vs. Relative Morals
We can only measure moral progress or differentiate between moral extremes like Mother Teresa and Hitler by appealing to a real, unchanging standard of rightness. During a September 2000 public debate, agnostic Alan Dershowitz stated he knew what was wrong like the Holocaust, but claimed he did not know what was right. He committed a self-defeating error because you cannot identify a negation without an underlying affirmation.
Apparent moral disagreements across cultures or situations do not disprove absolute morals. They usually stem from confusion over changing behavior, factual perceptions, or relative means. In the late 1700s, witches were sentenced as murderers because society had a different factual perception of whether curses could kill, but the underlying moral value that murder is wrong remained completely unchanged.
Darwinian explanations of morality fail because material evolutionary processes cannot generate immaterial moral laws or justify why anyone should obey biological sentiments. Evolutionary theorists like Edward O. Wilson claim morality evolved through natural selection to aid survival. However, Darwinism cannot account for immaterial entities like moral laws and relies on circular reasoning by smuggling in an objective standard of good and survival. Adolf Hitler used Darwin's theory of natural selection and survival of the fittest in his 1924 publication of Mein Kampf as philosophical justification for racism and the Holocaust.
6. Miracles as the Seal of God
Natural revelation proves God exists with specific characteristics without using the Bible. The cosmological argument shows God is self-existent, timeless, non-spatial, immaterial, infinitely powerful, and personal. The teleological argument shows He is supremely intelligent and purposeful. The moral argument shows He is absolutely morally pure, embodying infinite justice and love.
A theistic God who created the universe can intervene through miracles to authenticate His messengers and written revelation.
The Possibility and Criteria of Miracles
God communicates through a written book authenticated by miracles, acting like a king's seal to verify the message. Because God cannot override human free will with overpowering face-to-face interactions, He uses precise written language. To show which book or messenger speaks for Him, He uses miracles as an unusual, easily recognizable seal that only God can perform.
The physical universe is an open box created by God, meaning God can intervene and perform miracles. Rejecting the closed naturalistic worldview, the author illustrates that just as a creator can reach into a box to manipulate its contents, a theistic God can reach into the physical universe to perform miracles. Since the greatest miracle of creation already occurred, all other biblical miracles are possible.
Ronald Nash used two cardboard boxes, one open and one closed, to demonstrate the difference between theism and atheism to Russian educators.
True miracles possess specific criteria reflecting God's attributes, distinguishing them from other unusual events. You can evaluate claims by following these rules:
- Check for an instantaneous beginning of a powerful act that cannot be explained naturally.
- Check for intelligent design and purpose aimed at confirming truth or bringing glory to God.
- Check for the promotion of good or right behavior aligned with moral purity.
Biblical miracles are not distributed evenly throughout history but are clustered during specific windows to confirm new revelation. Out of roughly 250 occasions of miracles recorded in the Bible, most occur during the lifetimes of Moses, Elijah and Elisha, and Jesus and the apostles, because those were times when God was confirming new truth and new messengers.
Refuting Skeptical Objections
Spinoza's objection that natural laws are immutable and render miracles impossible begs the question by ruling out God in advance. Natural laws are descriptions of regular occurrences and forces, not prescriptions that must happen. Finite beings can overpower natural forces daily, so the infinite Being who created those forces can certainly do so.
A baseball player catches a falling ball, thus overpowering the force of gravity.
David Hume's argument against miracles relies on a false premise that the evidence for the regular is always greater than that for the rare. Hume's argument fails because multiple rare, unrepeatable events like the origin of the universe, the origin of life, and personal birth are accepted by naturalists themselves. Furthermore, Hume confuses probability with evidence and argues in a circle by presupposing that human experience is uniformly against miracles.
David Hume's own birth happened only once, yet he easily believed it occurred.
7. Historical Reliability of the New Testament
The New Testament documents are early, historically accurate, and supported by massive manuscript evidence and eyewitness testimony.
Textual Transmission and Early Dating
You can evaluate the New Testament through its sheer manuscript abundance. There are 5,700 handwritten Greek manuscripts and 9,000 manuscripts in other languages. Homer's Iliad has only 643 manuscripts by comparison.
The John Rylands fragment of John's Gospel dates between AD 117-138 and was found in Egypt. Codex Vaticanus, containing the entire New Testament and Greek Old Testament, survives from about AD 325.
You will find that the New Testament documents were written before AD 70 because they lack any mention of the catastrophic destruction of Jerusalem and the temple. Like a modern book about the World Trade Center that fails to mention the events of September 11, any extensive historical account written after AD 70 would surely record the destruction of the Jewish temple.
First Corinthians 15 contains an extremely early creed detailing the resurrection of Christ that dates back to within a few years of the event itself. Paul wrote his first letter to the Corinthians around AD 55-56, citing over 500 brethren who saw the risen Christ at one time.
Eyewitness Evidence and the Principle of Embarrassment
Ten known non-Christian writers mention Jesus within 150 years of his life. For example, the Jewish historian Flavius Josephus recorded in Antiquities of the Jews about Jesus being a wise man, crucified by Pilate, and reported by his disciples to be alive three days later.
You can verify Luke through Colin Hemer, who identified 84 facts in the final 16 chapters of Acts regarding local places, customs, and environmental conditions that were later confirmed by archaeological findings. Similarly, Craig Blomberg identified nearly 60 historically confirmed or historically probable eyewitness points in John's Gospel.
Authors do not invent stories that make themselves look foolish. The principle of embarrassment reveals uninvented details:
- Peter is called Satan by Jesus and rebuked by Paul for theological error;
- all disciples except John hide during the crucifixion while brave women discover the empty tomb;
- Mary Magdalene and other women are recorded as the first discoverers of the empty tomb;
- over 10,000 Jews followed Jesus five weeks after his crucifixion;
- 1,500-year-old-plus institutions were given up by early believers;
- eleven out of the twelve apostles were martyred for their faith.
