Introduction

You live in a world where magic is missing, yet you might sense that reality extends far beyond what you can see. V. E. Schwab presents a multiverse split into four parallel cities that share the same space but differ in their relationship to power. You face a delicate balance between worlds that requires absolute separation to survive.

The central idea is that an Antari blood magician and a clever thief must stop a corrupted magical artifact from destroying all parallel Londons. You follow Kell and Lila as they cross dimensional boundaries to contain a parasitic magic that threatens to consume every London in existence.

The book explores how power corrupts isolated worlds and tests the limits of loyalty. You will discover the mechanics of blood magic and the dangers of uncontained power.

  • How do parallel versions of London communicate and remain separated?
  • What happens when a dead magical artifact enters a balanced world?
  • Can a thief and a magician trust each other across hostile dimensions?

1. The Four Londons

The universe contains four parallel worlds sharing the same geography, separated and categorized by colors according to their historical status with magic.

Kell names and categorizes the remaining cities inspired by the lost Black London. You use these color designations to keep the different capitals straight since they all share the name London.

Color Classifications

The universe consists of four distinct parallel worlds sharing the same geography, each anchored by a version of London:

  • Grey London
  • Red London
  • White London
  • Black London

Kell uses a book to demonstrate how the worlds are stacked like sheets of paper, requiring a traveler to move through them in exact order. The world outside individual cities is composed of vast empires and distinct regions rather than familiar modern nation-states. London serves as the capital of Arnes, while the island corresponding to England is called the raska, representing just the tip of a massive empire that includes Vesk to the north and Faro to the south. When Lila questions the absence of Paris and England on a map in Fletcher's shop, Kell explains the imperial geography of his world.

The Fall of Black London

Nearly three centuries ago, the four worlds were twined together and eventually sealed. Black London fell because its inhabitants allowed magic to consume their minds, turning them into destructive conduits until the world was sealed off.

The abundance of magic in Black London caused it to overthrow its hosts, acting as a plague that corrupted everything it touched and forcing the other three worlds to lock their doors. Kell recounts how the other cities sealed their sources and isolated themselves to prevent the magical plague from spreading, leaving Black London as a ghost story.

2. Antari and Magic Systems

Normal elemental magic requires a meditative chant and synchronicity with nature. You can cast spells through patience and focus, but blood commands operate as direct, literal orders. Blood does not obey elemental laws and acts as an equal or adversary.

Antari possess rare blood magic that grants them dominion over elements and dimensional barriers through spoken commands.

Blood Commands

Antari stand apart as unique and dangerous vessels. You rely on specific Antari blood commands linked to elemental and physical actions to manipulate reality. Healing spells require physical sacrifice like blood and sustained concentration to take effect.

  • As Athera to grow
  • As Pyrata to burn
  • As Illumae to light
  • As Travars to Travel
  • As Orense to open
  • As Anasae to dispel
  • As Hasari to heal

Kell uses a blood command to instantly dispel a wild, spreading fire during a magic lesson with Prince Rhy. To save Rhy from dying on the boat floor, Kell used blood commands and repeatedly invoked the healing spell while cutting his own wrists to revive him.

Crossing Worlds

Antari draw power from their blood, which runs true and red while their right eye is entirely solid black. You must use specific marked symbols on walls combined with personal blood and a token to open passages. Because traditional tokens were destroyed during ancient cleanses, you rely on specific objects like coins from a target world as keys to pierce the barrier.

  • Carve the precise passage symbol on a wall using a blade
  • Apply blood from the wound to the symbol
  • Press a matching token coin to the blood
  • Speak the transfer command word

Kell cuts his forearm with a monogrammed silver knife to redraw the passage symbol and uses a red lin coin to travel.

3. Red London and Grey London

Red London thrives on a balanced, glowing river of power while Grey London remains mundane and indifferent to the magical currents.

The Isle and Palace

The source of magical power in Red London is the river Isle, which physically manifests as a glowing crimson artery running through the palace and city. The royal palace, known as the Soner Rast or Beating Heart, arches over the river. The magic originates from blood and thrives along the constant ribbon of light that sustains the empire.

