Introduction

You face a world where institutions decay and social order erodes around you. The Galactic Empire stands on the brink of an inevitable dark age lasting thirty thousand years. You discover that history follows large-scale social laws that you can calculate and predict mathematically. Hari Seldon develops the science of psychohistory to shorten this catastrophic gap to a single millennium. You must navigate political intrigue, demagogues, and personal loss to secure the survival of human knowledge.

Hari Seldon struggles against political corruption and urban decay to perfect psychohistory and establish the twin Foundations that will preserve human civilization.

The book traces five distinct periods of Seldon's life across the following questions:

  • How do you neutralize a populist demagogue using applied psychohistory?
  • What happens when subversives weaponize urban decay for political assassinations?
  • How does a small research project expand into a large government-funded institution?
  • In what ways do rare mentalic abilities reshape the long-term imperial plan?
  • How do you secure the implementation of a plan in your final days?

1. Psychohistory and the Joranumite Crisis

Hari Seldon struggles to perfect the revolutionary science of psychohistory to ensure human survival. Faced with the inevitable destruction of the crumbling Galactic Empire, you must work to establish the Foundation as a means to preserve human civilization from galaxy-wide havoc.

Applied psychohistory and robot actions require the principle of minimalism to avoid uncontrollable, chaotic consequences.

Any intervention must be as minute as possible because larger changes introduce a myriad of unpredictable side effects that lead away from the desired outcome. The required minimum might be close to zero, making it a major challenge to find a change small enough to remain predictable yet large enough to be effective.

The Rise of Joranum

Demagogues exploit popular grievances by championing social justice as a stepping-stone to absolute power. At 40, Hari Seldon faces a massive political crisis driven by 42-year-old Laskin Joranum.

Laskin Joranum uses the slogan "Government is the people" and promotes sector equality to rally the oppressed population of Trantor, particularly in the Dahl Sector, intending to oust the First Minister, manipulate the Emperor, and take the throne himself.

Joranum changed his name from Laskin using the first syllable of his last name to create the hypnotic chant "Jo... Jo... Jo...", and his right-hand man Gambol Deen Namarti organizes unauthorized rallies on the Streeling University campus.

Unmasking the Demagogue

Political figures may fabricate their origins to hide backgrounds that expose them to public ridicule or bigotry. Joranum pretends to come from the insignificant pastoral world of Nishaya to appeal to the masses with homespun philosophy, hiding the fact that he is actually a puritanical Mycogenian Breakaway who uses artificial hair to conceal his native baldness.

Hari Seldon uncovers Joranum's true background by noticing his artificial hair and realizing his folktales and linguistic nuances do not match the genuine culture of Nishaya.

To counter this threat, Hari Seldon sends his foster son Raych into the Dahl Sector because Raych's Dahlite background and personal charisma allow him to approach Joranum and plant the critical idea that First Minister Demerzel is actually a robot. At 20, Raych draws upon the 8 years he and Seldon have spent on Trantor since leaving Dahl.

Raych visits Billibotton, defeats local thugs in a fight, gains access to Joranum, and convinces him that Demerzel is a non-human machine, giving Joranum a fatal line of propaganda.

Seldon's Ascent

Eto Demerzel is revealed to be R. Daneel Olivaw, an immortal humanoid robot from Aurora who serves as the Emperor's First Minister to protect humanity as a whole, though he is constrained by the Laws of Robotics from causing direct harm even to political enemies.

Demerzel guides Emperor Cleon I through 18 years on the throne before neutralizing the robot accusation by giving a subetheric holovision address where he simply laughs at the rumor, destroying the notion that he is a cold, unemotional machine.

A scholar without political ambitions can be forced into supreme administrative power during systemic crises. Following the political destruction of Joranum through religious denunciation and exposure, Demerzel retires from office, and Emperor Cleon I appoints Hari Seldon as the new First Minister of the Galactic Empire across its 25,000,000 worlds.

Cleon forces Seldon into the position because the Emperor believes Seldon successfully resolved the crisis using the predictive powers of psychohistory.

2. Conspiracies and Political Upheaval

Subversives weaponize urban decay and manipulate security blind spots to trigger catastrophic political assassinations.

Infrastructural Disruption

Conspirators can weaponize urban decay by deliberately triggering failures in basic city services to generate widespread public dissatisfaction. You see this when subversives make the ruling administration appear incompetent and hateful without needing a massive army.

Namarti and his network orchestrated a series of infrastructure failures across Trantor to make the public blame First Minister Hari Seldon.

Developing psychohistory reveals a grim choice between the collapse of the imperial center and the secession of the outer peripheries. Seldon and Yugo Amaryl discover through mathematical modeling that preserving Trantor's stability requires letting the Outer Worlds break away. Both cannot be kept intact without crashing the whole empire.

