The narrative begins in a semitropical forest clearing where three American adventurers—Ace Faulkner, Red Larrabee, and Jonas Peters—serve with General Juan Banzilla's rebel army. Banzilla is on the verge of overthrowing the Federal government of a small Latin republic, but his progress is abruptly halted when enemy General Toreda acquires a faster De Haviland airplane. This new aircraft begins devastating the rebel positions with bombs, demoralizing the troops and destroying the rebels' own scout plane.
Faced with imminent defeat and mounting casualties, Ace Faulkner formulates a desperate strategy. He has his men dig a deep pit beneath a massive stone slab in the clearing where the enemy plane is expected to land. While Banzilla's army stages a calculated retreat, Ace and Red hide beneath the heavy rock as Federal forces occupy the camp for the night.
Under the cover of darkness, Ace uses a smuggled bomb to target the enemy aircraft and confronts the dictatorial President Alvarado and General Toreda in their headquarters. After a tense shootout where Ace eliminates the enemy's German pilot, he captures the remaining leaders. The following morning, the stolen De Haviland is turned against the Federal army, enabling Banzilla's forces to launch a devastating counterattack.
The story concludes with the triumphant rebel army marching into the capital city to claim victory. While Banzilla takes his place in the presidential mansion, the three pragmatic Americans reflect on their hardships and finally collect their hard-earned reward, celebrating the arrival of peace and their long-awaited pay day.