Pilgrims and locals flock to the Night Market along the riverbanks to lay flowers, buy magical wares, and bask in the thrum of power.

Thieves and Collectors

Magic-seekers in Grey London are split into wealthy uninterested Collectors and troublesome aspiring Enthusiasts. Collectors buy trinkets purely as luxury display pieces without understanding magic, whereas Enthusiasts attempt to practice spells and seek magical items for personal use, which borders on treason.

An awkward Enthusiast named Ned Tuttle approaches Kell in a tavern asking for foreign earth to tap into its power.

Lila Bard lives by the philosophy that taking what is worth having is the path to freedom. Lila survives in Grey London by picking pockets and stealing from wealthy targets, viewing danger as a thrill and rejecting the perceived weakness of conventional women.

Lila steals a silver pocket watch from a gentleman in Eaton and later encounters a constable while wearing a stolen top hat and disguise.

Lila Bard survives as an ambitious thief in Grey London while dreaming of becoming a pirate captain at nineteen years old. Lila steals from the wealthy to build her fortune, carefully studying pirate books, carrying weapons including her pistol Caster and knives, and maintaining her independence while operating out of the Stone's Throw tavern.

Lila gives a few coppers to a ragged boy before tracking down his bullies, and later inadvertently picks the pocket of a bleeding Kell at half past nine.

4. White London and the Dane Dynasty

White London treats magic as an oppressive force to be conquered, ruled through absolute terror and physical mutilation by the Dane twins.

Unlike Red London, which views magic as a balanced resource, White London treats magic as an oppressive force to be conquered and dominated. Because the people of White London attempt to forcibly control and bind magic, the magic resists and starves the city of life, leaching away color and warmth. Residents use heavy iron coins, amulets, and brutal self-inflicted scarring and brands in a desperate attempt to hold onto dwindling power.

The Sijlt river is half-frozen, and citizens walk around gaunt and covered in mutilations and brands designed to bind magic to their bodies.

Power in Dominance

King Athos and Queen Astrid maintain control by stripping away the free will of guards and subjects through dark binding spells and horrific physical punishments for the slightest defiance, ruling from a grim fortress. Seven years ago, the last king was killed and the Danes took power.

Athos tortures a sixteen-year-old boy named Beloc with a silver whip and carves a binding spell into his chest with an inked knife for failing to bow.

Holland's Servitude

Despite being an Antari who once vied for the throne, Holland was defeated by the Danes seven years ago and forced to wear a magical silver circular brooch that compels him to obey their commands without robbing him of his awareness of his own suffering. Holland reveals that the metal ring he wears is not what binds him to the White throne; rather, it is a soul seal burned through his flesh and heart by the rulers of his world, which is periodically reapplied to ensure obedience.

Athos forces Holland to slice open his arm and bleed into a goblet of wine to serve guests while the king mocks his pain. Holland pulls aside his collar to show Kell the silvery, scorched brand over his heart that signifies his permanent subjugation.

Resourceful street thieves rely on hidden weaponry, tactical observation, and physical endurance to survive unexpected magical threats. Lila carries multiple daggers, a revolver, and uses stealth or blunt force when confronted with enemies. When trapped or bound by magical wood, she spends an hour cutting and sawing herself free rather than waiting for rescue.

Lila hacks herself free from a wooden cuff grown into the wall by Kell, ruining her knife blade in the process. Her revolver holds six shots total capacity, with one fired and five remaining.

When you need to survive dangerous encounters, you can apply tactical street habits:

  • Hide multiple weapons across your person, including sleeves, back sheaths, and boots.
  • Use a heavy blunt object to strike an unsuspecting opponent when cornered.

5. The Vitari Stone

The parcel contains the Vitari, a forbidden black stone inscribed with the ancient Black London rune for magic. The stone vibrates and amplifies magic, operating independently to interpret the wielder's will and create physical manifestations like freezing an attacker in time, defying the golden rule that magic cannot be created out of nothing.

The recovered talisman from Black London operates as a source of bad, dead magic that amplifies power and creates physical objects from smoke.