Seldon and Amaryl analyze the Prime Radiant projections and conclude that the Galactic Empire is overheated and heading toward an inevitable fall.

The Tragedies of Power

Chemical agents can induce a state of absolute hopelessness that bends a subject's will to complete assigned tasks. Illegal drugs such as desperance chemically modify tranquilizers to produce deep despair. This breaks your resistance and makes you compliant under threats of physical pain.

Glebs Andorin administered desperance to Raych Seldon through his meals to force him to participate in an assassination attempt against his foster father.

Complex security systems often maintain blind spots by allowing massive unvetted influxes of labor during routine administrative turnovers. Even heavily guarded zones like the Imperial Palace grounds must periodically replace aging manual laborers. This creates a window for conspirators to slip operatives past perimeter defenses across the 500 square kilometers of the Imperial grounds and parklands.

When a new Chief Gardener is appointed, hundreds of new gardeners are brought in from different worlds, allowing Namarti to insert operatives carrying blasters.

Major historical turning points can be triggered by trivial personal motives entirely disconnected from grand political ideologies. While political factions orchestrate complex coups for power, individual actors within those systems may commit catastrophic acts simply to escape unwanted administrative promotions.

Mandell Gruber assassinated Emperor Cleon I with a blaster simply because he wanted to remain an ordinary gardener and avoid the paperwork of becoming Chief Gardener after 30 years of Mandell Gruber's service as a gardener on a world with a population of 40 billion under the dome.

3. The Seldon Psychohistory Project

As the psychohistory project expands into a large government-funded institution, new mathematical innovations and personal betrayals emerge.

Originally a private collaboration between Hari Seldon and Yugo Amaryl, the project expanded during Seldon's ten-year tenure as First Minister and continued to grow upon his return to Streeling University. Funding was provided by the military junta who viewed the project as a potential political weapon. You can see how thirty years passed since Seldon started working on psychohistory in his early thirties.

Seldon reflected on how the project grew from just himself and Amaryl working without even a Prime Radiant to a large institution with numerous mathematicians and nonmathematicians.

Mathematical Innovations

Senior mathematician Tamwile Elar introduced new equations that helped navigate around the problem of chaos. Nonmathematician Cinda Monay designed the Electro-Clarifier to squeeze more material into the lines and curves of the future.

Yugo Amaryl tested the new equations against various disruptions and began calling them the achaotic equations before discussing them with Seldon.

Yugo Amaryl and Hari Seldon analyzed personal frictions within the project using mathematical equations. They discovered that interpersonal problems cannot be totally eliminated within a closed group.

When Amaryl modified equations to indicate a reduction in social friction, a reduction in one place always resulted in a proportional increase elsewhere. This demonstrated the law of conservation of personal problems.

Seldon advised General Tennar that efforts to make taxation perfectly fair result in excessive complexity, high administrative costs, and public frustration. Opportunists then exploit this tax overgrowth to fuel rebellion.

Seldon deliberately discussed the dangers of complex tax overgrowth with General Tennar. He predicted it would lead to a poll tax announcement and subsequent public riots.

Betrayal at the Palace

Throughout their twenty-eight years together, Dors Venabili possessed legendary speed and strength, whispered about as The Tiger Woman. Tamwile Elar deduced her true robotic nature because she was uniquely vulnerable to an intense electromagnetic field produced by an advanced Electro-Clarifier. Her superhuman physical attributes and immunity to ordinary aging stemmed from her true nature as a humanoid robot created to protect Seldon.

Dors infiltrated the Palace grounds alone, easily overpowering armed guards. She ultimately suffered fatal damage when Elar turned the intensified clarifier against her.

Collaborating secretly with the military junta, thirty-six-year-old Tamwile Elar attempted to remove Seldon. He utilized an intensified version of the Electro-Clarifier to disable and destroy Dors Venabili, who threatened his conspiracy.

Elar confessed his plans to Dors while using the intensified clarifier against her, before Dors overcame the device and killed him with a blow to the neck.

4. The Emergence of Mentalics

A rare innate mental ability to read and influence human minds can unexpectedly emerge within families.

Wanda Seldon, Hari's granddaughter, accidentally displays the ability to read minds when she perceives an error in Yugo Amaryl's mathematical equations on the Prime Radiant. Subsequent genetic analysis reveals standard imperfect genes without explicit markers for brain function anomalies, but the mentalic trait proves real and potent.

Wanda senses a flaw in Section 428254 of the Prime Radiant equations while visiting Yugo Amaryl and later saves Hari from an attack by sensing danger and alerting Raych.

The Two Foundations

The psychohistorical plan expands into two separate foundations to preserve human knowledge and safely guide the future.

