Introduction

You often rely solely on your rational mind and external authorities to make important life choices. This approach can leave you feeling stuck, exhausted, and disconnected from your own deep wisdom.

Intuition is a natural, practical faculty present in everyone rather than a mysterious psychic phenomenon reserved for a gifted few.

Shakti Gawain presents a clear method to develop this inner guidance. You will learn how to relax deeply, recognize subtle internal signals, and take practical steps based on your awareness. The book guides you through specific challenges, helping you move from mental strain to a balanced life.

You will discover answers to several key questions as you read:

  • What is intuition and how does it manifest in daily life?
  • How do you clear the blocks created by rational thinking and outside pressure?
  • What physical and mental techniques help you access inner guidance?
  • How can you interpret subtle messages and align your actions with your energy?

1. Understanding Intuition and Your Inner Guidance

Society often views intuition as a mysterious occurrence. In reality, it is a natural faculty present in all humans. You can use it as a practical tool rooted in a universal, intelligent life force.

Intuition is a practical inner knowing that operates on a spectrum from basic daily awareness to fully developed psychic ability.

The rational mind operates like a computer based on finite external inputs and past experiences. The intuitive mind accesses an infinite storehouse of wisdom and provides step-by-step guidance.

What Is Intuition?

Intuition exists on a spectrum ranging from undeveloped awareness to moment-to-moment guidance and fully developed psychic ability. Most people fall in the middle ground of the spectrum. You learn to access and trust daily intuitive nudges that provide just the information needed at the moment, rather than dramatic psychic phenomena.

You might experience this inner knowing as a gut feeling or a hunch. These subtle signals help you navigate daily decisions without relying solely on limited logic.

Recalling Past Hunches

Reflecting on past hunches helps you recognize how intuition manifests and whether you acted on it. You can perform a simple reflective exercise to identify physical or mental sensations associated with past gut feelings:

  • Get in a comfortable position, close your eyes and take a few slow, deep breaths.
  • See if you can remember a time when you had a strong hunch, a gut feeling, or a feeling of knowingness about something.
  • Consider how it came to you, how it felt, whether you followed it, and what happened as a result.
  • Write a little bit in your journal or a notebook about this experience if you want to.

2. Overcoming Obstacles to Awareness

Developing intuition requires catching the unconscious habit of immediately dismissing or contradicting inner promptings.

People frequently experience an intuitive yes or no, only for the rational mind to quickly overrule it with doubt, social concern, or fear of failure. Cultivating awareness stops this automatic rejection. Nine times out of ten, a friend knows who is calling before answering the phone.

A woman ignored her intuitive feeling that a candidate would not make a good partner for her husband's firm. The partner was hired and had to be let go within days.

Reviewing the day each evening trains the mind to notice missed intuitive signals and assess how they were handled. By treating the day like a movie review, individuals can spot energetic shifts, impulses, and moments where they ignored gut feelings without self-judgment.

You can perform an awareness exercise to review your day:

  • Sit or lie down in a comfortable position where you won't be disturbed.
  • Take a few slow, deep breaths and allow your body and mind to relax.
  • Think back to when you first woke up this morning, reviewing your feelings, thoughts, and significant events as if watching a movie.
  • Notice specifically if there was any time during the day when you might have had an intuitive feeling.
  • Remember how you handled it: did you pay attention or push it aside, and how did you feel afterward?

Trusting Your Inner Authority

Relying excessively on outside authorities causes people to disconnect from their own innate inner wisdom.

Culture, family, and educational systems train people to seek external validation and answers from experts, parents, or peers rather than listening to their internal truth. The inner teacher remains available once you stop looking outward for permission.

A workshop owner ignored her intuitive doubts and followed the advice of an MBA consultant, leading to unfortunate consequences. Another mother trusted her intuition that her daughter was in severe danger despite therapists and relatives claiming it was normal teenage behavior.

After one and a half years, the daughter was doing much better and far along the road to recovery. Two years marked the time the daughter has been drug free.