When royal guards ambush Kell in Red London, the stone unleashes thick black smoke that instantly freezes one of the attackers mid-stride.

The Black Talisman

The stolen talisman operates as a source of bad, dead magic that allows users to create physical objects, illusions, or duplicates out of black smoke. When a human or an Antari touches the talisman and wills something into being, the stone draws on their energy to manifest solid creations like swords, buildings, or living phantoms. However, the stone feeds heavily on the user's energy and exerts a powerful psychological pull.

Lila uses the stone to successfully summon a black-bladed sword and an illusory duplicate of Kell before the phantom gains independent awareness.

Talisman Mechanics

Relics from Black London are pure, unbalanced potential and magic that cannot be destroyed by conventional means and must be returned. The recovered talisman is made of pure potential without humanity or harmony, meaning it cannot be broken or shattered because every shard would remain a deadly weapon.

Kell determines that the stone cannot stay in Grey London and decides he must return it to Black London where it originated. Powerful magic can render individuals invisible and intangible like ghosts, but talismans from Black London act as a toxic poison that gradually corrupts the user's veins and creates a dangerous psychological addiction.

Kell uses a concealing spell that places them outside the normal world, allowing them to pass through solid objects like ghosts. However, holding the Black London stone causes dark power to pulse through his veins, numbing his mind and making him crave the raw power despite the lethal danger.

While hiding in Fletcher's shop, Kell's veins turn completely black from the stone's influence, and he only drops it after Lila throws a knife past his head to snap him out of his trance.

6. The Climax in White London

Kell and Lila breach the White London fortress to defeat the Dane twins and confront the parasitic entity possessing the black stone.

To defeat the tyrannical rulers of White London, you must split up to breach the fortress and survive the magical defenses and mind-controlled guards. Kell enters through the main northern doors using the Black London talisman. Lila enters through the southern doors wearing a horned mask. They both face mindless, magical guards who are forced to follow orders strictly without taking initiative.

Lila encounters a young guard named Beloc who begs her to kill him because his magical binding seal compels him to guard the door no longer than he lives.

Defeating Athos and Astrid

King Athos Dane is destroyed by his own summoned magical creation when it turns against him after being provoked. During a fierce duel using elemental magic and the black stone, Kell goads King Athos into summoning a massive silver serpent of black magic instead of fighting personally. The serpent refuses Athos's commands and kills him.

Athos summons a massive silver serpent with black eyes that turns on him when commanded, crushing his neck before Kell destroys it with the metal blade.

Recognizing Astrid in Lila's form, Kell uses the stone-bound magic to summon a blade and impale her. He then turns her stone-turned body into shards using an Antari command to ensure she can never be revived.

Kell stabs the disguised queen, watches her body turn to white stone, and shatters the statue with the command As Steno.

Dispelling the Source

The black magic talisman manifests inside Kell's mind as an entity named Vitari that attempts to consume his heart and take over his body. Overwhelmed by the complete black stone, Kell's consciousness is dragged into a mental plane where Vitari grips his heart and claims ownership over him as a perfect vessel.

Vitari buries his hand inside Kell's mental chest and grips his beating heart, boasting that he will wear Kell's skin forever.

Kell overcomes the internal entity of magic by utilizing Lila's voice as an anchor and voicing the specific verbal command to dispel the magic. Guided by the distant sound of Lila's voice and his physical sensations in the real world, Kell forces his body to speak the Antari dispelling command.

Hearing Lila shout reminders about Rhy, Kell forces his paralyzed mouth to speak the command As Anasae, destroying the magic.

  • Focus on physical anchors such as cold ground, aching fingers, and external voices when mentally trapped.
  • Force the mouth to unlock and voice the exact verbal pact to dispel magic.

Latent magical ability in individuals must be consciously practiced and developed. Tieren identifies that Lila possesses dormant magical talent, prompting Kell to provide her with a puzzle board element to help her discover and practice it.

Kell gives Lila a small puzzle board and elements from Tieren to help her explore the magic inside her.

  • Take a small puzzle board and a handful of elements
  • Work with the elements for practice to find and shape any latent magic
