Meanwhile, Colonel Raynor, his wife Alice, and their young daughter Marjorie are traveling across the vibrant Dakota prairie by wagon. Despite rumors of Indian unrest, they press on, enjoying the vast and exhilarating landscape. However, as they camp near the Cheyenne Reservation, a distant smoke signals an impending attack by a band of hostile Sioux led by Big Wolf.
Simultaneously, Seth, a self-reliant and observant young frontiersman from White River Farm, rides toward Beacon Crossing. Sensing danger from the shifting smoke on the horizon, Seth races to the settlement to warn the townsfolk of the Indian uprising. A rescue party, led by the sheriff and Seth, rushes to the southern spur of the Black Hills where old man Jason's homestead is burning.
During the fierce battle that follows, the white men defeat the braves, but they arrive too late to save the Jason family. In a parallel tragedy, Colonel Raynor's camp is overrun, and the colonel and his wife make the ultimate sacrifice to avoid capture, leaving behind their young daughter Marjorie.