While the first foundation consists of physical scientists preserving human knowledge on a remote world, a second foundation comprised of mentalist psychohistorians will operate behind the scenes to make fine adjustments and guard the social order.

On his deathbed, Yugo Amaryl approves of Seldon's vision to establish a second foundation made entirely of mind-touching psychohistorians. Yugo Amaryl dies at age fifty-five after refusing to live sensibly or take time off for rest, leaving Seldon grief-stricken.

With the assistance of the Galactic Library, Seldon locates a habitable, unoccupied planet lying fifty light-years outside the province of Anacreon, far from imperial political control, named Terminus. Chief Librarian Las Zenow presents the coordinates of Terminus to Hari Seldon, noting that it was explored only by unmanned probes due to its extreme distance.

As the Galactic Empire decays, its capital world suffers from rising crime, failing infrastructure, and growing public hostility toward intellectuals. Trantor experiences severe economic decline, shrinking security forces, and a rise in mysticism. Citizens begin to blame Hari Seldon and psychohistory for predicting and causing the doom of the Empire.

A group of young thugs attacks Hari Seldon on the walkways of Trantor simply because he is identified as Raven Seldon, the prophet of psychohistory.

The central imperial government loses its ability to collect taxes or enforce control over outlying provinces. Emperor Agis XIV explains that half the provinces pay no taxes and remain part of the Empire in name only, leaving the imperial treasury in a chronic deficit and forcing the palace itself to decay.

Emperor Agis XIV admits to Hari Seldon that he has no credits to spare for the Galactic Library and lacks the authority to command compliance from independent provincial governors.

Deteriorating living conditions on the capital drive citizens to seek refuge in stable provincial universities. Tired of the violence and decay on Trantor, Raych accepts a teaching position at a university on the distant provincial world of Santanni and urges his family and Hari to relocate.

Raych defends Hari from street thugs using his traditional Dahlite knives and subsequently announces his plan to move Manella, Wanda, Bellis, and Hari to Santanni, located nine thousand parsecs away from Trantor.

5. Legacy and the Seldon Plan

Certain individuals possess mentalic abilities that allow them to read and influence the thoughts of others, referred to as pushing. Wanda Seldon discovers that she can sense people's thoughts and push them to alter their decisions over time, though her power has limits against determined minds like street muggers. Stettin Palver and Bor Alurin are later discovered to share similar latent mentalic abilities, and when mentalics combine their powers, their capacity to influence others increases exponentially.

A secret second foundation composed of mentalics must protect the physical Foundation.

Wanda and Stettin Palver successfully push fourteen-year-old Rial Nevas during a court hearing to break down in tears and tell the truth about the fabricated assault charges against Seldon.

To ensure the survival of civilization, Seldon conceptualizes a second, secret Foundation composed entirely of mentalics acting as guardians for the physical Foundation. Realizing that psychohistory needs a fail-safe measure, Seldon determines that while the first Foundation on Terminus consists of physical scientists and encyclopedists, the Second Foundation must consist of mentalic psychologists who can quietly protect the Plan from its enemies. Wanda Seldon and Stettin Palver are chosen as the pioneering nucleus of this secret organization, instructed to seclude themselves and cast their mental nets to gather more mentalics.

Hari Seldon reveals to Wanda and Stettin Palver that Section 33A2D17 of the Prime Radiant and the concept of yin and yang require a dual structure where the mentalic Second Foundation secretly guards the Terminus Foundation.

The Final Hours

The collapse of the Empire causes violent upheavals on the Outer Worlds, resulting in the tragic loss of Hari Seldon's son Raych and the displacement of his family. As rebellions erupt on Santanni due to Imperial neglect and budget cutbacks, Raych stays behind to guard Streeling University while sending Manella and little Bellis away on the hypership Arcadia VII, which subsequently vanishes. Raych ultimately dies during a bombardment on Santanni University while defending knowledge against revolutionary destruction.

Emperor Agis XIV informs Hari Seldon that Raych was killed in a bombardment on Santanni University after refusing to desert his post, while the ship Arcadia VII carrying Manella and Bellis has completely disappeared.

In his final days, Hari Seldon questions whether his dedication to the grand sweep of psychohistory caused him to neglect personal relationships. Looking back over his eighty-one years, Seldon wonders if minor adjustments could have improved the lives of loved ones like Yugo, Raych, and Dors without compromising humanity's future.

Seldon sits alone in the empty offices of the Psychohistory Building, regretting the losses of his beloved Dors and wondering about the fates of good leaders like Agis.

Hari Seldon dies at his desk while working on psychohistorical equations, clutching his activated Prime Radiant. In accordance with his instructions, his body is jettisoned into space, and his instrument is shipped to Gaal Dornick on Terminus.

A simple memorial service is held on Trantor, attended by his old friend Eto Demerzel, who promptly disappears afterward.