3. Accessing Intuition Through Relaxation and Meditation

Modern life keeps people in a state of chronic stress. Intentional breathing and relaxation techniques train the body and mind to quiet down quickly, opening the channel to intuitive guidance.

Physical and mental relaxation moves awareness into the body, allowing you to systematically pose questions and receive inner guidance.

Physical and mental relaxation is essential for moving awareness out of the head and down into the body where gut feelings reside. You can use the R ELAXATION E XERCISE to give yourself five to ten minutes of permission to relax deeply.

Follow these steps for the relaxation exercise:

  • Sit in an alert, upright position in a comfortable chair or lie down on your back with pillows for support.
  • Take a deep breath, exhale slowly, loosen shoulders, open your mouth wide, and yawn or pretend to yawn.
  • Relax the areas around your eyes, forehead, nose, mouth, and jaw while breathing slowly and easily.
  • Inhale slowly through your right nostril, hold for a moment, and exhale through your left nostril; then inhale through left and exhale through right for at least four full cycles.
  • Focus your attention on relaxing your feet, legs, buttocks, abdomen, arms and hands, upper back, chest, neck and shoulders, and head in turn with each breathing cycle.

Inner Guidance Meditation

A systematic meditative process allows individuals to descend into a quiet internal space and consciously pose questions to their intuition. Shakti Gawain has used and taught this meditation for twenty years. By focusing on the breath, shifting awareness from the head down into the belly or solar plexus, and asking an open question, individuals receive thoughts, feelings, or images that offer relevant inner guidance.

Workshop participants received various intuitive responses such as 'Have more fun!', an image of the word HEALTH, a feeling that 'Everything is okay,' 'Trust, not fear,' an image of a powerful brown bear, 'Love is the answer,' and an image of bowing to a warrior goddess representing the inner feminine.

Use the I NNER G UIDANCE M EDITATION to access this quiet internal space:

  • Find a quiet, peaceful place, sit or lie down with a straight, supported spine, and close your eyes.
  • Take three deep breaths, relaxing your body and mind progressively on each exhale.
  • Move your awareness out of your head and let it rest in the area of your solar plexus or belly.
  • Drop your awareness into a deep, quiet place within until you come to rest.
  • Ask yourself, 'What do I most need to remember or be aware of right now?' and rest quietly, being open to any thought, feeling, or image.

Regular short check-ins during a busy day help maintain connection with the present moment and intuitive awareness. Short pauses taken at a desk, in a car, or in a restroom allow a person to assess their mental and emotional state, notice inner stress, and briefly rest in self-connection.

A client driving to work got a flat tire, paused to listen to her inner guidance instead of immediately calling her husband, and was helped by a passing couple within minutes. The total time elapsed from flat tire to getting back on the road with help was twenty minutes.

Perform a Q UICK I NTUITIVE C HECK I N M EDITATION with these steps:

  • Close your eyes and take a deep breath, exhaling slowly.
  • Notice what is on your mind, how your body is feeling, and your emotional state.
  • Take another deep breath, exhale slowly, and let your awareness move into a deep place inside.
  • Check if there is any gut feeling or connection you need to pay attention to before carrying on.

4. Interpreting Messages and Following Your Energy

Interpreting subtle intuitive messages maintains the flow of your life force, while ignoring them leads to heaviness and struggle.

Interpreting Intuitive Messages

Acting on intuition requires courage and should be practiced first through small, non-disruptive daily choices rather than major life decisions. Intuition rarely provides a long-term master blueprint. Instead, it offers moment-to-moment nudges that unfold a path over time. Practicing with small everyday choices builds trust and creates a reliable internal reference point.

Postpone major life decisions during the initial learning stage and practice with small everyday choices instead. Quiet your mind and go inside when faced with a simple choice such as what to wear, route to drive, where to eat, or whether to call a friend. Choose based on your intuitive feeling rather than logical reasoning or what others feel.

The author fell in love with a property on Kauai and was devastated when another buyer made a cash offer, only to discover later that the house had major hidden problems and her intuition guided her to a better, more suitable home instead.

