Asaph Holmes is a contented bachelor living a quiet, orderly yet cluttered life in a Cape Cod village, cherishing his independence and hobbies. His solitary existence revolves around his home, his garden, and his close friendship with Lemuel Gill. However, his peaceful world is upended when he visits a neighboring town and unexpectedly falls in love with Althea Morton, a vibrant and capable woman. Despite his initial hesitation and the secret fear of disrupting his lifelong friendship with Lemuel, Asaph resolves to marry Althea and bring her home to Belleport.
The marriage brings profound changes, not least of which is Althea's ambition to open a seaside tea-room called the Green Dolphin. Asaph finds himself reluctantly drawn into the enterprise, assisting with painting and preparations while trying to maintain his privacy. When Althea is unexpectedly called away to help her sister in Abington, Asaph and Lemuel are left in charge of the newly opened tea-room.
What follows is a series of chaotic and humorous mishaps, from unexpected rushes of hungry motorists to culinary improvisations involving clam chowder instead of tea. The arrival of new visitors, particularly a perceptive young landscape architect named Peggy Davidson and a friendly doctor, injects fresh life into the quiet village. As the summer progresses, the characters navigate shifting loyalties, romance, and the comedic trials of running a village business. The narrative explores the delicate balance between cherished solitude and the warmth of shared human connection, ultimately showing how love and community can transform even the most stubborn of bachelors.
