The narrative begins in Dallas where a young, peacock-dressed Texas Ranger known as Ware's Kid arrives with orders to track down Dell Spreen, a fugitive accused of ambushing and robbing a cattleman named Eph Carson near El Castillo. Teaking up with a local deputy named Bos' Johnson, the Ranger soon finds himself embroiled in a much larger manhunt targeting Sam Bass's outlaw gang. After a chaotic and bloody train robbery shootout at Mesquite, a sudden revelation exposes the deputy as none other than the wanted Dell Spreen himself. Rather than a cold-blooded killer, Spreen insists he was hunted by a false accusation rooted in old ranch disputes, prompting the Ranger to investigate the true mechanics of Carson's murder.
Returning to the desolate border country around the O-Bar ranch, the Ranger re-examines the crime scene and quickly realizes that the physical evidence makes Spreen's guilt impossible. Someone taller and heavier fired the fatal shot from the jagged rock barrier. Amidst this investigation, the Ranger encounters Simeon Rutter, the hardened ranch partner of the deceased Carson, along with Rutter's quiet, restless daughter who desperately longs to escape the harsh frontier for eastern civilization.
While tracking the trail through the rugged Hueco tanks, the pair falls victim to an Apache attack. In the chaotic aftermath of the skirmish, Rutter is mortally wounded and reveals the dark truth. It was Rutter himself who ambushed Carson out of greed, framed Spreen, and repeatedly tried to eliminate the young Ranger to protect his secret. Choosing mercy over absolute justice, the Ranger decides to secure Spreen's official exoneration in Austin while keeping the dead rancher's confession quiet, sparing Rutter's innocent daughter the burden of her father's brutal legacy.