Interpreting intuition requires practice and a willingness to make mistakes and face uncertainty. Intuition rarely feels like a sure thing and often manifests as a subtle feeling, inner knowing, or energy rather than a loud voice. Acting on it brings a sense of being in the flow and synchronicity.

The author forgot to announce she was looking for an office assistant during a workshop, but a woman approached her outside and eventually became her business manager.

Allowing Your Life Force to Flow

Acting on intuitive promptings increases aliveness and energy, whereas going against them leads to a lack of energy, depression, and stress.

Make a practice of noticing how you feel and what happens to your energy when you follow your intuitive guidance and when you don't.

Following your own energy sustains your life force and empowers self-expression.

The personality structure contains multiple subpersonalities or selves, and intuition is one of these voices. Using the Voice Dialogue process helps identify primary selves that run life and disowned selves that make up the shadow side, allowing the development of an aware ego.

Sit in a comfortable position and close your eyes and become aware of any selves with you or voices in your head. Take several slow deep breaths and move attention out of your head down to your heart, solar plexus, or belly. Ask your wise intuitive self if it has any message and be receptive to whatever comes.

Writing with different colored pens for various inner voices helps resolve internal conflicts before accessing intuition. Assigning specific pen colors to different subpersonalities allows them to express opposing points of view clearly.

Get several pens with different colors of ink and a pad of paper or journal. Sit in a comfortable position, close your eyes, and get in touch with different voices. Choose one voice to express, pick up a matching pen, and let it write anything it wants to say. Choose another voice with a different colored pen and write what it wants to say until major voices have expressed themselves. Take deep breaths, move attention down into a deep place inside, and ask intuition if there is anything to be aware of.

Intuition is distinct from emotions, but emotional healing makes it easier to access intuitive feelings. Emotions are carried by specific emotional selves like the vulnerable or playful child, and denied emotions remain as blocked energy that hinders intuitive connection.

Put your attention in the middle of your body in the morning and evening to ask how you are feeling emotionally. Go into any anxious or upset feeling, give it a voice, and ask what it is feeling while being sympathetic and supportive.

The physical body acts as a powerful messenger and helper in experiencing and interpreting intuition. People experience intuition in the solar plexus, heart, hands, or through goose bumps, physical tension, or excitement.

A woman woke up with an uneasy feeling before a barbecue, and the feeling vanished immediately when she received a subpoena regarding an old debt from her ex-husband.

Make a note in your journal every time you experience an intuitive impulse or hunch through your body over a week. Sit or lie down, take deep breaths, feel supported by the earth, and ask your body what it would like to tell you and how you can help relieve concerns.

Following intuition in the workplace aids decision-making, improves interactions, and guides people toward fulfilling livelihood. Successful people rely on intuition, and synchronicity often follows when individuals take small intuitive steps in their careers.

A company's profits increased from $3 million to $33 million in one year after the chief operating officer insisted on being honest and open with the union against management's initial wishes.

Follow any impulses in the direction of your true work, play, or creative desires even if unrealistic. List fantasies around work, career, or creativity alongside action steps to explore them. Write an ideal scene describing your perfect job or career in the present tense. Cut out pictures or articles pertaining to your desires and collect them in an envelope or create a collage.

A specific meditation practice helps individuals rest in a quiet place inside and sense the life force within them. This practice involves physical relaxation, breathing deeply to release tension, resting in a quiet place, and imagining following one's own energy to feel true to oneself, empowered, and fully expressive of creativity.

Sit or lie down in a comfortable position. Close your eyes. Take a deep breath and relax your body. Take another deep breath and relax your mind. Continue to breathe slowly and deeply and let go of all tension or anxiety. Rest in a deep, quiet place inside with nothing you need to do or think about. Begin to sense the life force within you from this deep, quiet place. Imagine that you are following your own energy, feeling it, trusting it, moving with it in every moment of your life. Be completely true to yourself, speaking and living your truth, feeling alive and empowered. Imagine that you are expressing your creativity fully and freely, and let yourself enjoy the experience.
