This cow-puncher, addressed simply as the Virginian, is an enigmatic young giant working as the trusted foreman for Judge Henry on the Sunk Creek ranch. Soon after meeting, the traveler is sent to the ranch under the Virginian's protection, surviving a runaway carriage ride through the mountains and observing the rough, humorous frontier life.
Life on the cattle range is governed by its own strict code of honor, far removed from Eastern civilization. The Virginian quickly establishes his authority, most notably when a troublemaker named Trampas insults him at a poker table. Instead of drawing a weapon immediately, the Virginian calmly delivers his famous ultimatum—when you call me that, smile—establishing his dominance without unnecessary bloodshed. He is a man of deep contradictions, equally capable of ruthless efficiency in dealing with cattle thieves and of surprising gentleness.
The arrival of Molly Stark Wood, a spirited young woman from Bennington, Vermont, who has left her conventional life to teach school on Bear Creek, introduces a romantic storyline. The Virginian falls deeply in love with her, but Molly struggles with her pride, his lack of formal polish, and his frontier background. Despite her initial hesitation and her attempts to maintain distance, she is inexorably drawn to his intelligence, dignity, and strength of character.
Meanwhile, the cattle country faces growing tension as rustlers begin operating in the region.
